The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Raxco program that requests it, or remove an abandoned updater entry if PerfectDisk has already been uninstalled.
What this file actually does
The file’s internal description is AutoUpd Proxy. It belongs to Raxco Software’s AutoUpdps Application, an updater component distributed with older versions and regional editions of PerfectDisk.

PerfectDisk is a disk-defragmentation and storage-optimization application. The DLL appears to have supported the program’s automatic-update subsystem. Its precise exported functions and internal design are not publicly documented, so it should be treated as an application helper rather than a general-purpose Windows component.

Causes by symptom
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| PerfectDisk will not launch | The installation is incomplete or damaged | Repair or reinstall the same PerfectDisk edition |
| The error began after antivirus detection | The DLL may have been quarantined | Check Windows Security Protection history |
| The message appears during every boot | A leftover updater reference is still launching | Inspect Startup Apps, Task Scheduler, Services, and registry startup entries |
| The error started after uninstalling PerfectDisk | Uninstall cleanup was incomplete | Remove the orphaned Raxco launch reference |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The DLL or one of its dependencies may be missing | Repair the parent application and capture the full path |
| The file is in a temporary or random folder | The filename may be unrelated or masquerading | Scan the file and system before restoring anything |
| The problem occurs in another application | That program may include or call an old Raxco component | Identify the executable and its installation directory |
Representative messages include “autoupdps.dll was not found,” “The file autoupdps.dll is missing or corrupted,” “Error loading autoupdps.dll,” and “The program can’t start because autoupdps.dll is missing from your computer.” The wording alone does not identify the cause.
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting the DLL
Before replacing anything, find out which executable is trying to load the file.

Check the error dialog
Read the title bar and body of the message. It may name PerfectDisk or another Raxco-branded application. If it appears immediately after launching a shortcut, that shortcut is the first place to investigate.
Right-click the shortcut and select Properties. On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in. A target or working directory containing Raxco, PerfectDisk, or AutoUpd identifies the parent installation.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for PerfectDisk, Raxco, or another storage utility from Raxco.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Open Apps & features.
- Search for the Raxco or PerfectDisk entry.
If the program is listed, use its repair or uninstall options rather than downloading a standalone DLL.
Check the file path
If a copy of autoupdps.dll already exists, right-click it, choose Properties, and open the General and Digital Signatures tabs if present.
A file inside an old Raxco or PerfectDisk directory is consistent with the known application relationship. A file in a temporary directory, a user profile folder, or an unrelated system directory deserves additional scrutiny. A filename by itself does not prove that a file is genuine.
Fix 2: Repair PerfectDisk or the related Raxco program
Repair is the strongest first fix when the error appears while launching PerfectDisk.
Try Windows 11’s built-in repair
Some applications expose a repair action through Windows:

- Find PerfectDisk or the related Raxco program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Wait for Windows to finish.
- Launch the program again.
Many traditional desktop applications do not provide Advanced options. If that menu is missing, use the installer-based procedure below.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use Programs and Features
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the PerfectDisk or Raxco entry.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
- Follow the repair wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Try launching the original application.
If the repair option asks for installation media, use the original installer for the same edition and release. Do not mix files from unrelated PerfectDisk versions.
Run the application as administrator once
This is not a replacement for repair, but it can help an older installer or repaired application complete its setup:
- Open the Start menu.
- Find the Raxco or PerfectDisk shortcut.
- Right-click it.
- Choose More > Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Test the application.
If the program works only when elevated, its installation or permissions may still be damaged. Reinstalling it into its original application directory is preferable to permanently running every launch with administrator privileges.
Reinstall from a legitimate source
If repair fails:
- Locate the original PerfectDisk installer, approved company software repository, or a vendor-provided archive.
- Confirm that it matches the installed edition and processor architecture.
- Uninstall the damaged copy from Installed apps or Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the legitimate installer.
- Complete setup.
- Launch PerfectDisk and check whether the error has disappeared.
Raxco products are discontinued, and a current official Raxco download or supported redistributable package for this DLL cannot be confirmed. Avoid substituting a file from a DLL archive. The original installer is the appropriate source because it restores the DLL together with the executable, configuration, updater files, and matching dependencies.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A damaged or missing application DLL may have been removed by security software.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
autoupdps.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect its original path, detection name, and action.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The original path belongs to the trusted PerfectDisk installation.
- The parent application was intentionally installed.
- The file’s publisher and signature are consistent with the installation.
- A current security scan does not identify the installation as malicious.
Microsoft warns that restoring a detected file can expose the computer if the file is actually harmful. If the path is suspicious or the parent program is no longer needed, do not restore it. Remove the old program and scan the system instead.
If the file was quarantined from a trusted installation, reinstalling PerfectDisk from a clean, legitimate installer is usually safer than restoring an isolated DLL.
Fix 4: Remove a leftover updater after uninstalling PerfectDisk
A boot-time error does not necessarily mean the DLL needs to be restored. It may mean Windows is still trying to start an updater whose parent program has already been removed.

Inspect Startup Apps
On Windows 11:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Raxco, PerfectDisk, AutoUpd, or an entry with a missing file.
- Right-click the entry.
- Choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10, open Task Manager and select the Startup tab.

- Ensures that printers, headsets, and other peripherals function flawlessly.
- Saves you hours of searching for and installing the correct drivers.

Disabling an entry stops it from launching but does not remove the underlying registration. If the error returns, continue with Task Scheduler and Services.
Inspect Task Scheduler
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
taskschd.msc. - Press Enter.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks mentioning Raxco, PerfectDisk, or AutoUpd.
- Double-click a suspicious task.
- Open the Actions tab.
- Check whether it points to a missing executable or an old Raxco directory.
- If you have confirmed that PerfectDisk is gone, right-click the task and choose Delete.
Do not delete a task merely because its name is unfamiliar. Confirm its action path and parent program first.
Inspect Services
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Look for a service clearly belonging to Raxco or PerfectDisk.
- Double-click it and note the Path to executable.
- If the path points to an uninstalled directory, stop the service if it is running.
- Set Startup type to Disabled if appropriate.
- Select Apply, then OK.
If a service cannot be removed normally, use the application’s uninstaller or an approved administrative procedure rather than deleting random registry entries.
Check the Startup folders
Press Windows key + R, enter each path separately, and press Enter:
shell:startup
Then:
shell:common startup
Remove only a shortcut that clearly points to the abandoned Raxco updater. If the shortcut points to a current program, leave it in place.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only as a secondary check
Because autoupdps.dll is a third-party application file, System File Checker is unlikely to recreate it. These commands are appropriate when Windows itself shows broader corruption, application-installation failures, or damaged system components.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the security prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if DISM requests it.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary, then run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows and test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but the same Raxco error remains, that result does not prove autoupdps.dll was repaired. The missing file is still an application-installation problem, so return to the repair or reinstall procedure.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting circular. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for related Windows problems and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling the affected Raxco application remains the definitive fix for an application-specific DLL.
Fix 6: Check dependencies and architecture
A 32-bit application normally loads its 32-bit DLL from the application directory. Copying that DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 does not convert it, register it correctly, or make it compatible with every program.

If the message says “The specified module could not be found,” Windows may be reporting a missing dependency rather than the named DLL itself. In that situation:
- Record the complete error text.
- Note the executable that produced it.
- Record the full path of
autoupdps.dll, if shown. - Repair or reinstall the parent application.
- Check whether the installer reports a missing runtime.
- Install a runtime only when the complete installer or error identifies that runtime.
Do not reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because a DLL error appeared. There is no evidence that autoupdps.dll itself is one of those runtime files.
If the full error identifies a display or storage driver instead of PerfectDisk, update the relevant driver through the computer manufacturer, device manufacturer, or Windows Update:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is done by the full version. A driver update is not the definitive fix when PerfectDisk itself is the program requesting autoupdps.dll.

System Restore may help when the error began immediately after installing, removing, or cleaning up software and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert programs and system settings, but it does not guarantee recovery of a deleted third-party DLL. If the error remains, repair or reinstall the parent program.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why random DLL downloads and System32 are unsafe fixes
Do not download autoupdps.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder.
A matching filename does not establish:
- That the file came from Raxco
- That it is malware-free
- That it matches your PerfectDisk edition
- That it has the correct architecture
- That it contains the required exported functions
- That another dependency is not also missing
Manual copying can also hide an orphaned startup entry. Windows may stop displaying the original error while continuing to launch obsolete Raxco software at every boot.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general DLL repair command.
Do not run this merely because the filename ends in .dll:

regsvr32 autoupdps.dll
An application helper DLL may not be a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. The command can produce another error without restoring the application.
Use regsvr32 only when the vendor’s installation instructions specifically require registration and identify the correct file path and architecture. For the usual missing-autoupdps.dll case, repair or reinstall the Raxco application instead.
When the repair still fails
Collect these details before attempting another fix:
- The complete error message.
- The executable name shown in the dialog or shortcut.
- The full path where Windows expects
autoupdps.dll. - Whether the error occurs at boot or only when launching an application.
- Any Windows Security detection and its original path.
- The result of the repair or reinstall attempt.
- Any message naming a missing dependency.
If the file is present in the expected application directory but the program still cannot load it, the problem may be a dependent DLL, incompatible legacy software, incorrect permissions, or a mixed-version installation. Reinstall the exact application build when possible instead of replacing individual files.
Frequently asked questions
Is autoupdps.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Raxco Software’s AutoUpdps Application and older PerfectDisk products. It should not normally be present in a Windows system directory.
Does it always belong to PerfectDisk?
No. PerfectDisk is the best-known association, but the metadata identifies the broader Raxco AutoUpdps Application. Related Raxco-branded editions may also have used it.
Is autoupdps.dll safe?
The known file identity is consistent with an old Raxco installation, but safety depends on the path, signature, provenance, and parent application. A file with this name in a random directory should be scanned and investigated.
Should I restore it from antivirus quarantine?
Only if the original path belongs to a trusted Raxco or PerfectDisk installation and the file’s identity is verified. Otherwise, reinstall the application from a legitimate source and scan the computer.
What if PerfectDisk has already been removed?
Inspect Startup Apps, Task Scheduler, Services, and startup shortcuts for a stale Raxco updater reference. Remove the orphaned reference rather than restoring the DLL to keep an unwanted program running.
Will SFC or DISM restore the file?
Usually not. Those commands repair Windows components, while autoupdps.dll is an application file. Use them for broader Windows corruption, then repair or reinstall PerfectDisk separately.
Can I fix it with Windows Features?
Windows Features are not normally relevant because this is not a built-in Windows component. Do not enable .NET Framework or other optional features solely to resolve this filename unless the complete error identifies a missing dependency that requires them.
Is there a universal version of the DLL?
No. Legacy Raxco products used different builds. Restore the file from the same installer and application release rather than mixing versions from unrelated sources.
What is the safest final fix?
If you still need PerfectDisk, repair or reinstall the exact edition from a legitimate installer. If you no longer need it, uninstall the remaining Raxco software and remove the orphaned updater entry that is generating the boot-time error.
