- VB6.exe will not start or debugging stopped working: Repair or reinstall Visual Basic 6.0.
- The problem began after antivirus activity: Check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- You copied VB6 to a new computer: Install it properly from the original media rather than copying one DLL.
- A third-party program shows the error: Repair that product with its own installer or contact its vendor.
- Only an ordinary compiled VB6 application fails: Check whether the error is actually about
msvbvm60.dll, a runtime component, rather thanvb6debug.dll. - Other Windows programs also fail: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- The message mentions registration, an entry point, or a class: Treat it as a broader compatibility or dependency problem. Do not assume copying the DLL will solve it.
vb6debug.dll is associated with the Visual Basic 6.0 IDE and is normally found in the installation’s VB98 directory. It is not normally expected in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Fix 1: Repair Visual Basic 6.0 from its installer
This is the safest and most likely fix when VB6.exe, project loading, or IDE debugging is affected.

Find the original installation source
Use one of these sources:
- The original Visual Basic 6.0 CD or mounted installation image
- A legitimate company software archive
- An authorized installer supplied by the organization that deployed VB6
- The original vendor installer if another product bundled the development environment
Do not download a loose copy of vb6debug.dll from a random DLL website. The file may contain malware, belong to a different service-pack build, use the wrong architecture, or still fail because VB6 also needs its registry entries and related files.
Run the repair or reinstall
- Close Visual Basic 6.0 and any program that uses it.
- Insert the installation media or mount the installation image.
- Open File Explorer and browse to the installer.
- Right-click
SETUP.EXE. - Select Run as administrator.
- If Windows displays a compatibility prompt, choose the option to continue with the installation.
- Select Repair, if the installer offers it.
- If repair is unavailable, choose the Visual Basic 6 development components and reinstall them.
- Keep the installation in one consistent location. Do not mix files from different VB6 installations.
- Restart Windows when setup finishes.
Open the Start menu and launch Visual Basic 6. Create or open a test project, then enter break mode or start debugging.
If repair does not work
Uninstalling and reinstalling may be necessary:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Search for Visual Basic 6 or the Visual Studio 6 installation.
- Select its menu button and choose Uninstall, if present.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer again as administrator.
- Apply the same service-pack level used by the rest of the installation.
The installer may not appear in modern Settings because VB6 is a legacy product. If it is absent, use Control Panel:
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the Visual Basic or Visual Studio entry.
- Choose Change or Repair, if available.
The VB6 IDE is a 32-bit application. On 64-bit Windows, it runs through the Windows 32-bit compatibility environment. A normal repair should preserve the correct 32-bit files and registration. Do not replace the file with a similarly named 64-bit DLL.
Fix 2: Apply a matching Visual Basic 6 service pack
A service-pack mismatch can leave the IDE with files from different builds. This is especially likely after migrating VB6 to another computer, restoring an old disk image, or applying only part of an update.
Microsoft provides the VB60SP6-KB2708437-x86-ENU.msi package as a Visual Basic 6.0 SP6 cumulative security update. It is an update for an existing VB6 environment, not a clearly documented standalone vb6debug.dll installer.
Before applying it:
- Confirm that Visual Basic 6.0 is already installed.
- Make sure the installer matches the language and installation used by the system.
- Close VB6 and other development tools.
- Right-click the Microsoft package and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the update.
- Restart Windows.
- Test VB6 again.
Do not combine files from an unrelated Visual Studio release. In particular, vbdebug.dll from Visual Studio 2010 is a different component from vb6debug.dll.

A cumulative update cannot replace the full IDE installation.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine an old development component, especially after a repair or file copy.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry referring to the VB6 installation directory or
vb6debug.dll. - Expand the entry and review the detected path and reason.
- Do not restore the file if you cannot verify that it came from legitimate Visual Basic 6 installation media.
If the file was removed from a genuine VB6 installation:
- Repair or reinstall VB6 from the original source.
- Let Windows Security scan the installer and installation directory.
- If Microsoft Defender continues detecting the file, leave it quarantined and contact the software administrator or vendor.
- Do not blindly choose Allow on device.
After a verified restore or repair, restart Windows and test VB6. If the file disappears again, the security detection or the installation source must be resolved before further troubleshooting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 4: Repair the owning third-party application
A game or ordinary compiled VB6 application normally should not need the VB6 IDE debugger. If a third-party product reports vb6debug.dll, it may include VB6 development tools or have an incomplete installation.
Use the product’s supported repair process:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Open its menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall and reinstall the program from its official installer.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
For older software, open Control Panel, select Programs and Features, right-click the product, and look for Repair or Change.
If the product was supplied by an employer, manufacturer, or specialist software vendor, use its installation package instead of installing Visual Basic 6 independently. The vendor may have bundled a specific VB6 build or configuration.
Fix 5: Confirm that the error is not about the VB6 runtime
vb6debug.dll and msvbvm60.dll serve different purposes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
vb6debug.dllis associated with Visual Basic 6.0 development and debugging.msvbvm60.dllis a common VB6 runtime component used by compiled applications.- Installing the ordinary VB6 runtime will not generally restore an IDE-only debugging DLL.
Read the complete error message carefully. If it names msvbvm60.dll, repair the application or install its legitimate runtime prerequisites instead. Do not substitute one file for the other.
Also check the spelling. vbdebug.dll from another Visual Studio release is not the same file as vb6debug.dll.
Fix 6: Do not use Regsvr32 as a universal repair
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no general Microsoft instruction requiring independent registration of vb6debug.dll.
Running this command is therefore not a reliable fix:

regsvr32 vb6debug.dll
It may report that DllRegisterServer was not found, or it may change registration without repairing the VB6 IDE. It can also create confusion about whether the correct 32-bit or 64-bit version was used.
If a specific product’s official documentation explicitly instructs you to register a component, follow that product-specific instruction. Otherwise, use the VB6 or application installer.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
This is less likely to restore vb6debug.dll because Microsoft does not identify it as a Windows-shipped VB6 runtime file. Use these commands when other Windows programs also show missing or corrupted system-file errors.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.

- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.

- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, test VB6 again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run the commands again only if Windows reports an additional repair action. If VB6 alone remains affected, return to the VB6 installer rather than repeatedly running SFC.
Manually checking Windows components and repeating DISM and SFC can be tedious when the underlying cause is unclear. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for repairing Visual Basic 6.

The file can exist and still fail to load if the installation directory is inaccessible or the user profile is damaged.
- Browse to the Visual Basic 6 installation directory.
- Open the
VB98folder. - Confirm that
vb6debug.dllis present. - Right-click the folder and select Properties.
- Open the Security tab.
- Confirm that your account has permission to read and execute files.
- Avoid moving individual DLLs to
System32,SysWOW64, or a random application folder.
If VB6 was installed under a protected directory, launch the IDE once by right-clicking its shortcut and selecting Run as administrator. If that works only for the administrator account, the problem may involve permissions, compatibility settings, or a damaged user profile rather than a missing DLL.

Fix 9: Consider System Restore after a recent system change
Use System Restore only when the error began after a known update, application installation, or configuration change and a restore point predates the failure.
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish if you accept the rollback.
System Restore can remove applications, drivers, updates, and settings installed after the selected restore point. It does not replace the need for a correct VB6 installer, and it should not be used merely because a loose DLL is unavailable.
Driver and compatibility checks
A display or device driver is not the normal owner of vb6debug.dll. However, if VB6 began failing after a graphics, printer, or hardware change, install the driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer or use Windows Update.
To check Windows-managed driver updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install only updates appropriate for the affected hardware.
- Restart Windows.
You can also inspect a specific device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
Manually hunting through hardware pages and comparing driver versions can be time-consuming when several devices are involved. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing what it identifies; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is optional.
Prevention
- Keep the complete VB6 installation media with the same service-pack level as the installed environment.
- Back up the whole VB6 installation and its installer information, not just individual DLLs.
- Do not copy
vb6debug.dllbetween unrelated computers or service-pack builds. - Do not place it in
System32orSysWOW64. - Keep Windows Security enabled, but verify a detection’s path and provenance before restoring a quarantined file.
- Record whether the software needs the VB6 IDE, the VB6 runtime, or a vendor-specific legacy installation.
- Avoid mixing Visual Basic 6 files with similarly named components from later Visual Studio releases.
FAQ
Is vb6debug.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with the Visual Basic 6.0 development environment and is not normally expected as part of Windows itself.
Should I download vb6debug.dll separately?
No. Use the original Visual Basic 6 installer, a legitimate application installer, or an authorized vendor repair package. A loose DLL can be malicious, incompatible, or insufficient because the IDE also needs related files and configuration.
Will installing the VB6 runtime fix this error?
Usually not. The runtime and the VB6 IDE debugger are separate components. Repair the product that actually reports the error.
Should I copy the file to System32?
No. vb6debug.dll is primarily a 32-bit development component and normally belongs in the VB6 installation directory, commonly its VB98 folder.
Does Windows 64-bit prevent VB6 from working?
Not automatically. VB6 is a 32-bit IDE and runs through the 32-bit compatibility environment on 64-bit Windows. The installation must remain coherent and use compatible 32-bit components.
Why does regsvr32 say the entry point was not found?
The DLL may not be intended for independent COM registration. Use the VB6 or application installer rather than treating that message as proof that another DLL copy is needed.
What if the file exists but VB6 still will not start?
Check antivirus quarantine, permissions, mixed service-pack files, dependent components, and the exact error text. Messages such as “entry point not found,” “class not registered,” or “initialization failed” indicate a broader installation or compatibility problem.
What is the correct final fix?
For the VB6 IDE, repair or reinstall Visual Basic 6.0 from legitimate media and apply the matching service pack. For a third-party application, repair or reinstall that application through its supported installer.
