“This application failed to start because dc265.dll was not found.” The dc265.dll error usually means a legacy camera, imaging, sign-making, or photo application has lost one of its private program files.
Do not begin by copying a random DLL into System32. dc265.dll is associated with Eastman Kodak’s DC265 SDK Win32 Ver. 1.0.0600, not with Windows itself. The reliable repair is to identify the application that needs it and restore that application as a complete installation.

- The error names a Kodak camera utility or old imaging program: reinstall that program from its original CD, installer, or verified vendor archive.
- The error appeared after an uninstall, disk cleanup, backup restore, or moving the program folder: restore the complete application or reinstall it. Copying only
dc265.dllmay leave other Kodak SDK files missing. - Windows Security recently detected or quarantined the file: check Protection History before reinstalling or restoring anything.
- The program worked on Windows 7 or earlier but stopped after upgrading: treat compatibility and obsolete camera drivers as likely causes.
- The application is WinPCSIGN, Pazzles Inspiration Studio, PhotoReflect, or another old imaging product: verify the exact product and version before using any file from elsewhere. Public inventories associate
dc265.dllwith several legacy products, but those records do not prove which version requires it. - The error says “The specified module could not be found” even though the file exists: a dependency may be missing. Reinstall the parent program rather than replacing the named DLL repeatedly.
- You have a 64-bit Windows installation: that does not mean the application or DLL should be 64-bit. Public metadata identifies
dc265.dllas Win32, and there is no reliable evidence of a 64-bit build.
What dc265.dll is
Public file metadata describes the internal name as DC265 1.0.0600 and associates the file with DC265 SDK Win32 Ver. 1.0.0600, developed by Eastman Kodak Company. The metadata also describes it as a legacy 32-bit library with 1999 copyright information.

Those details come from file inventories, not a current Kodak developer page. They identify the file’s role, but they do not establish that every copy has the same size, checksum, or installer location.
The Kodak DC265 camera documentation describes Windows software supplied with the camera, including Camera Properties, Camera Mounter, Digital Access/TWAIN, and Picture Easy. That software targeted Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0, with USB support requiring Windows 98. A modern Windows installation may therefore fail for reasons that go beyond one missing file.
dc265.dll is not a normal Windows component. There is no reason for it to be present in every copy of C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

If the application offers Windows repair
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds.
- Find the Kodak utility, camera software, imaging program, or sign-making application that displays the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and launch the application again.
Not every desktop application provides a Repair button. If there is no repair option, use the application’s original installer and select Repair, Modify, or Reinstall if offered.
If the program is not listed in Installed apps, locate its original installation media or vendor installer. Avoid downloading a loose dc265.dll from a DLL index. The installer is supposed to restore the DLL together with its companion files, registry settings, shortcuts, drivers, and runtimes.
If repair does not work
Uninstall and reinstall the application:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer by right-clicking it and choosing Run as administrator.
- Install to the normal program location unless the application documentation requires another path.
- Restart again before testing the program.
Back up any project files, camera profiles, templates, or custom settings first. Some old applications store those files inside their installation directory, while others place them under your user profile.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a legacy DLL because old software often lacks a modern digital signature. A filename alone does not prove that a file is safe or malicious.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the affected application or
dc265.dll. - Expand a detection to inspect its path and details.
- Restore the file only if you can verify that it came from the original installer, original CD, or a trusted backup.
- Reinstall the parent application instead when possible.
Microsoft says Protection History retains events for only two weeks. If the event is gone, reinstalling from trusted original media is safer than trying to reconstruct what was quarantined.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to download an unverified DLL. If Windows Security repeatedly removes a file from the official installer, stop and verify the installer’s provenance before creating an exclusion.
Fix 3: Put the correct 32-bit files back in the application folder
A 32-bit program can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows-on-Windows 64, commonly called WoW64. That does not make its DLL a 64-bit library.
The safest location for a private application DLL is normally the folder containing the program’s executable. For example, if the program starts from:
C:Program Files (x86)LegacyAppLegacyApp.exe
its installer may place dc265.dll in:
C:Program Files (x86)LegacyApp
Do not assume this location. The exact folder must come from the original installer or a known-good installation of the same application and version.
To inspect the program:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Confirm that the executable and its installed files are together.
- If the shortcut points to a missing or moved folder, reinstall the application instead of editing the shortcut blindly.
Never copy the file into both System32 and SysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, those directories are subject to architecture rules and filesystem redirection. Mixing old third-party DLLs into them can cause another application to load the wrong version.
If one old application works after restoring its private copy but another still fails, the programs may require different builds of similarly named libraries. Keep each application’s files in its own installation directory.

Fix 4: Test legacy compatibility
The Kodak DC265 software stack predates Windows 11 and Windows 10 by many years. Even a complete installation may fail because it expects old Windows behavior, a legacy TWAIN component, or a camera driver that current Windows no longer supports.
Start with compatibility settings:
- Right-click the application executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Test an older Windows version offered by the dialog, beginning with the version closest to the application’s original documentation.
- Select Run this program as an administrator if the program needs to write inside its own installation directory.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program.
Use administrator mode as a compatibility test, not as a permanent substitute for repairing permissions. If it works only as administrator, the application may be trying to write files to a protected location.
For camera software, compatibility mode may fix the interface while leaving the camera connection unusable. The DC265 documentation describes an era of Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, USB support, and TWAIN-style components. A current Windows release may not provide the required driver model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the program needs the camera itself:
- Connect the camera only after installing the original software, unless the manual says otherwise.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, Imaging devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Other devices.
- Look for an unknown device or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- If a verified vendor driver exists for your Windows version, install it from the vendor’s original support source.
- If no compatible driver exists, test the full workflow on an older supported Windows installation or a virtual machine.
Do not force a random driver package onto the device. A driver that makes the device appear in Device Manager may still be incompatible with the camera software.
Manually checking every chipset, USB, camera, and graphics driver is slow, especially on a legacy system with unclear hardware support. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full-version driver installation is optional, and reinstalling the original application remains the definitive fix for an app-owned dc265.dll.
Fix 5: Determine whether another dependency is missing
Windows can report that a DLL “could not be found” when the named DLL exists but one of the DLLs it needs is absent. The message “The specified module could not be found” is especially misleading in this situation.
Check the following:
- Is
dc265.dllin the application’s own folder? - Does the executable start from the folder you inspected?
- Did you restore the entire application directory or only one file?
- Does the installer include other Kodak SDK, TWAIN, camera, or runtime files?
- Did the problem begin after moving the application to another drive?
- Does the application require access to a removable camera or device?
The safest dependency repair is another repair or reinstall of the complete parent application. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because a DLL error appeared. The available evidence does not establish that dc265.dll normally belongs to a Microsoft redistributable.
If you use a dependency-analysis utility, obtain it from a trusted source and inspect the application offline where possible. Do not replace every red or unresolved entry automatically. Old applications often contain optional imports, obsolete APIs, or dependencies that are loaded only when a particular camera is connected.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Windows repair commands are useful when multiple unrelated programs are failing, Windows features are broken, or system corruption is suspected. They normally repair protected Windows components, not a missing third-party Kodak DLL.

First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application again.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application after restarting. If it reports that it could not repair some files but the dc265.dll error remains isolated to one legacy program, return to the parent application reinstall rather than repeating system scans.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can waste time when the missing file is simply absent from an old application folder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what needs attention; its full-version repair is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the specific program that owns dc265.dll.
Fix 7: Use System Restore only for a recent disappearance
System Restore may help if the application worked recently and the file vanished after a driver installation, cleanup utility, or software change. It rolls back system files and settings, not personal documents.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore is not a replacement for reinstalling unsupported legacy software. If the program was already incompatible with the current Windows release, restoring an older system state may not make its camera driver work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 usually does not fix dc265.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain ActiveX and COM components. It is not a general-purpose “install DLL” command.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Running:
regsvr32 dc265.dll
may produce an error such as a missing entry point, architecture mismatch, or another loader failure. That does not prove the file is corrupt.
Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation specifically says that this component must be registered. For a normal Kodak SDK runtime library, repair the parent application instead.
Avoid random DLL downloads
A loose download can be:
- The wrong version for your application.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing its own dependencies.
- Modified or bundled with unwanted software.
- Located in the wrong directory.
- Incompatible with another old program already installed.
The filename alone also says nothing conclusive about malware. A file that appears to have the right name can still be unsafe.

The safe sources are the original application CD, a verified backup of that application, or an official vendor archive for the exact product. There is no current official Kodak standalone download identified here for the complete DC265 SDK Win32 package. Do not treat a third-party file listing as an official Kodak installer.
If nothing works
At this point, separate the missing-file problem from the compatibility problem:
- Confirm that the original application is fully installed.
- Confirm that
dc265.dllcame from that installation or trusted media. - Test the application without connecting the camera.
- Test compatibility mode.
- Check Device Manager for an unsupported camera or TWAIN device.
- Try the complete workflow in an older Windows environment that matches the software’s original requirements.
- Export or convert important files to a current application where possible.
For discontinued Kodak camera products, current manufacturer support may not cover the old software or drivers. An older dedicated Windows installation or virtual machine can preserve the application without placing its legacy DLLs into the modern Windows system directories.
FAQ
Is dc265.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Eastman Kodak’s DC265 SDK Win32 software and legacy applications that used Kodak imaging components.
Which application uses dc265.dll?
The most likely parent is Kodak DC-series camera software or another legacy imaging application. Public program inventories also associate the filename with WinPCSIGN Letter, Pazzles Inspiration Studio, and PhotoReflect, but those associations are not definitive vendor dependency statements.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I download dc265.dll separately?
No. Restore it through the original application installer or trusted backup. A standalone DLL may be the wrong version and may not include the dependencies the program needs.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Put it in the application directory only when the original installer places it there. Do not distribute an old third-party DLL through Windows system directories.
Does a 64-bit Windows PC need a 64-bit dc265.dll?
Not necessarily. Public metadata identifies this file as Win32. A 32-bit application needs its 32-bit library and compatible 32-bit dependencies, even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file is present?
The file may depend on another missing DLL, driver, or runtime component. Reinstall the complete parent application and inspect the camera or TWAIN components before replacing dc265.dll.
Will registering the file fix the error?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose registration entry points. It is not a routine repair for an application’s private SDK library.
Is installing Visual C++ the answer?
There is no evidence that installing a Visual C++ Redistributable is the normal fix for dc265.dll. Install a runtime only when the error identifies that specific Microsoft dependency or the original application installer requires it.
