Resident Evil Requiem looks like a return to form because it brings the series back to Raccoon City and Umbrella’s legacy, while putting horror at the center of a story that also makes room for action. Its two-protagonist design pairs Grace Ashcroft’s resource-starved survival with Leon S. Kennedy’s more combat-forward sequences. That is a persuasive creative direction, though it is not the same as proof of a broad critical consensus.
Why Requiem feels like a return to Resident Evil’s roots
Requiem is the ninth mainline Resident Evil game. Its story returns to Raccoon City and the history of the Raccoon City Incident, linking the new plot to the series’ central legacy rather than focusing on the Winters family storylines of Resident Evil 7 and Village.

Producer Masato Kumazawa described the aim as returning to “a story that continues the overarching narrative rooted in Raccoon City and the secret machinations of the Umbrella Corporation” in a PlayStation.Blog Q&A on June 26, 2025. Director Koshi Nakanishi likewise said the team wanted to steer the story back toward the main storyline after the Winters-focused games, according to a PlayStation.Blog interview published January 29, 2026.
The familiar setting and continuity are only part of the case. Capcom’s stated design also gives horror greater emphasis, while retaining combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving. The result is not simply a recreation of an older game: it combines distinct characters and pacing styles within one survival-horror adventure.

- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Grace and Leon balance vulnerability with action
FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft is a new protagonist, while Leon S. Kennedy returns as the series’ action-focused hero. A pre-release hands-on preview from Xbox described Grace’s sections as centered on scarce resources and cautious exploration, in contrast with Leon’s more action-forward sequences. The distinction helps explain how Requiem can pursue tension without making every moment play the same way.
| Protagonist | What defines the sections | What that means for the player |
|---|---|---|
| Grace Ashcroft | Resource scarcity and exploration, as described in the Xbox hands-on preview | More pressure to weigh risks and manage what is available. |
| Leon S. Kennedy | More action-forward sequences, according to the same preview | Combat takes a more prominent role than in Grace’s sections. |
These are broad contrasts, not a claim that Grace never fights or Leon never encounters horror. They describe the emphasis and pacing of their sections, rather than a strict division between “survival” and “action.”
Horror remains central, but the tension has breaks
Nakanishi said Requiem may be scarier than Resident Evil Village, while stressing that it alternates tension with relief instead of maintaining an unbroken, suffocating intensity. That balance matters: the game aims to make fear a defining element without asking players to endure the same emotional pitch throughout.

Grace’s scarcity-driven play supports that tension, while Leon’s action-oriented passages create a different rhythm. Together, the two approaches suggest a deliberate mix of fear and combat rather than a wholesale shift toward either pure horror or an action game.

Requiem lets players switch between first-person and third-person perspectives. Capcom says the options are intended to accommodate different player preferences. The available information confirms both viewpoints, but does not establish one as universally better or specify that either changes the underlying difficulty or mechanics.
- First-person: choose this if you prefer to experience the action from the character’s viewpoint.
- Third-person: choose this if you prefer a view of the character in the environment.
Rather than treating one mode as the “correct” way to play, consider which perspective makes exploration and tense encounters more comfortable for you.

Release date, platforms, and sales milestone
Resident Evil Requiem released on February 27, 2026. Capcom lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC as platforms. Check the specific platform and edition when buying, since availability can vary by region and storefront.
In an announcement on March 4, 2026, Capcom said the game had surpassed five million units sold. Separately, the company reported that the Resident Evil series had sold more than 183 million units cumulatively as of December 31, 2025; that figure is for the franchise, not Requiem alone. Capcom’s Platinum Titles sales page provides its official sales figures.

As a description of creative direction, yes: Requiem reconnects with the Raccoon City and Umbrella storyline, foregrounds horror, and uses Grace and Leon to bring contrasting survival and combat emphases into the same game. Those choices give the “return to form” reading substance beyond nostalgia for familiar names and places.
That judgment should remain distinct from a claim about consensus. The available evidence includes Capcom’s stated intent and a pre-release hands-on preview, not a representative set of current independent reviews. Whether the design works for a particular player depends in part on how they respond to its shifts between resource-conscious horror and more action-heavy play.
