audioeng.dll Won’t Load: Diagnose and Repair Windows Audio

Length9 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this quick diagnosis

Before changing files, note:

  • Which program fails: one game or application, or several programs
  • When the error appears: at startup, during playback, after an update, or after a crash
  • Whether Windows audio works: test speakers, headphones, Bluetooth audio, and the microphone
  • Your Windows architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type
  • What changed recently: Windows Update, an audio-driver update, antivirus quarantine, cleanup software, or malware removal

audioeng.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows audio component. It is the Windows Audio Engine loaded by audiodg.exe, where it mixes and processes audio streams and loads audio-processing objects. It is not normally a file that belongs to a particular game, Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, or .NET installation.

The safest repair is therefore to restore Windows components through Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

What the audioeng.dll errors mean

You may see messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because audioeng.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because audioeng.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading audioeng.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “audioeng.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These messages do not prove that audioeng.dll itself is the only damaged item. The “specified module could not be found” wording can also indicate that a dependency needed by the audio engine failed to load.

If one game reports the error but Windows audio and other applications work, that game may be damaged or may be exposing a driver or audio-enhancement problem. If multiple programs fail, treat the issue as a Windows component or driver problem first.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

Windows updates can replace damaged system files and service audio components.

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install every available update.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Test the affected application and play audio through the device that previously failed.

On Windows 10, Windows Update is under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

If the error began immediately after an update, continue to the driver and recovery steps below. Do not remove or replace audioeng.dll manually.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the main repair for a missing, corrupted, or mismatched audioeng.dll. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected program and general audio.

A successful SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If the error remains, restart once more and test both the application and another audio source.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must closely match the installed Windows edition and build. Do not point DISM at a random ISO or an unrelated computer.

Running these commands manually is free but gives limited guidance about which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system-file problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not required when DISM and SFC resolve the issue.

Fix 3: Check whether the program itself needs repair

If only one game or application fails, repair that installation before making broader changes.

For a Microsoft Store application

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected application.
  4. Select the three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Advanced options.
  6. Click Repair.
  7. Test the application.

If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and use Reset where available. Resetting can remove the application’s local settings or cached data.

For a traditional desktop program

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select the program.
  3. Choose Modify, Change, or Repair if the installer provides one.
  4. Complete the repair wizard.
  5. Restart Windows and test again.

For a game, open its launcher and use Verify files, Scan and repair, or the equivalent option. This replaces damaged game files without asking you to copy audioeng.dll into the game folder. If verification fails, uninstall the game, restart, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer or launcher.

Reinstalling the application is useful when its own files or configuration are damaged, but it does not replace the Windows audio-engine repair steps if several programs are affected.

Fix 4: Update, roll back, or reinstall the audio driver

A faulty audio driver, enhancement, codec, virtual-audio device, headset utility, or recording program can cause audioeng.dll to fail while the Windows copy remains intact. This is especially likely when the problem began after a driver or Windows update, or when only speakers, Bluetooth, HDMI, or a microphone is affected.

Try Windows Update for the driver

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Settings or Device Manager, depending on your Windows version.
  3. In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the affected audio device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows and test audio.

You can also check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates for driver updates.

Roll back a recently updated driver

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click the audio device and select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
  6. Choose a reason and confirm.
  7. Restart Windows.

Reinstall the audio driver

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click the affected device.
  4. Select Uninstall device.
  5. If shown, select the option to remove the driver package only when you have a replacement driver available.
  6. Confirm the uninstall.
  7. Restart Windows.

Windows will normally reinstall a usable driver after restart. If it does not, install the driver supplied by your computer, motherboard, headset, or audio-device manufacturer. Use the exact model and Windows version rather than a similarly named driver.

Finding the correct driver manually can involve comparing hardware models and checking many versions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify available updates; installation through the full version is optional, and the manufacturer’s driver remains the preferred source when available.

After updating or reinstalling, disable recently added audio enhancements, virtual microphones, equalizers, and headset control panels temporarily. audioeng.dll loads audio-processing objects, so one of these components can be responsible even when Windows system files pass SFC.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware

Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious file. Do not disable antivirus protection simply to restore audioeng.dll.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review entries involving audioeng.dll or Windows audio.
  5. Confirm the file path and detection details.
  6. Restore the file only if the detection has been verified as a false positive and the file is in the proper Windows directory.
  7. Run a Full scan.

If malware may have survived a normal restart, use Microsoft Defender Offline from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first because Windows will restart.

If the file exists outside the normal Windows directories, do not restore it automatically. Investigate its digital signature and loading process first.

Where audioeng.dll should be located

On 64-bit Windows, the normal system locations are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
%WINDIR%System32audioeng.dll
%WINDIR%SysWOW64audioeng.dll

Despite its name, System32 is the 64-bit system directory on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components used through Windows-on-Windows 64-bit redirection. A 64-bit application normally uses the 64-bit set, while a 32-bit application uses the 32-bit set.

Do not use file size, a version list, or a DLL-search result as proof that a file is correct. Windows versions, servicing branches, architectures, and installed updates can have different builds. Repair the operating system instead of copying one architecture over the other.

To inspect a file:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Enter %WINDIR%System32 in the address bar.
  3. Find audioeng.dll.
  4. Right-click it and select Properties.
  5. Review the Digital Signatures tab if present.
  6. Repeat in %WINDIR%SysWOW64 on 64-bit Windows.

A missing file in one directory does not mean you should copy the other directory’s file into it.

Do not download or register audioeng.dll

Do not download audioeng.dll from a random DLL repository, forum, file-sharing page, or another computer. A replacement can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, or depend on other missing files. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or a game directory can create a mismatch that is harder to diagnose.

There is no separate official “Audio Engine redistributable.” Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the normal repair for this Windows component. Those packages matter when the error names files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll.

Do not run:

regsvr32 audioeng.dll

regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM DLLs and calls a DLL’s DllRegisterServer or DllUnregisterServer entry point. There is no Microsoft instruction to register audioeng.dll. Use Windows servicing tools, driver repair, or application repair instead.

Windows Features also do not provide a separate Audio Engine feature to reinstall. Do not enable or disable unrelated optional features as a substitute for DISM and SFC.

Fix 6: Use Windows recovery if repair fails

If DISM and SFC report that files could not be repaired, or the error returns after a successful repair, check for recurring storage errors, failed updates, malware, and third-party audio components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use these recovery options in order:

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. If the problem began recently, consider System Restore and select a restore point from before the failure.
  3. On supported Windows 11 systems, select Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
  4. If those options are unavailable or ineffective, use Windows installation media for an in-place repair installation.
  5. Back up important files before using reset or recovery options.

If the error appears during boot, use Windows Recovery Environment rather than copying files offline. System Restore can roll back system files and settings without removing personal files, but review the affected programs before confirming.

FAQ

Is audioeng.dll part of Windows or my game?

It is part of the Windows audio stack. A game may be the first application to expose the problem, but that does not make the game the owner of the DLL.

Why does only one application fail?

That application may have damaged files, an incompatible audio plug-in, or a configuration that exercises a faulty driver. Repair or verify the application first, then test Windows audio and other programs.

Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?

Not for audioeng.dll alone. Install those runtimes only when the error specifically names a related runtime file or the application’s official requirements call for them.

Does a 32-bit application need a DLL copied into its folder?

No. Windows uses its 32-bit system components through WOW64 on 64-bit Windows. Copying a DLL into the application directory can introduce the wrong version or architecture.

What if SFC says it repaired files but the error returns?

Run the tests again, check Windows Update history, inspect audio drivers and enhancements, and scan for malware. A returning error can indicate disk corruption, a recurring update problem, or a third-party audio-processing object.

What is the safest source for a replacement?

Do not seek a standalone replacement. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the PC or audio-device manufacturer’s driver, and the affected application’s official repair or installer.
