lxaa1_serv.dll is associated with Lexmark printer and scanner software, not with Windows itself. If it is missing or cannot load, repair or reinstall the exact Lexmark package for your device instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
Public file metadata associates lxaa1_serv.dll with Lexmark Communication System, a component of older Lexmark printer or multifunction-device software. The file is reported as a 32-bit component with version 1.0.0.0, but those details come from third-party file records rather than a current Lexmark file manifest.
The filename alone cannot identify the exact printer model or installer that placed it on your computer. An older indexed record shows the file inside a Windows DriverStore package containing wialx007.inf, but that is not a universal location. Do not assume that copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is the correct repair.
Windows may report errors such as:
- “The program can’t start because lxaa1_serv.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting lxaa1_serv.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because lxaa1_serv.dll was not found.”
- “lxaa1_serv.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file is absent. It can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing, incompatible, or blocked.

Diagnose the error before changing Windows
First note when the message appears:
- During printing
- During scanning
- While installing or setting up a Lexmark device
- At Windows startup
- When opening a Lexmark utility
- When launching an unrelated application
Then collect these details:
- The exact printer or multifunction model.
- Your Windows version and build.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The complete error text.
- The application name shown in the error.
- The file path, if Windows displays one.
To check Windows architecture, press Win + I, select System > About, and read System type. A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit Lexmark utility, but that utility must receive the compatible 32-bit components from its own installer. Replacing a 32-bit DLL with an arbitrary 64-bit copy will not solve the problem.

Fix 1: Repair the installed Lexmark application
If the error started recently and Lexmark software still appears in Windows, try its built-in repair option first.
On Windows 11 or Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the Lexmark printer utility, scan application, or driver package.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Try printing or scanning again.
The repair option is not available for every driver package. If the error remains, return to the same screen and choose Uninstall. Restart Windows after removal.
On older Windows versions, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the Lexmark software, and choose Repair or Uninstall.

If repair works, the Lexmark utility should open without the DLL message and the affected printer or scanner function should return. If printing works but scanning does not, the installed package may contain only the print driver. Continue with a complete Lexmark package installation.
Fix 2: Reinstall the exact Lexmark package
This is the most reliable fix for a genuinely missing or damaged lxaa1_serv.dll.

- Open Lexmark’s official Drivers & Downloads page.
- Search for the exact model, not just “Lexmark printer.”
- Select your installed Windows version.
- Select the correct architecture when the download page offers that choice.
- Download the current model-specific package.
- If you need scanning, choose the full print-and-scan package rather than a basic print-only driver.
- Disconnect and reconnect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Run the installer.
- Restart Windows when installation completes.
- Print a test page and open the Lexmark scanning utility if scanning is required.
Lexmark also provides a Universal Print Driver for supported models. Use it only when your device and required functions are covered. A universal print driver may not provide the scanning or device-specific features supplied by a full model package.
If the current package does not support your older device or version of Windows, do not force a random legacy DLL into the system. Check Lexmark’s compatibility information, use a Windows-supported printer driver where appropriate, or contact Lexmark for the correct legacy package.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged, altered, or incorrectly detected driver component.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries created around the time the error began.
- Expand any entry that refers to Lexmark software or
lxaa1_serv.dll.
Do not restore the file merely because its filename is familiar. Restore it only if all of the following are true:
- It came from an official Lexmark installer.
- The installer and file have a valid digital signature where one is available.
- A current security scan shows no related threat.
- Reinstalling the official package does not provide a clean copy.
The safer approach is usually to remove the damaged installation and download a fresh package from Lexmark. If Windows Security repeatedly quarantines the file, do not create an exclusion before verifying its origin and signature.
Fix 4: Remove an orphaned startup component
If the error appears at every boot but printing works normally, an old Lexmark utility may still be trying to load a component that was removed during an upgrade or partial uninstall.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall Lexmark utilities you no longer use.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the message returns.
If the startup message remains, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Startup apps, and look for an obsolete Lexmark entry. Disable it only if you recognize it as belonging to the removed Lexmark software. Do not disable unrelated Windows entries based only on an unfamiliar name.
A clean uninstall is preferable to copying lxaa1_serv.dll back into a folder. The orphaned program may require additional files or services, so restoring one DLL would leave the underlying problem in place.
Fix 5: Check Device Manager and reinstall the device
Device Manager can reveal whether Windows is using an incomplete or incompatible printer package.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Lexmark device or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and driver date.
- If the Lexmark device is clearly stale or corrupted, select Uninstall Device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct package downloaded from Lexmark.
Do not select an option to remove every printer driver from the computer unless you understand which other printers will be affected. If only the Lexmark device is failing, remove only its associated device and software.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other problems exist
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Lexmark DLL, so use them when you also see broken Windows features, failed updates, crashes, or multiple unrelated application errors.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Lexmark software again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, repeat the Lexmark package repair rather than assuming lxaa1_serv.dll itself is a Windows file.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a driver change
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver update, or software installation, System Restore may reverse the change when a suitable restore point exists.
- Press
Win + R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace a current Lexmark package permanently. Afterward, install the correct driver if Windows rolls back the printer software.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL fix
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for repairing printer drivers.
Running this:
regsvr32 lxaa1_serv.dll
may produce an entry-point error, architecture error, or another message without repairing printing. Use regsvr32 only when the official vendor installer or documentation specifically instructs you to register that particular DLL. Otherwise, let the Lexmark installer place and configure its components.
Avoid standalone DLL downloads
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the rest of the Lexmark package. Even a genuine-looking copy may fail because the missing item is a dependency rather than lxaa1_serv.dll.
Do not copy an unverified DLL into System32, SysWOW64, a DriverStore folder, or an application directory. The official Lexmark driver installer is the safe source because it can install the matching files, services, configuration, and device components together.

Public metadata reports a 32-bit file. That does not mean it belongs in SysWOW64, and it does not justify downloading another copy. The application and complete driver package determine the correct location.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not. There is no evidence that those runtimes are the normal first-line fix for this Lexmark component. Install one only when the complete error specifically identifies it as missing.
What if reinstalling Lexmark does not work?
Record the printer model, Windows build, full error text, application name, package version, and path shown by Windows. The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing, or the legacy package may be incompatible with the current system.
Can the file be malicious?
A filename alone cannot prove authenticity. Scan the system, check Windows Security Protection History, and verify the file’s origin and digital signature where available. Prefer a fresh file installed by Lexmark’s official package.
