Xbox Wire’s November 2024 launch announcement says the optional third-person mode is available through the accessibility menu; the game was originally presented as a first-person RPG.
How to switch to third person in Avowed
Open the game’s Accessibility menu and look for the third-person mode option. Xbox Wire identified that menu as the place to access it in its November 14, 2024 launch announcement. The available sources do not establish a more specific sequence of menu selections.
Why Avowed is described as a first-person RPG
Obsidian’s June 2023 announcement and later Xbox coverage framed Avowed as a first-person fantasy RPG. That description reflects the game’s initial perspective, not an exclusive camera mode: Xbox Wire’s November 2024 announcement also confirmed an optional third-person view.
The game is set in Eora, the fictional world introduced in Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity franchise. Xbox Wire listed Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC among its launch platforms in November 2024; that is launch information, not a complete statement of current availability.

What is known about the two perspectives
Xbox Wire described third person as an option for experiencing the game from another perspective, with comfort and gameplay in mind. The official materials confirm that both views are available, but do not provide a detailed comparison of camera distance, combat visibility, or mode-specific restrictions. They also do not establish that switching views prevents motion sickness or makes combat easier.
Obsidian’s March 25, 2026 Patch 2.1 notes mention an issue that occurred in third-person mode, confirming that the option was still present in the game at that update. Those notes do not establish whether the feature’s details changed afterward.
