Atomic Heart 2 is an announced sequel that returns to Mundfish’s alternate-history retrofuturistic universe and promises a story that expands to a global scale. Its dystopian feel comes from the setting and announcement-trailer imagery; Mundfish has not confirmed detailed plot events or specific locations. The studio describes a living world, expanded RPG systems, returning and new characters, and combat combining glove abilities with melee and ranged weapons.

What is Atomic Heart 2?

Mundfish announced Atomic Heart 2 on June 7, 2025, describing it as an action-adventure role-playing game in an alternate-history retrofuturistic world. The announcement introduced three projects: Atomic Heart 2, The CUBE, and ILL. Mundfish says the sequel continues the story, brings back some characters alongside new ones, and expands events to a global scale. Mundfish’s announcement calls it a return to a retrofuturistic universe “full of new dangers.”

The official game page adds that the sequel will emphasize story, role-playing elements, player freedom, and activities in a living world. These are the developer’s announced plans, not details established through hands-on play. Mundfish’s Atomic Heart 2 page is the clearest current summary of what the studio has disclosed.

Why does Atomic Heart 2 look so dystopian?

Mundfish itself describes the setting as dystopian and retrofuturistic. The first game established an alternate reality in 1955, where a technologically advanced society’s system failure unleashes a nightmare. That contrast—promises of progress set against technology out of control—provides the franchise’s dystopian foundation. The original game’s official page gives that background.

The sequel announcement suggests a broader canvas, not a confirmed new political order or a specific catastrophe: Mundfish says events will expand to a global scale. The announcement trailer also contributes to the darker impression, but images alone do not establish plot, locations, or how the sequel’s world works. The Atomic Heart 2 announcement trailer was published June 6, 2025.

What gameplay changes has Mundfish announced?

The clearest described change is an expanded RPG system. Mundfish also says combat will let players use glove abilities alongside melee and ranged weapons simultaneously. The studio has not published enough detail in the cited materials to establish how those systems work in practice, how large the world is, or how the sequel compares in performance or quality with the first game.

Is Atomic Heart 2 a sequel, and should you play the first game?

The original is useful context for the alternate-history setting and the technological disaster at the heart of the series. However, Mundfish has not said that playing the first game is required preparation, and it has not explained the sequel’s opening or how much prior knowledge it will assume.
