au.dll may appear in messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because au.dll was not found.”
- “The file au.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: au.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading au.dll. The specified module could not be found.”

au.dll is not a Windows system file. It is identified as the Adobe Audition Language Module, associated with the Adobe Audition German Language Module.
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the exact Adobe Audition installation that displays the error. Do not download au.dll from a random DLL archive or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. The file belongs with the older Adobe Audition program that requested it, and the correct copy must match that program’s release, language component, and architecture.

If the error started after antivirus software removed the file, inspect quarantine first. If Audition starts but has unrelated startup problems, reset its preferences. Use SFC and DISM only when Windows itself appears damaged.
What causes an au.dll error
The filename identifies an application component, not a general Windows dependency. Common causes include:

A mismatched language module
A file from another Audition release or language installation may not work with the requesting executable. -
A wrong architecture or version
au.dllis associated with a legacy 32-bit Audition component in public file records. A replacement must match the old application rather than the bitness of Windows alone. -
A missing dependency of au.dll
“The specified module could not be found” can mean thatau.dllexists but another library it needs does not. -
Windows component corruption
This is less likely becauseau.dllis not a Windows component, but broader system damage can affect application startup.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Malware or tampering
The filename alone does not prove malware. Treat an unexpected copy, altered file, or suspicious location as a security concern.
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting au.dll
Before changing files, confirm which executable is producing the error.
- Right-click the shortcut that shows the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and its folder.
- If the shortcut points to a backup, temporary folder, removable drive, or manually copied directory, stop using that shortcut.
If the error appears immediately after launching Adobe Audition, continue with the Adobe repair steps below. If another program requests au.dll, do not install an Adobe file into that program’s folder. Repair the application named by the shortcut instead.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
A security product may have removed the file, but restoring it is safe only when its origin is trusted.

Windows Security steps
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
au.dllor the Adobe Audition installation. - Expand the event and review the detected path and action.
- If the file came from the original Adobe installer or a trusted backup, use Restore only after confirming the detection is a false positive.
- Start Audition again.
Do not create a permanent exclusion simply to suppress the message. If Windows Security identifies the file as suspicious, run a full scan and obtain a clean Adobe installer instead.
If another antivirus program is installed, open its quarantine or history area and perform the same check. Record the original file path before restoring anything.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if Adobe Audition opens without the au.dll message and the file is restored inside the application’s own installation directory. If the same message returns, the file may be damaged, the wrong version may have been restored, or another dependency may be missing. Reinstall Audition rather than repeatedly restoring the same copy.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall Adobe Audition
This is the most likely fix because au.dll belongs to a specific Adobe Audition language component.
For a Creative Cloud installation
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- Select Apps.
- Find Adobe Audition.
- Open the application’s More actions menu.
- Choose Uninstall or the available repair-related option.
- Keep or remove preferences according to whether you need to preserve the current setup.
- Restart Windows after the removal completes.
- Reopen Creative Cloud.
- Install the same Audition release that your project files and plug-ins require.
- Launch Audition from the newly installed shortcut.
The available menu can differ between Creative Cloud releases. If no repair command is shown, uninstalling and reinstalling is the more reliable route.
For an older perpetual Audition installation
Use the original Adobe installer, original installation media, or an authenticated Adobe account source for the registered product. Availability varies by product and release.
- Close Adobe applications.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Adobe Audition.
- If the affected version is listed, select its menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the matching original installer.
- Install the same language component that the old program expects.
- Use the original product credentials or activation method when requested.
- Start Audition from its installed shortcut.
Removing the failed installation before reinstalling matters. An installer may not overwrite every damaged file when an old copy remains in place.
Important architecture warning
Do not choose a replacement based only on whether your computer runs 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit legacy Audition application needs its matching 32-bit application files. Windows 11 and Windows 10 can run many older 32-bit programs, but that does not make a 64-bit DLL interchangeable with a 32-bit one.

A successful reinstall should:
- Start Audition without the missing-file message.
- Place the required file in the Audition installation or language-module directory.
- Preserve the application’s expected language and plug-in structure.
- Avoid requiring a copy in

If reinstalling does not help, verify the shortcut target again. You may be starting an old executable from a different folder.

Why copying au.dll into System32 is unsafe
C:WindowsSystem32 is not a universal destination for every DLL. On 64-bit Windows, it normally contains system components used by 64-bit programs, while C:WindowsSysWOW64 supports many 32-bit system components. Neither folder is automatically the correct location for an Adobe application DLL.
Application DLL loading depends on the requesting executable, its application directory, configured search paths, and dependencies. Copying au.dll globally can:
- Make the wrong program load an incompatible file.
- Create search-order conflicts.
- Hide the real damaged installation.
- Expose Windows to an untrusted binary.
- Leave the application unable to find a second missing dependency.
The correct location is normally the relevant Adobe Audition program or language-module directory. The exact path depends on the Audition edition and installation method.
Why random DLL downloads are a bad fix
Avoid websites that offer individual copies of au.dll. A downloaded file may contain malware, have altered contents, belong to another Audition release, use the wrong architecture, or omit dependencies required by the application.
It can also make the error appear to change without fixing the installation. For example, the first missing file may be replaced, only for Audition to report a second missing component.
Use the Adobe installer, an authenticated Adobe account source, original installation media, or a verified backup of the complete application. Do not use a standalone DLL download as a substitute for repairing the program.
Fix 4: Reset Audition preferences
If Audition opens but behaves abnormally, crashes during startup, or shows unrelated configuration problems, reset its preferences. This does not replace a missing au.dll, but it can correct damaged user settings.

- While holding the key, start Adobe Audition.
- Continue holding it during startup until the application resets or prompts about preferences.
- Test the program with a new or existing project.
If the original au.dll error appears before Audition can start, preference reset is not the primary fix. Repair the installation first.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when other Windows programs also fail, Windows reports corrupted system files, or the problem began after a system update or storage issue. They do not normally restore a third-party Adobe DLL.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.

- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files were not detected as damaged.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test Audition.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the result persists, investigate Windows servicing or storage problems.
SFC repairs protected Windows components. It is not a reliable source for au.dll, which belongs to Adobe Audition.

Fix 6: Update Windows only when the evidence points there
Pending Windows updates can correct operating-system compatibility and servicing problems, but updating Windows will not normally install an Adobe language-module DLL.
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Test Adobe Audition.
If only Audition reports the error and other applications work normally, prioritize reinstalling Audition rather than treating Windows Update as the main repair.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Check drivers only for an audio-device problem
A sound-card or interface driver can cause audio-device failures, dropouts, or crashes. There is no established reason for a driver update to install au.dll, so do not treat a driver update as the normal solution to this missing-file message.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Audition starts but cannot use an audio device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Open Audition and review its audio hardware settings.
For a manufacturer driver, download it only from the computer, motherboard, sound-card, or audio-interface manufacturer. Do not use a driver package from an unknown download page.
Manually checking hardware vendors and matching driver revisions can take time, especially when several audio devices are installed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the installation needed, while the driver installation requires the full version; a driver update is not a replacement for reinstalling Adobe Audition.
Fix 8: Install runtimes only when the error identifies one
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET merely because au.dll is missing. Those packages are appropriate when:
- The error names a specific runtime.
- The Adobe installer identifies the runtime as a prerequisite.
- Several applications report a matching runtime error.
Installing unrelated runtime packages can add unnecessary variables without restoring the Adobe file.

Should you run regsvr32 on au.dll?
Usually, no.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 command registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. These are typically COM or ActiveX components. A normal application-support DLL does not necessarily provide those entry points.
Running:
regsvr32 au.dll
is therefore unlikely to repair a missing or damaged Adobe Audition language module. It may produce another error, including a missing entry-point message. Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that particular DLL.
When the error says “specified module could not be found”
This wording does not always mean that au.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found au.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies.

Follow this order:
- Confirm that
au.dllis in the correct Audition installation directory. - Confirm that the file came from the matching Adobe installer.
- Reinstall the complete Audition version instead of copying only the DLL.
- Check antivirus quarantine for additional removed files.
- Check whether the shortcut points to an old or partially restored folder.
- Record the full error and the requesting executable path.
Do not download a series of DLLs to satisfy each new message. That approach can introduce incompatible files and hide the underlying installation problem.
Last-resort checks
Test a clean user profile
A damaged Windows user profile can affect preferences and application configuration. Create a temporary local Windows account, sign in, and launch Audition from its installed shortcut. If it works there, the installation may be healthy and the original profile may need repair.
This does not prove that au.dll was a profile problem. It is a diagnostic comparison.
Use System Restore cautiously
System Restore is reasonable only when:
- The failure began after a known software or system change.
- A restore point exists from before the failure.
- You understand which applications and drivers may be rolled back.
It should not be the first fix for an Adobe application file. Reinstalling the matching Audition version is more targeted.
Gather information for support
If every legitimate reinstall fails, record:
- The complete error text.
- The requesting executable and shortcut target.
- The installed Audition edition and language.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether
au.dllexists beside the executable. - Any antivirus quarantine event.
- The result of DISM and SFC.
- The installer or application log, if available.
This information helps distinguish a missing file from a missing dependency, wrong architecture, permissions issue, or damaged installation.

Is au.dll part of Windows?
No. It is identified as the Adobe Audition Language Module and is associated with the Adobe Audition German Language Module. It should not normally be placed in a Windows system directory.
Does current Adobe Audition use au.dll?
Do not assume that it does. Current Audition installations contain differently named components, and the presence of those newer files does not establish that they use this older language-module DLL. A current Creative Cloud installation may not need the legacy file at all.
Where should au.dll be located?
Normally, it belongs in the relevant Adobe Audition program or language-module directory. The exact path depends on the edition and installation method. It is not universally System32 or SysWOW64.
Can SFC restore au.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components. Because au.dll is an Adobe application file, repair or reinstall the matching Audition installation instead.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I register au.dll with regsvr32?
Generally no. A missing application-support DLL is not automatically a COM or ActiveX server. Registration is unlikely to solve this error unless Adobe specifically requires it.
Will a sound-card driver update fix au.dll?
Not normally. Drivers may fix audio-device problems after Audition starts, but there is no evidence that a driver installs this Adobe language-module file.
Is au.dll malware?
The filename alone does not establish that. Check its location, provenance, digital signature where available, and antivirus history. A copy from an unknown DLL archive should not be trusted merely because its name matches.
What is the safest permanent fix?
Identify the requesting executable, then repair or reinstall the exact Adobe Audition edition and language component from an original or authenticated Adobe source. This restores the complete application instead of masking one missing file.
