Microsoft Edge Game Assist is available worldwide, but Microsoft now calls it Microsoft Edge for Game Bar. It is an Edge-powered browser widget built into Windows Game Bar, letting Windows 11 PC gamers search for walkthroughs, watch videos, use Discord, Twitch, Spotify and other web services, and keep a page visible over a game without repeatedly pressing Alt+Tab.
The feature became generally available on May 29, 2025, after preview releases in late 2024 and early 2025. The current experience requires Windows 11, Microsoft Edge 137 or later, and updated Game Bar software. Microsoft’s announcement and its current FAQ remain the best references for availability and changing requirements.

What is Microsoft Edge Game Assist?
Game Assist—now branded Microsoft Edge for Game Bar—is a gaming-optimized version of Edge that runs inside the Windows Game Bar overlay instead of opening as an ordinary desktop browser window.

- Looking up walkthroughs, maps, builds, quests and troubleshooting steps.
- Watching guide videos or other web video.
- Using browser-based services such as Discord, Twitch and Spotify.
- Keeping a guide or video pinned above the game.
- Accessing Edge favorites, history, profiles and supported extensions.
Microsoft also describes enhanced-game support, which can provide game-specific tips and guide suggestions. That does not make Game Assist an AI game-playing assistant. It is primarily an in-game browser and guide surface, and it should not be confused with Xbox’s separate Gaming Copilot feature.
When did it become available?
- November 22, 2024: Microsoft introduced Game Assist as a preview for Windows 11 and Edge Beta.
- January 21, 2025: The preview expanded to Edge Stable.
- May 29, 2025: Microsoft announced worldwide general availability.
- By 2026: Microsoft’s product pages use the name Microsoft Edge for Game Bar, formerly Microsoft Edge Game Assist.

Requirements and supported devices
Microsoft lists these requirements:
- Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, with the latest updates.
- Microsoft Edge 137 or later.
- The latest available Xbox Game Bar updates.
- A supported Windows 11 edition. Microsoft specifically lists Home, Education and Pro for built-in availability.
Microsoft says the widget can also be installed from Edge Settings on other Windows 11 editions. The documented product is a Windows 11/Game Bar feature; do not assume support for Windows 10, macOS, Linux, Xbox consoles or mobile devices. Availability can still vary by device, market, installed browser version and regional rollout.

How to launch Game Assist or Edge for Game Bar
- Install the latest Windows 11 updates.
- Update Microsoft Edge.
- Update Xbox Game Bar through the Microsoft Store or Xbox app if necessary.
- Start a PC game.
- Press
Win+G. - Open the widget labelled Edge for Game Bar or Game Assist.
Both names may appear depending on your installed version and rollout status.
If the widget is missing
- Open Microsoft Edge on the desktop.
- Select Settings and more (
…). - Search Edge Settings for Game Assist or Edge for Game Bar.
- Choose the option to install the widget if it is offered.
- Reopen Game Bar with
Win+G.
Does it work with every game?
The browser widget can be used with any PC game, but game-specific recommendations are not universal. Microsoft limits enhanced tips and guide suggestions to supported enhanced games, and that list changes over time.
For a supported title, Game Assist may identify the game and show tailored resources. You can also enter the game manually:
- Press
Ctrl+Gto fill in the game name. - Alternatively, right-click and select Paste game title.
For an unsupported game, the widget remains a normal browser surface. Search for the title yourself, paste a guide URL or open any other website. “Works with every game” therefore means universal browser access—not automatic recognition or curated guides for every release.
What can you do inside the widget?
Browse and search without leaving the game
Use the address or search field to find walkthroughs, maps, builds, quest solutions, patch information and technical fixes. This is particularly useful on a single-monitor setup where switching to a desktop browser interrupts a game.

Pin a page over the game
- Press
Win+G. - Open Game Assist or Edge for Game Bar.
- Select the Pin icon in the widget title bar.
- Close the main Game Bar overlay.
The browser widget remains visible. You can move and resize it, adjust its transparency and choose whether clicks on the pinned widget are handled by the widget or passed through to the game.
To remove it, reopen Game Bar or select the visible widget, choose Unpin next to Close, and dismiss Game Bar. If the title bar or pin control is missing, move the pointer to the very top of the screen directly above the widget; positioning it too close to the top can hide the title bar.
Watch video, listen to music and use web services
Game Assist supports web video, picture-in-picture-style viewing, media-key controls for supported playback, and services including Discord, Twitch and Spotify. Extensions may also work, including some ad blockers and password managers, although extension behavior is not guaranteed to match the desktop browser.
Use Edge data and profiles
The widget can provide access to Edge favorites, history, cookies, form fills, profiles, extensions and related browser settings. This makes it convenient for people who already use Edge, but it also means the widget is not an entirely isolated browser environment.
Desktop tabs do not automatically appear in Game Assist, and tabs opened in Game Assist do not automatically appear on the desktop. The browser data can be shared while the active tab experience remains separate.
Do you need to use Edge as your default browser?
No. Microsoft says Game Assist can be used even if Chrome, Firefox or another browser is your desktop default. However, the widget itself is built on Edge and does not use an alternative browser engine.
Edge users get the most seamless access to shared favorites, history, cookies, profiles and extensions. Users who prefer another browser can keep it as the default, but should understand that opening Game Assist still adds an Edge-based browser component to Game Bar.

Performance, overlays and handheld support
Microsoft says Game Assist is optimized to use fewer resources than switching to a full desktop browser, but it also acknowledges that any additional running application can use system resources. That is an optimization claim, not a guarantee of higher frame rates or zero performance impact.

Actual behavior depends on available RAM, CPU and GPU headroom, the game and graphics settings, video playback, browser extensions, other overlays, and the game’s window mode. If performance matters, compare frame-rate or frame-time consistency with the widget closed and then with it active in the game you actually play.
Game Assist is designed to work with Game Bar’s Compact Mode on PCs and handhelds, but Microsoft says the experience is still being refined. It is optimized primarily for keyboard and mouse, so controller navigation may be less convenient—especially on a small handheld display.
It can coexist with other overlays according to Microsoft’s general compatibility guidance, but that should not be treated as a guarantee for every anti-cheat system, capture tool, exclusive-fullscreen configuration or game. Problems can vary by title.
Privacy and account considerations
Because Game Assist uses Edge’s browser backend, it can expose account context and data associated with an Edge profile, including cookies, logged-in services, favorites, history and form fills. That is useful when you want an already-authenticated Discord, Twitch or music session, but it is worth considering before pinning sensitive pages over a game or using a shared Windows account.
The widget is not simply a blank, temporary web view. Review the active Edge profile, saved passwords, extensions and logged-in services if other people can access the PC.

The widget does not appear
Check that Windows 11 and Edge are updated, confirm that Edge is version 137 or later, update Xbox Game Bar through the Microsoft Store, and search Edge Settings for both “Game Assist” and “Edge for Game Bar.” The label may have changed even though the feature is present.
Windows reports a version or update error
Verify that Windows 11 is version 22H2 or later and install the latest monthly updates. Then update Game Bar through the Microsoft Store and try again.

It is probably pinned. Open Game Bar with Win+G, select the widget and choose Unpin next to Close.

The title bar or pin button is hidden
Move the pointer to the top edge of the screen directly above the widget. The title bar can be hidden when the widget is too close to the top or when Game Bar is closed.
An enhanced game does not show tips
The game may not be supported, or its storefront information may not match Microsoft’s data. Microsoft recommends sending feedback from the widget with the game name and the storefront where it was purchased or downloaded.
A controller or handheld feels awkward
Use Compact Mode where available, but expect the best experience with keyboard and mouse. Controller support exists but is not presented as a fully controller-first interface.
How to uninstall or disable it
To remove the widget:
- Open Settings in Windows.
- Go to Apps.
- Open Installed apps or the equivalent installed-apps list.
- Search for Game Assist or Edge for Game Bar.
- Open its menu and choose Uninstall.
Microsoft says you can reinstall it later through Edge Settings. For a temporary solution, close or minimize the widget, unpin it, or close it from the widget’s Settings and more (…) menu. Microsoft also says it does not consume system resources when Game Bar is not in use and shuts down after a brief period of inactivity.
Is Microsoft Edge Game Assist worth using?
It is a strong fit for single-monitor players who frequently consult guides, watch videos or use browser-based chat and music while playing. Existing Edge users get the smoothest experience because favorites, profiles, cookies and other browser data can carry over.
It is less compelling if you have a second monitor, prefer a phone or dedicated guide app, want the lowest possible background resource use, avoid Edge, or do not want a gaming widget to access browser-profile data. It may also be a poor fit for controller-first handheld use or games where overlays create compatibility problems.
The most accurate way to view it is as a convenient Edge overlay—not an AI coach, not a replacement for a full desktop browser, and not a guarantee of game-specific help for every title. Try it with one of your regular games, pin a guide, and remove it if the overlay, resource use or shared browser context is not worth the convenience.
