Check side paths and unmarked conversations, upgrade favored gear at Party Camp, and choose abilities across skill trees to match how you want to fight. The game’s later updates also add custom difficulty controls and a New Game Plus mode, so launch-era advice may not reflect every option available now.
Explore beyond quest markers
Avowed’s open zones reward attention. Optional quests, treasure, lore, and points of interest may sit off the marked route, and some NPCs have worthwhile conversations even when they have no quest marker. If a path, sound, or visual detail seems unusual, investigate it: parkour routes can lead to hidden spaces, while riverbeds, underground pools, and the areas behind waterfalls can conceal secrets.
Treasure maps are illustrated clues rather than simple map pins, so compare their landmarks with the surrounding landscape. Bounties and other optional activities are also reasons to revisit areas rather than treating the main quest as the only route through a zone. Xbox Wire’s Avowed survival guide highlights these exploration cues and hidden routes.
Keep your equipment up to date
When a quest becomes difficult, check your equipment as well as your character level. The guide recommends keeping favored weapons and armor upgraded instead of waiting for drops to replace everything. Gather crafting materials while exploring, then use the workshop at an established Party Camp to improve the gear you actually rely on.

Quest warnings in your journal help with route planning: no skull means the quest is considered manageable, one skull signals a challenge, and three skulls indicate especially dangerous enemies. Treat the warning as a cue to prepare or return later, not as a substitute for reading the encounter itself.
Make Party Camp part of your routine
Party Camp is more than a place to speak with companions. Fast travel to an established camp when you need its workshop, send items to camp if you are encumbered, and break down equipment you no longer need to collect crafting materials. You can return to your previous location using the Adra Stone or your preferred fast-travel point.
Check for companion speech prompts while you are there. Conversations can provide training and permanent stat benefits; Xbox Wire’s guide gives Kai as an example of a companion who can offer training based on your fighting style. Prompts can be easy to miss if you leave camp as soon as you finish upgrading.

Use companion abilities yourself
Companions do not replace your own combat decisions. Their abilities become available or improve as the party levels, and you can activate them in combat. Add those skills to your routine rather than waiting for companions to act automatically.

That can create breathing room for a player who needs to aim a ranged weapon or cast spells. Think of companion abilities as tools for controlling a fight: use them to interrupt pressure, create space, or help you focus on a vulnerable target.
Choose skills across the trees, not by class label
Avowed is classless. Fighter, Ranger, and Wizard are useful labels for describing a play style, not fixed character classes that lock you into one ability tree. You can choose complementary abilities from different trees, so inspect the full set before committing to a narrow plan.

For instance, Ranger-tree Parry can be useful even if your character is primarily built around Fighter abilities. Consider what your preferred combat distance and risk level call for:
- Melee and control: Favor blocking or parrying, then use stun to create openings.
- Ranged combat: Look for weak points and use companion control to make room to aim.
- Magic-focused combat: Use companions to draw or disrupt enemies while you cast.
There is no single best build established by these tips. If your choices stop fitting your play style, respec is available for skeyts, so experimentation does not have to be permanent.

Enemy indicators tell you when to change tactics. A red circle marks an attack to dodge; a white diamond indicates a ranged weak point. Blocking and parrying can build stun, giving you another way to interrupt a fight and create an opening.

When you carry two weapon builds, use the quick-swap control to switch as the encounter changes. The specific button or key depends on your platform and input settings, so check your bindings rather than assuming a controller mapping applies everywhere.
Use current difficulty and update options deliberately
Obsidian’s February 2026 anniversary update added detailed custom difficulty settings, a quarterstaff, and New Game Plus. Custom modifiers are adjusted in the Game settings tab and can change player damage and resources; parry timing; enemy damage, health, attack speed, and status thresholds; companion performance; merchant prices; upgrade-material costs; environmental damage; and XP modifiers. You can adjust the modifiers during play, but using custom options invalidates the Path of the Damned achievement. See Obsidian’s anniversary update notes for the studio’s description of the update.
New Game Plus has a save-file requirement for players who have already completed the game: load a save at the point of no return or later, then finish the game to create a proper New Game Plus save. Obsidian also confirms that Avowed is available on PS5; platform-specific controls and availability can differ from the Xbox- and PC-oriented examples in older guides.
Patch 2.1 added a separate option for disabling respawning enemies in encounters added by a prior update. Find it under Settings > Gameplay > Combat. It applies to those added encounters, not to every enemy respawn throughout the game. The details are in Obsidian’s Patch 2.1 notes.
