Avowed launched on February 18, 2025. Obsidian Entertainment’s first-person fantasy RPG released for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC through the Xbox app, Steam and Battle.net, as well as Xbox Cloud Gaming. It was also available at launch through PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate.
The original November 14, 2024 announcement called Avowed an “Xbox console exclusive,” but that did not mean it was available only on Xbox hardware. “Console exclusive” referred to the console platform; PC and cloud versions launched alongside the Xbox release.

What was announced?
Microsoft and Obsidian announced Avowed’s February 18, 2025 release date on November 14, 2024. The game is set in the Living Lands, a region of Eora, the fantasy world established by Pillars of Eternity.
The February 18 date was the standard launch. Players who bought the Premium Edition or Premium Upgrade could start playing during early access from February 13, advertised as up to five days early.
#1 Best Overall
- Welcome to the Living Lands, a mysterious island filled with adventure and danger.
- Set in the fictional world of Eora that was first introduced to players in the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Avowed is a first-person fantasy action RPG from the award-winning team at Obsidian Entertainment.
- Explore an island home to many different environments and landscapes, each with their own unique ecosystem
- Mix and match swords, spells, guns, and shields to fight your way
- Companions from a spread of species will fight alongside you, with their own unique set of abilities.
Avowed has now launched, so the original preorder announcement should be read as historical rather than as a current release notice.
What does “Xbox console exclusive” mean?
Avowed was not an Xbox-only game. It launched on Xbox Series X|S and simultaneously received PC versions through the Xbox app, Steam and Battle.net, plus Xbox Cloud Gaming.
The phrase described Avowed’s console availability. The official platform lists did not include an Xbox One version, and the launch announcements did not list PlayStation or Nintendo platforms.

Microsoft’s launch announcement confirmed the final availability across Xbox, PC storefronts and cloud.
Was Avowed included with Game Pass?
Yes. Avowed was available day one through PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate. Microsoft’s February 2025 Game Pass listing identified access on cloud, PC and Xbox Series X|S.

That does not mean every Game Pass tier automatically included every version. Game Pass catalog access, plan benefits and regional availability can change, so current subscribers should check the live Game Pass catalog and plan details before subscribing.
Game Pass was the practical choice for players who already subscribed or wanted to try Avowed without purchasing the full game. Buying the game remained the better fit for anyone who wanted permanent ownership.
Editions and launch prices
The following were the announced U.S. prices on November 14, 2024. They are historical launch prices, not a current price quote.
| Edition | Announced price | Contents |
|---|---|---|
| Digital Standard Edition | $69.99 | Base game |
| Digital Premium Edition | $89.99 | Base game, up to five days of early access, two premium skin packs, digital artbook and soundtrack |
| Premium Edition SteelBook | $94.99 | Premium digital contents, SteelBook and a map of the Living Lands |
| Premium Upgrade | $24.99 | Premium extras and early access for eligible Standard Edition or Game Pass players |
The SteelBook edition included a digital game code rather than a physical game disc. Regional prices, taxes, retailer discounts and later sales may differ. Current prices should be checked through the relevant Xbox Store, Steam or Battle.net listing.
How early access worked
Premium Edition buyers and eligible Premium Upgrade customers could begin playing on February 13, 2025. The benefit was advertised as up to five days of early access.
Rank #3
- Premium Edition includes: Avowed base game, Premium Skin Packs: 2 sets of bonus skins for each of your companions, and access to Avowed Digital Artbook & Original Soundtrack
- Set in the fictional world of Eora that was first introduced to players in the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Avowed is a first-person fantasy action RPG from the award-winning team at Obsidian Entertainment.
- Explore an island home to many different environments and landscapes, each with their own unique ecosystem.
- Mix and match swords, spells, guns, and shields to fight your way.
- Companions from a spread of species will fight alongside you, with their own unique set of abilities.
Early access did not replace the standard release. Players with the Standard Edition, or players using the ordinary Game Pass launch access, joined the broad release on February 18, 2025. Because that early-access window has ended, the Premium Edition’s main remaining value is its bonus content rather than earlier play.

What is Avowed about?
Avowed is a first-person fantasy role-playing game set in the Living Lands, an island region of Eora. Players take the role of an envoy connected to Aedyr and investigate a spreading soul plague known as the Dreamscourge.
The game combines exploration, combat, dialogue, companions and choices with consequences. It shares its setting with Pillars of Eternity, but newcomers do not need to have played the earlier games to understand Avowed’s central premise.
Minimum PC requirements
Xbox’s announcement listed these minimum PC specifications:

These were minimum requirements, not recommended specifications. They do not guarantee a particular resolution, frame rate or graphics preset. Players should consult the current requirements on their chosen PC storefront before installing.

Cross-buy, saves and storefront details
Avowed supported Xbox Play Anywhere when purchased through the eligible Xbox Store on Xbox or Windows PC. Microsoft also described cross-device saves, add-ons and Xbox achievements across supported Xbox and Xbox PC environments.
Storefront choice matters:
- Xbox Store/Xbox app: The relevant choice for Xbox Play Anywhere benefits.
- Steam: Suitable for players who keep their PC library there, but a Steam purchase should not automatically be treated as an Xbox Play Anywhere purchase.
- Battle.net: Game Pass access to the Battle.net version involved linking Xbox and Battle.net accounts and meeting the applicable eligibility conditions.
- Cloud: Requires a compatible subscription, supported device and supported region; it is not a standalone purchase option.
Before buying, decide whether you value an Xbox-linked entitlement, a Steam library purchase or Battle.net integration. The storefront can affect the benefits attached to the purchase.
Which option made sense?
- Standard Edition: Best for permanent ownership without early access or premium cosmetics.
- Premium Edition: Best for players who wanted early access, the two skin packs, digital artbook and soundtrack at launch.
- Premium Upgrade: Best for eligible Game Pass subscribers or Standard Edition owners who wanted the premium extras without buying the full Premium Edition.
- Game Pass: Best for subscribers who wanted to play without purchasing the game outright, while accepting that catalog access depends on Microsoft’s licensing and subscription policies.
Buying the Premium Edition solely for early access is no longer relevant because the February 2025 early-access period has ended. Likewise, current buyers should not assume the 2024 launch prices or Game Pass availability remain unchanged.
