The game behind that promise is Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, an open-world action RPG from Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft. Set on Pandora’s Western Frontier, it lets you play as a Na’vi fighting the RDA—and, since a free update released on December 5, 2025, you can switch between first- and third-person views while playing.
What is the Avatar open-world game called?
It is Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Ubisoft describes it as an adventure on Pandora’s Western Frontier in which you play as a Na’vi opposing the RDA. The game was developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft. The “game we’ve spent years begging for” framing is a way to describe its appeal, not an official Ubisoft tagline.

Can you play as a Na’vi?
Yes. In the main game, you take the role of a Na’vi fighting the RDA in the Western Frontier. Its later expansion, From the Ashes, has a distinct playable protagonist: So’lek, a Na’vi warrior from the Trr’ong clan. Ubisoft says the expansion’s story of vengeance and survival takes place shortly after the main game and follows an attack by the RDA and the Ash clan. Ubisoft lists the expansion as available.
Is Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora open world?
Yes. The game is presented as an open-world action RPG set in Pandora’s Western Frontier. That makes the appeal more specific than simply starring in an Avatar story: the setting is the place you explore and fight in as a Na’vi, rather than a backdrop for a separate film retelling.

Can you play it in third person?
Yes. Ubisoft’s free update went live on December 5, 2025, adding third-person play and allowing you to switch between first- and third-person views during play. This updates older descriptions that refer to the game only as a first-person experience. Read Ubisoft’s update announcement.
What does New Game+ add?
New Game+ unlocks after you complete the main game’s story. Ubisoft says it carries over your inventory and skills, reveals the map from the start, and adds tougher enemies, a new skill tree, and more powerful gear. It applies to the main game, not the The Sky Breaker or Secrets of the Spires story packs, according to the update announcement.

What is the From the Ashes expansion?
From the Ashes is an expansion with its own story and protagonist, So’lek. Ubisoft announced its release for December 19, 2025, alongside the theatrical release of Avatar: Fire and Ash. The announcement listed Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Amazon Luna, and PC through Ubisoft Connect, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Ubisoft’s February 17, 2026 announcement named PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC as purchase platforms, and said the game was available through PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate at that time. Ubisoft also listed Ubisoft+ as a subscription option.
