Atomfall gets a mixed-to-average rating from critics but a more favorable response from Steam players. The split reflects different audiences and review systems—not a single verdict: critics often praise its setting, exploration and freedom, while selected reviews flag narrative, stealth, combat and progression issues.

How do Atomfall’s review scores compare?

The clearest headline is a difference in tone between critic reviews and Steam’s user reviews. These numbers come from separate platforms, samples and methods, so they should be read side by side rather than combined.

Source and platform Snapshot What it indicates
Metacritic critic reviews, PS5 filter 74/100, “Mixed or Average,” based on 56 critic reviews. The page listed 33 positive (59%), 22 mixed (39%) and one negative (2%). A qualified, middle-of-the-road critic reception for the PS5-filtered page—not a score covering every platform.
Steam, English lifetime reviews 77% positive from 3,200 reviews; “Mostly Positive.” A more favorable Steam-user snapshot, representing lifetime English-language reviews on that storefront.
Steam, English reviews from the last 30 days 80% positive from 126 reviews; “Very Positive.” A recent Steam snapshot that may move as new reviews arrive.

The figures above were retrieved on October 4, 2026. Steam review totals and percentages are live storefront figures and can change. Metacritic also showed a 6.6 user score from 324 ratings on its broader Atomfall game page, with 47% positive, 33% mixed and 20% negative. That is a separate, multi-platform user-rating pool, not a counterpart to either the PS5 critic score or Steam’s review percentages.

What do reviewers like about Atomfall?

Selected critic excerpts repeatedly point to the qualities that give Atomfall its identity: an unusual setting, a world that rewards exploration, a mystery to unravel and room to choose how to pursue objectives. GamesRadar+’s March 21, 2025 review excerpt on Metacritic praised the tightly designed world and player freedom. GameSpew, in an excerpt dated the same day, highlighted the leads system and the incentive to replay for another ending. A DualShockers excerpt also praised the immersive world and survival-oriented feel of combat. These are examples from reproduced reviews, not a count of every critic’s opinion.

Atomfall - PlayStation 5
  • Player Driven Mystery: Unravel a tapestry of interwoven narratives through exploration, conversation, investigation, and combat, where every choice you make has consequences.
  • Explore this Green and Unpleasant Land: The picturesque British countryside, with rolling green hills, lush valleys, and rural villages belie the dangers that await you.
  • Search, Scavage, Survive: You’ll need to scavenge for supplies, craft weapons and items, and fight desperately to make it our alive!
  • “Basic Supply Bundle” - Supplies are scarce in the quarantine zone. Improve your chances for survival with additional items to find, including an exclusive melee weapon to help you in those brutal close-quarters engagements. o Exclusive Melee Weapon Variant o Additional Loot Caches o Item Recipe

The premise helps explain that appeal. Atomfall is a single-player survival-action game developed and published by Rebellion, released on March 27, 2025. It places the player in a fictional quarantine zone in Northern England, five years after the Windscale nuclear disaster. Exploration, scavenging, crafting, barter, combat and conversation all feed into progress through the zone. The Steam listing and PlayStation listing describe the setting and game.

That combination makes discovery and decision-making central to the experience. Players drawn to piecing together a place’s secrets and finding their own route through objectives may find more to enjoy than someone looking primarily for a tightly directed action story.

What are the main reservations in the reviews?

The praise for atmosphere and freedom does not mean critics agreed that every part of the game works equally well. In a review excerpt dated April 2, 2025, Game Informer called out the skill system, stealth and narrative as significant weaknesses. A PlaySense excerpt reproduced on Metacritic described cumbersome combat and stealth that could feel inconsistent. Other selected criticism also raises concerns about enemy AI and the payoff of the central story.

These points matter because they touch several different expectations. A player can enjoy investigating the setting and still find the story less compelling than its mystery suggests, or feel that stealth and combat do not support the freedom the world promises. The skill-system criticism is a separate caution for anyone who wants progression choices to feel especially satisfying. The excerpts establish recurring topics in selected reviews, but not how often each issue appears across all reviews.

Is Atomfall worth playing?

Atomfall is most likely to appeal if you want a single-player adventure built around an unusual setting, exploration, environmental mystery and flexible approaches to objectives. The more favorable Steam snapshot suggests many storefront reviewers respond well to it, while the PS5 critic aggregate and selected negative excerpts point to a less consistent experience in narrative, stealth and progression.

If those weaker areas are deal-breakers—or you expect polished stealth, consistently compelling storytelling or especially refined combat—the review picture gives you reason to be cautious. If atmosphere and discovering your own path matter more, the strengths highlighted by critics and players may outweigh those reservations. PlayStation lists both PS4 and PS5 versions; edition availability can vary by retailer. An official Atomfall community announcement described a boxed physical edition.
