Avowed gives me a different kind of fantasy RPG experience from Skyrim: large but bounded zones shaped around authored choices, action combat built for mixing weapons and magic, and a dedicated camp where the party can pause together. That is a personal comparison, not proof that Skyrim lacks exploration, magic, or companions. The difference is in how Avowed organizes those ingredients.
1. Avowed gives its world clear boundaries—and uses them to shape choices
Avowed is not a single seamless open world. Obsidian describes it as a series of large, defined zones rather than one contiguous space where players can go anywhere at any moment. Within those zones, the game still offers room to explore and make decisions; the distinction is that each place is more deliberately bounded and authored. Xbox Wire’s January 24, 2025 developer feature connects that structure to the way quests and possible outcomes are built around specific places.
That trade-off is what stands out to me. Instead of treating seamlessness as the main measure of freedom, Avowed can concentrate its design around a zone and the choices that matter there. Game director Carrie Patel describes the approach this way: “For us, choice and consequence are not about every single thing you do affecting the heat death of the universe; it’s about everything being believably built to.” The point is not that Skyrim lacks authored quests or consequential decisions; Avowed’s distinctive appeal here is its more explicitly zone-based framework.
2. Its combat invites you to combine weapons, magic, and abilities
Avowed’s combat and character building are organized around multiple ways to fight rather than a single class identity. Xbox’s February 18, 2025 launch announcement names four skill trees: Fighter, Ranger, Wizard, and Godlike. It also highlights weapons, magic, and abilities including Grimoire Snap and Blood Magic. Xbox Wire’s launch announcement and its June 10, 2024 developer discussion describe the game’s flexible combat and loadout context.
#1 Best Overall
- Welcome to the Living Lands, a mysterious island filled with adventure and danger.
- Set in the fictional world of Eora that was first introduced to players in the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Avowed is a first-person fantasy action RPG from the award-winning team at Obsidian Entertainment.
- Explore an island home to many different environments and landscapes, each with their own unique ecosystem
- Mix and match swords, spells, guns, and shields to fight your way
- Companions from a spread of species will fight alongside you, with their own unique set of abilities.
That combination is the draw for me: a build can take shape through the skills you invest in and the tools you bring into a fight, with weapon use and magic both part of the action. It’s a different emphasis, not a claim that Skyrim has no magic or weapon variety. Avowed makes the mix of combat systems and distinct skill trees an especially visible part of its identity.
3. Party Camp gives the party a deliberate place to regroup
Avowed gives its companions a dedicated gathering space between stretches of exploration. Developers describe Party Camp as a quiet respite where the party can come together, in contrast with the wilderness and the faster pace of adventuring. Patel explains that the aim was to make it feel as though the group is exploring together, then gathering somewhere calmer to share a moment of rest. The Xbox Wire developer discussion also covers party members and their abilities.

For me, that camp makes the party’s presence part of the game’s rhythm: venture out, spend time in the world, then return to a quieter shared space. It is a specific structural and tonal choice—not evidence that Skyrim has no followers or companion interactions.

Avowed is an Obsidian first-person fantasy action RPG set in Eora, the world of Pillars of Eternity. Obsidian’s official Avowed page and Xbox’s game page establish that identity. Its zones, build-oriented combat, and Party Camp give it a particular blend of authored structure and party-focused pacing. Whether that blend is preferable to Skyrim’s is a matter of taste; the useful comparison is how the games arrange their RPG systems, not a claim that one has features the other categorically lacks.
