Start with this diagnostic checklist
avglog.dll is a legacy AVG file, not a Windows component. If avglog.dll appears in the error, the first question is which old AVG installation is still trying to load it.
Before changing anything, record:
- The program named in the error: Is it an AVG executable, service, startup item, or another application?
- When the error appears: During sign-in, at startup, when launching AVG, or when opening a particular program?
- The requested path: Look for a path such as
C:Program FilesGrisoftAVG7avglog.dllorC:Program FilesGrisoftAVG Freeavglog.dll. - Recent changes: Did you uninstall AVG, restore an old backup, run disk cleanup, install an update, or see an antivirus quarantine warning?
- Windows architecture: Check Settings → System → About → System type. Historical records describe
avglog.dllas a 32-bit Win32 AVG module, even on a 64-bit Windows installation.
Do not begin by downloading the filename from a DLL website or copying it into C:WindowsSystem32. That usually treats the symptom while leaving a damaged AVG installation or stale startup entry behind.

What avglog.dll belongs to
avglog.dll is identified as the AVG Logging Module, historically associated with the AVG 7.0 Anti-Virus System from GRISOFT, s.r.o. It was used by older AVG Free and AVG Anti-Virus installations, commonly under a GrisoftAVG7 or GrisoftAVG Free folder.

Historical AVG 7.x installations did not all use exactly the same build or file details. Later AVG releases also used differently named modules, including avglogx.dll and avgloga.dll. Those files are not interchangeable with avglog.dll, and a file with a similar name is not proof that it belongs in the old AVG directory.
Common loader messages include:
- “This application failed to start because avglog.dll was not found.”
- “The file avglog.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: avglog.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading avglog.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because avglog.dll is missing from your computer.”
These are generic Windows loader messages. The wording alone does not prove whether avglog.dll itself is missing, whether a dependency is missing, or whether a stale AVG entry is being launched.
Fix 1: Repair the AVG installation that owns the file
This is the safest first fix when the requested path points into an AVG folder and you still need that AVG installation.
For a current AVG installation
- Open AVG.
- Select Menu.
- Select Settings.
- Open General → Troubleshooting.
- Choose Add / Modify Components.
- Apply the change and restart Windows if AVG requests it.
After restarting, launch AVG again and check whether the error returns. A successful repair should allow the AVG interface and its startup components to load without the missing-file message.
This repair process is for current AVG products. It is not proof that a modern AVG installer will recreate the exact legacy avglog.dll used by AVG 7.x.
If AVG will not open
Use AVG’s official removal utility rather than manually deleting individual DLLs or registry entries.
- Obtain
avg_av_clear.exefrom AVG’s official support or installation pages. - Right-click the file and select Run as administrator.
- Allow the computer to restart into Safe Mode when prompted.
- Select Remove if you want to eliminate the damaged installation.
- Select Remove & Reinstall if that option is offered and you want a supported AVG installation.
- Restart Windows normally.
- If reinstalling, use AVG’s current installer,
avg_antivirus_free_setup.exe.
Do not assume this process will restore compatibility with AVG 7. A current AVG product and a historical AVG 7 installation are different product generations. If the old program is no longer needed, complete removal is usually better than trying to preserve one obsolete DLL.

How to tell whether this fix worked
The fix worked if:
- AVG opens normally.
- The startup error no longer appears.
- The old
GrisoftAVG7reference is gone or the complete AVG installation is present. - Windows no longer reports a missing
avglog.dllwhen you sign in.
If the message remains after removal, a service, scheduled task, startup item, or old application shortcut may still be calling the deleted AVG component. Continue to the startup checks below.
Fix 2: Remove a stale AVG installation completely
A partially removed antivirus program can leave behind a reference to a file that no longer exists. This is especially likely when the error appears immediately after signing in rather than when opening a known program.

First, check installed applications:
- Press Win + I.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for AVG, Grisoft, or an old AVG Free entry.
- Select the entry and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
If the normal uninstall fails or the entry is incomplete, use avg_av_clear.exe as described above.
Then inspect the remaining launch points:
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for AVG, Grisoft, or an unknown entry that points to an old AVG folder.
- If the entry clearly belongs to the removed installation, right-click it and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Check Services
- Press Win + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Look for services clearly named AVG or Grisoft.
- Do not stop or disable a service merely because its name is unfamiliar.
- If AVG’s official remover has already removed the product but an obsolete AVG service remains, use the vendor removal process again rather than deleting registry entries manually.
Check Task Scheduler
- Press Win + R.
- Type
taskschd.mscand press Enter. - Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for tasks clearly associated with the old AVG installation.
- Check the Actions tab to see the executable path.
- Disable or remove a task only when its path and publisher clearly identify it as an obsolete AVG task.
If the erroring executable is not part of AVG, note its full path before disabling anything. That path determines who owns the request.

A genuine AVG file can be quarantined, but an unexpected avglog.dll can also be a malicious file using a familiar name. Do not restore it based on the filename alone.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the event involving
avglog.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect:
- The full file path.
- The detected publisher or signature information.
- The detection name.
- The date and action taken.
- Restore the file only if the path belongs to the expected AVG installation and the surrounding product is legitimate.
- If the file is in a temporary directory, a user profile folder, a game folder, or an unexpected system directory, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
Microsoft warns that allowing a genuinely malicious file can put the computer at risk. If the path does not match an AVG installation, scan first and investigate the launching program instead of restoring the DLL.
A quarantine restoration is only a temporary test. If restoration makes AVG start but the error returns after another update or scan, repair or reinstall the complete AVG product.
Fix 4: Check for a missing dependency
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that avglog.dll itself is absent. Windows may find avglog.dll but fail to load another library that it requires.
Historical AVG 7 process reports show adjacent dependencies such as MSVCP71.dll, MSVCR71.dll, and MFC71.dll. This makes a missing runtime dependency possible, but it does not prove that a Visual C++ runtime is the cause of every avglog.dll error.
Use this order:
- Confirm that
avglog.dllexists in the expected AVG directory. - Check whether the error specifically names another DLL.
- If a Microsoft runtime is named, install the appropriate supported Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft.
- Match the architecture required by the application. A 32-bit AVG program generally requires the x86 runtime, even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
- Restart Windows and test the original AVG executable.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET at random. Current Visual C++ packages do not replace avglog.dll, and installing one will not repair a missing AVG installation.
If the old AVG program requires obsolete runtime components that are unavailable or incompatible with the current Windows version, reinstalling the complete legacy program may still fail. In that situation, removing the obsolete AVG reference is safer than assembling individual DLLs.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other system errors exist
avglog.dll is not a protected Windows system file, so System File Checker will not normally recreate it. Use Windows repair commands when you also have corrupted system files, update failures, crashes, or multiple unrelated Windows errors.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If both commands complete without finding a problem, return to the AVG repair and startup checks. Repeating SFC will not manufacture a legacy third-party DLL.
Manually checking component health and interpreting repeated SFC/DISM output can be tedious when you do not know which Windows component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version, but it is not required, and reinstalling the AVG program remains the definitive fix when AVG owns the file.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent AVG change
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after an AVG update, uninstall, cleanup operation, or system change.
- Press Win + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error appeared.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
- Continue with the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal documents.
After the restore, test the program that produced the error. If the old AVG installation returns, do not keep using an unstable legacy antivirus indefinitely. Repair it as a complete installation or remove it with the official AVG remover.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall drivers only when the evidence points there
A driver is not the normal owner of avglog.dll. Device Manager and driver updates are therefore not first-line fixes for this particular file.
Use Device Manager only if the error appears alongside a device problem, such as a failed network adapter, storage controller, or security device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message and note the device model.
- Use Update driver or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Do not replace drivers simply because avglog.dll is missing. If the erroring executable is an AVG service, the owning AVG installation still needs repair or removal.
Recommended Free Tools
Hunting through Device Manager for stale drivers and guessing which of many versions is relevant can take longer than the actual repair. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling AVG when AVG owns avglog.dll.
Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong fix
Do not register avglog.dll with regsvr32 merely because Windows reports a missing DLL.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that the historical AVG logging module is a self-registering COM component. A registration attempt may produce another error without restoring the AVG installation.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically documents that the particular DLL must be registered. That condition does not apply to the normal avglog.dll repair path.
Why copying the file to System32 fails
A DLL belongs with the application that loads it. Copying avglog.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can:
- Put the wrong release where another program may find it.
- Mix a 32-bit legacy file into an unrelated system location.
- Leave the original AVG installation broken.
- Hide a stale startup reference.
- Create an opportunity for a malicious same-named file to be loaded.
Windows searches several locations for DLLs, including application directories. An avglog.dll found in a temporary folder, game directory, download folder, or unexpected system path should be treated as suspicious rather than moved into a Windows folder.
Manual restoration is defensible only from the original installer, a trusted backup, or a confirmed quarantine item, and only when the AVG release, path, signature, and architecture match. Reinstalling the complete product is preferable.
If a game or unrelated application reports the error
Evidence for avglog.dll points primarily to old AVG executables, services, and startup entries, not modern games or general application runtimes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf a game launcher reports the message:
- Check the exact executable path shown by the launcher or Event Viewer.
- Confirm whether the missing file is inside the game’s installation directory.
- Use the launcher’s Verify files or equivalent function only if the publisher confirms that the game owns the DLL.
- Scan the file and its directory before restoring anything.
- Do not copy an AVG DLL into the game folder.
If the file is requested from GrisoftAVG7, the game may simply be exposing a stale AVG startup component during launch. Remove or repair AVG rather than changing the game files.
What to do when the old AVG installer is unavailable
No current official AVG download for the exact legacy avglog.dll file has been verified. Do not fill that gap with a random DLL archive, a file copied from another computer, or a different AVG release.
Use this decision:
- You still need AVG: Remove the damaged legacy installation and install a currently supported AVG product from its official installer.
- You no longer need AVG: Run the official AVG remover, restart, and clean up only clearly identified stale startup, service, or scheduled-task references.
- You need the old application for a specific reason: Restore it from its original installer or a trusted backup, ideally in an isolated environment, and do not mix files from different AVG generations.
- The path is suspicious: Leave the file quarantined, scan the system, and investigate the program requesting it.
A current Windows installation may not run AVG 7 reliably even if the missing file is restored. The correct objective is a coherent supported installation, not merely making one loader message disappear.

FAQ
Is avglog.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a historical AVG/Grisoft application DLL and should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is avglog.dll part of AVG 7?
It is associated with the AVG 7.0 Anti-Virus System and historical AVG 7.x installations, including old AVG Free directories. Reported builds varied, so one version number should not be treated as universal.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
Historical records describe it as a 32-bit Win32 GRISOFT binary. Do not substitute a differently named AVG module or assume that a 64-bit equivalent exists.
Can I download avglog.dll by itself?
That is unsafe and usually ineffective. A random copy may contain malware, belong to the wrong AVG release, use the wrong architecture, or leave the damaged installation and startup reference untouched.
Will SFC restore avglog.dll?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. avglog.dll is a third-party AVG application file.
Should I install Visual C++?
Only when the error identifies a missing Microsoft runtime or the complete AVG installation has a confirmed runtime dependency problem. Visual C++ does not replace avglog.dll.
Should I use regsvr32 avglog.dll?
Normally no. Registration is not a general DLL repair method, and there is no reliable evidence that this AVG logging module requires COM registration.
Why does the error appear after AVG was uninstalled?
The uninstall may have left a startup entry, service, scheduled task, or shortcut that still requests the deleted file. Run the official AVG remover, restart, and inspect the remaining reference path.
What if the error returns after every repair?
Find the executable path that launches it. If it points to an old AVG directory, remove the obsolete installation completely. If it points somewhere unexpected, scan the system and investigate possible DLL hijacking before restoring any file.
