Avowed has four companions: Kai, Marius, Giatta, and Yatzli. You can bring two into an area, so choose based on what your character needs: frontline control, ranged pressure, healing, or offensive magic. Kai and Marius join during the Dawnshore opening, followed by Giatta in Emerald Stair and Yatzli in Shatterscarp, according to the companion walkthrough.
Who are the companions in Avowed?
Each companion brings a different combat role and perspective to the journey. Obsidian’s official Avowed page identifies Kai as a coastal aumaua from Rauatai, Giatta as an animancer from Fior mes Ivèrno, and Yatzli as a practiced spellcaster. Marius rounds out the party of four.
You can take two companions with you into an area. The roles below are practical summaries, not universal rankings: which pair works best depends on your build, preferred weapons, and whether you need combat support or help with exploration. The Wizard’s Tower guide, verified for version 1.3 in April 2026, also recommends actively commanding companion abilities rather than relying only on their autonomous combat.
| Companion | Role and utility | Best fit when you want |
|---|---|---|
| Kai | Frontline disruption with melee pressure, stun, and taunt; the walkthrough also reports that he can clear vines and webs. | Control near the front line and protection from enemies closing in. |
| Marius | Ranged pressure, bleed and root effects, and detection of hidden enemies or loot; the walkthrough also describes him as a source of survival advice. | Ranged attacks, control at a distance, or help spotting things you might miss. |
| Giatta | Healing, temporary health, and speed or attack buffs; the walkthrough reports that she can activate certain switches. | Sustain, support, and assistance with some environmental interactions. |
| Yatzli | Area-oriented magical damage, slowing, and dispelling illusions, according to the walkthrough. | Magical damage against groups and help uncovering illusion-related obstacles. |
Specific ability names and mechanics can change with updates. The game’s broader combat toolkit includes swords, spells, guns, shields, grimoires, and bows; Obsidian describes companion abilities as useful in both combat and exploration. - You prefer ranged pressure: Marius adds attacks and control at a distance; Giatta can complement him with support, while Kai offers a more direct frontline presence.
- You want magical area damage: Yatzli brings that emphasis. Pair her with Kai for frontline disruption or Giatta for healing and buffs.
- You are exploring: Consider the companions’ reported environmental utility—Kai for vines and webs, Marius for detection, Giatta for certain switches, or Yatzli for illusions. These interactions are guide-reported and may depend on the obstacle.
Companion abilities are worth issuing deliberately, especially when you need a particular control effect or support action. Carrie Patel described abilities as serving combat and exploration, including helping the party get through barriers, in her Xbox Wire interview.
What happens at Party Camp?
Party Camp is both a narrative and upgrade hub. It is where companion backstories and banter can develop, and where you can access stash and upgrade screens. Patel called it “both your narrative hub and also your upgrade hub” in the June 10, 2024 Xbox Wire interview. She also said, “You can upgrade your skills and abilities anywhere as you level up throughout the course of the game,” so leveling up is not limited to camp.

Do all companions have separate companion quests?
The Gamer Guides walkthrough lists separate companion quests for Kai and Marius: “Battle Scars” for Kai and “Chorus of the Lost” for Marius. It does not list separate companion quests for Giatta or Yatzli. Here, “companion quest” means a distinct quest entry; it does not mean those characters lack personal stories, conversations, or roles in the main narrative. Patel’s interview discusses companion backstories, camp banter, and their differing perspectives on player decisions.
