Common messages include “The program can’t start because audiocontrol.dll is missing from your computer,” “audiocontrol.dll was not found,” and “Cannot find audiocontrol.dll.” When audiocontrol.dll cannot be loaded, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the AVerMedia application that originally installed it.
The 60-second answer
audiocontrol.dll is an application DLL associated with AVerMedia software, especially AVerMedia RECentral and some older capture-card utilities. It is not a Windows system file and should not normally be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Start here:
- Close the AVerMedia program.
- Check Windows Security’s quarantine history.
- Identify your capture-card model and the AVerMedia application that fails.
- Download the matching installer from AVerMedia’s official Support and Download page.
- Repair or uninstall the old application, restart Windows, and install the correct package.
- Restart again and test the application.
The exact package cannot be selected from the DLL name alone. The capture-device model, Windows version, application version, and application architecture all matter.
What causes the audiocontrol.dll error
The Windows loader shows this error when the affected application cannot find the DLL, cannot load it, or finds a damaged or incompatible copy. That does not automatically mean Windows itself is corrupted.

The most common causes are:
- An incomplete AVerMedia installation or update
- Antivirus quarantine
- Manual deletion or disk cleanup
- Removal of an older capture-card utility
- A damaged installation folder
- A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
- A missing Microsoft Visual C++ dependency
- A recent driver, Windows, or system change
- Malware or storage problems causing the file to disappear again
Historical installation inventories place the file inside an AVerMedia RECentral folder under C:Program Files (x86)AVerMediaAVerMedia RECentral. Your installation may use a different folder or product release. Older AVerMedia capture-card software, including MediaCenter, may also use an AudioControl.dll file.
Fix 1: Reinstall the correct AVerMedia application
This is the most likely solution when only RECentral or another AVerMedia utility refuses to start.
Identify the affected application
- Read the title bar or wording of the error dialog.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Processes or Details.
- Look for RECentral, an AVerMedia utility, or the executable named in the error.
- Write down the capture-card model from the device label, its box, or the application shortcut.
Do not choose an installer solely because it contains a similar DLL name. AVerMedia’s download area includes packages for different devices, Windows versions, and application releases.
Repair or remove the existing installation
- Press
Windows+I. - Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for AVerMedia, RECentral, or the affected capture-card software.
- Select the three-dot menu, then choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what is available.
- If you have profiles or recordings, back them up before uninstalling.
- Restart Windows.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the affected AVerMedia application. Obtain the correct installer before removing it if possible.
Install from AVerMedia
- Open AVerMedia’s official Support and Download page.
- Search for the exact capture-card model.
- Select your Windows version and the appropriate application or driver package.
- Download the installer supplied for that device.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the AVerMedia application and test the capture device.
The repair worked if the program opens without the DLL message and can detect its capture hardware. If the same message returns immediately, continue with the quarantine and dependency checks below rather than copying a loose DLL into a Windows folder.
Fix 2: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Defender or another security product may have removed the file from an otherwise valid installation.

- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the AVerMedia installation folder or
audiocontrol.dll. - Expand a detection to inspect its path, name, and action.
- If the file came from the genuine AVerMedia installer and you are confident it is a false positive, use the available Restore action.
- Reopen the application.
Restoring a quarantined file may cause Defender to detect it again. If that happens, do not repeatedly restore it without checking the installer and detection details. Reinstall the application from AVerMedia instead, then run a security scan.
If the file keeps disappearing, run Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan. Repeated removal can indicate a security problem, a damaged disk, or an installer that does not match the application.
Fix 3: Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ dependency
audiocontrol.dll is not itself a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file. However, the AVerMedia program may depend on a runtime that is missing or damaged.
A 32-bit AVerMedia application generally needs the x86 runtime, even when Windows is 64-bit. A 64-bit application needs the x64 runtime. Older applications may also require older Visual C++ releases installed side by side.
- Open Microsoft’s Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
- Download the x86 package for an older or 32-bit AVerMedia application.
- Download the x64 package when the application is 64-bit or when the vendor package requires it.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed, or Install if it is absent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test RECentral or the affected utility.
If the error remains, reinstall the AVerMedia application after repairing the runtime. Do not uninstall every existing Visual C++ package indiscriminately because other programs may depend on specific versions.
Fix 4: Install pending Windows and AVerMedia driver updates
A recent Windows or capture-device driver change can leave the application and driver packages out of sync.

Install Windows updates
- Press
Windows+I. - Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, including when Windows does not immediately request a restart.
- Test the AVerMedia program.
Check the capture device in Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers if the capture device is connected by USB.
- Find the AVerMedia device.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message under General.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- If the device has a warning icon, select Update driver, then Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, use the exact AVerMedia driver package for your model rather than a generic driver. Disconnect the capture device only when the installer’s instructions require it.
If hunting through model pages and comparing driver packages is the part slowing you down, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it found, while driver installation through the full version is optional. For this file, the exact AVerMedia application and device package remains the definitive fix.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other programs also fail
Use this step when several unrelated applications report missing or corrupted DLLs, Windows behaves abnormally, or system files were damaged after an update or storage problem. It is not a guaranteed repair for a third-party AVerMedia DLL.
First install pending updates, then run DISM before SFC.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the AVerMedia application.
If DISM reports that it cannot complete, restart Windows, install pending updates, and run the command again. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If both commands complete without changing the AVerMedia error, reinstall the AVerMedia application because these commands do not replace vendor DLLs.
If manually repeating DISM and SFC makes it difficult to see what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing detected system issues; repairs through the full version are optional. Reinstalling the AVerMedia program remains the definitive fix when its own DLL is missing.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after a driver, application, or Windows change, System Restore may reverse that change without removing personal files.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can remove recently installed programs, drivers, and system changes. It does not guarantee recovery of a missing third-party DLL. After restoration, install the correct AVerMedia package if the error remains.

Why you should not download audiocontrol.dll separately
Do not download a loose copy from a random DLL website. It may contain malware, belong to the wrong AVerMedia release, use the wrong architecture, or require dependencies that are still missing. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an unrelated application folder can also create version conflicts.
The safe source is the official AVerMedia installer for your capture-card model. Let that installer place the file in the application directory. Microsoft’s official Visual C++ packages are the appropriate source for runtime dependencies, not DLL-index downloads.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is used for self-registering DLL and ActiveX components that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. An application library such as audiocontrol.dll normally loads through RECentral or another AVerMedia program and does not need manual registration.
Running commands such as these is therefore not a general repair:

A registration error does not prove the file is missing. It usually means the DLL is not designed for manual registration, is the wrong architecture, or has a missing dependency.
If the error still appears
Check the following before escalating:
- Confirm the exact executable that displays the error.
- Check whether only one AVerMedia program fails.
- Confirm that the installed package matches the capture-device model.
- Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit before selecting runtimes.
- Review Windows Security Protection history again.
- Inspect Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for an application error.
- Test with a new Windows user profile.
- Run a full security scan if the file repeatedly disappears.
- Check disk health if files become corrupted or vanish repeatedly.
When contacting AVerMedia, provide the device model, Windows version and build, application version, full error text, and any relevant crash details.

FAQ
Is audiocontrol.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an AVerMedia application DLL and should normally remain in the folder belonging to the AVerMedia program that installed it.
Which program uses audiocontrol.dll?
AVerMedia RECentral has a confirmed association. Older AVerMedia capture-card software may also use an AudioControl.dll file. The filename alone does not prove which product is installed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Reinstall the owning AVerMedia application and let its installer place the file correctly.
Will installing Visual C++ always fix it?
No. It helps only when a missing or damaged runtime dependency prevents the AVerMedia program from loading. A missing vendor DLL usually requires an application repair or reinstall.
What if only RECentral fails?
Repair or reinstall RECentral first, using the package for the exact capture-card model. System-wide Windows repairs are less likely to help when every other application works.
What if many programs show DLL errors?
Run Windows Update, then DISM and SFC, and investigate malware or storage problems. A pattern across unrelated applications suggests a broader Windows or hardware issue rather than one damaged AVerMedia installation.
