Atomfall is a single-player survival-action game from Rebellion, set in a fictional British quarantine zone five years after the 1957 Windscale disaster. Its first gameplay trailer, shown during the Xbox Summer Showcase and explained by Rebellion on June 10, 2024, introduced a mystery explored through clues, conversations, scavenging, barter and combat—not a straightforward sequence of conventional quests.
What is Atomfall?
Atomfall is a survival-action game developed by Rebellion. The studio describes it as a post-war British setting shaped by British science fiction, Cold War paranoia and folk horror. Its story is a fictionalized take on the aftermath of the 1957 Windscale nuclear disaster; the game’s later official gameplay explanation places the action in 1962, five years after the emergency. The real disaster is historical, while the game’s quarantine-zone story and characters are fictional. Rebellion’s June 10, 2024 trailer breakdown and its August 21, 2024 gameplay deep dive provide the studio’s descriptions.

What does the first gameplay trailer show?
The trailer introduces Wyndham, a village in England’s Lake District, as an unsettling blend of rural beauty and visible catastrophe. Picturesque countryside gives way to abandoned cars, a fallen helicopter and an empty playground. Military control, strange creatures and eccentric characters suggest that the quarantine zone contains more than the aftermath of a disaster.
Rebellion’s trailer breakdown says players will encounter factions, cults and individuals whose relationships can affect the story and the fate of the zone. The video establishes the setting and tone rather than resolving the mystery: its central invitation is to explore and work out what happened.

How does investigation work?
Rebellion describes Atomfall as an investigation and discovery experience. Instead of relying on a single fixed route through conventional quest instructions, players find clues and talk with people to uncover Leads. Some open optional paths, and players decide which ones to follow. Characters can offer conflicting explanations, so the game’s mystery is not presented as having one clearly stated account from the outset. The official gameplay deep dive explains this player-directed approach.
In an August 21, 2024 hands-on preview, Xbox Wire editor-in-chief Joe Skrebels summarized the structure as: “In Rebellion’s take on the genre, you don’t get quests – you get leads.” That is an observation from his preview of an early build, not a guarantee that every detail remained unchanged in the final release. What survival and combat systems are in the trailer?
Supplies are scarce, so exploration is tied to staying alive. The reveal breakdown describes hunting and scavenging for food, crafting materials, weapons and ammunition, with each bullet treated as valuable. A metal detector can help locate resources and secrets. Rebellion’s reveal breakdown introduces these survival elements.
The later gameplay explanation adds traders who barter rather than use money, alongside melee and ranged combat. Players can choose whether to confront danger or retreat. In his early-build preview, Skrebels also noted scarce ammunition, gathering materials for bandages and throwable items, and the importance of melee equipment; those details should be read as preview observations rather than confirmed descriptions of every final-game encounter. The official deep dive describes barter and combat.
