avp_io32.dll Not Found: Safe Kaspersky Fixes for Windows

Length10 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

“The program can’t start because avp_io32.dll is missing”

You may also see messages such as:

  • “This application failed to start because avp_io32.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading avp_io32.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The file avp_io32.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “A required component is missing: avp_io32.dll. Please install the application again.”
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

avp_io32.dll is an old 32-bit Kaspersky Anti-Virus component. Historical Kaspersky documentation describes it as a low-level I/O driver for Windows 95/98, so it is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET component.

The safest solution is to repair or reinstall the Kaspersky installation that originally used it. Do not download a random copy and place it in System32 or SysWOW64.

Which fix applies to you

Use the situation that matches your computer:

  • Kaspersky is still installed: repair or reinstall the Kaspersky product from its official support or download page.
  • Kaspersky was recently removed: remove the leftover startup item, shortcut, service, or scheduled task still trying to launch the old component.
  • Kaspersky quarantined the file: inspect Quarantine and restore it only after verifying that it belongs to the trusted installation.
  • The error appears while installing another application: identify the executable named in the error. The installer may be launching a stale Kaspersky component or may itself be damaged.
  • The file is in System32, SysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory: treat it as suspicious until its path, signature, and owner are verified.
  • Other Windows programs also report missing or damaged files: check Windows with DISM and System File Checker, but remember that Windows does not normally supply avp_io32.dll.

What avp_io32.dll belongs to

The filename is associated with older Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Kaspersky Internet Security releases. Historical records identify it as a Win32 DLL and associate it with Kaspersky products from the older Windows 9x and early Windows eras.

That history matters because old records do not agree on one universal version or file size. Different Kaspersky releases used different files, and a copy from one release should not be mixed with another. There is no single historical avp_io32.dll that can safely be recommended for every computer.

It should normally be located beside the legacy Kaspersky executable that loads it, not copied into a Windows system directory. Windows searches several locations for DLLs, including the application’s own folder, which is why placing a replacement in a system directory can hide the real installation problem rather than solve it.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Kaspersky

This is the most likely fix when Kaspersky is still installed or the error began after an interrupted update.

Check whether Kaspersky is installed

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Search for Kaspersky, Kaspersky Anti-Virus, or Kaspersky Internet Security.
  5. Open the three-dot menu beside the entry and select Uninstall or Modify, if available.
  6. Follow the repair option if the installer provides one.

If there is no repair option, download the supported installer from Kaspersky’s official product-support or downloads page. Avoid trying to rebuild the old DLL from a third-party archive. A current Kaspersky installer may not contain this obsolete component, so reinstalling the current product is not guaranteed to recreate the historical file. It is still the correct approach when you need Kaspersky protection rather than an isolated DLL.

Restart Windows after the installation finishes.

How to tell whether this worked

Open the program that produced the error. The repair worked if:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the program starts without the avp_io32.dll message;
  • Kaspersky opens normally;
  • the error does not return after restarting Windows.

If the error remains, record the exact executable named in the dialog. The program may be loading an old Kaspersky component from a different folder, or the Kaspersky installation may be too old for the version of Windows in use.

Do not mix a file from a Kaspersky 4.x installation with a Kaspersky 7.x installation. Matching the DLL to the original product is more important than finding a file with the same name.

Fix 2: Remove a stale Kaspersky startup reference

If you uninstalled Kaspersky but the error appears on every boot, Windows is probably still launching a leftover reference.

Check Startup apps

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for entries mentioning Kaspersky, AVP, or a program you no longer use.
  4. Right-click only an entry you have positively identified.
  5. Select Disable.
  6. Restart Windows.

Disabling a startup entry is safer than deleting registry values blindly. If the error disappears, the disabled entry was likely responsible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Task Scheduler

  1. Press the Windows key and type Task Scheduler.
  2. Open Task Scheduler.
  3. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  4. Review tasks with Kaspersky-related names.
  5. Select a task and inspect the Actions tab.
  6. Confirm that its action points to a missing Kaspersky executable or to the program named in the error.
  7. Right-click only the confirmed stale task and select Disable or Delete.

Do not remove tasks merely because their names are unfamiliar. If you cannot identify the program associated with a task, leave it alone and investigate the executable path first.

Check shortcuts

The error may be attached to a shortcut that still launches an old Kaspersky executable.

  1. Right-click the shortcut that triggers the message.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Inspect the Target field.
  4. Look for a path pointing to a removed Kaspersky folder or an old executable.
  5. Delete the shortcut only if it is no longer needed.

If the message appears after signing in rather than when opening a shortcut, also check the Startup folder:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter shell:startup.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Remove only a confirmed obsolete Kaspersky shortcut.

Restart Windows and test again.

Fix 3: Check Kaspersky Quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine a DLL. The filename alone does not prove that the file is safe, so do not immediately restore it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Kaspersky is installed:

  1. Open the Kaspersky application.
  2. Select Security.
  3. Open Quarantine.
  4. Locate the item associated with avp_io32.dll.
  5. Inspect its original path and detection details.
  6. Restore it only if the path belongs to the trusted Kaspersky installation and the file is expected there.
  7. Run a scan after restoring it.

Kaspersky warns that restoring a quarantined object can reintroduce a threat. If the file repeatedly disappears, check the detection name and submit the file to Kaspersky for analysis rather than permanently disabling protection.

A file in a temporary directory, an unrelated application folder, or a Windows system directory deserves additional scrutiny. If the path is suspicious or the file has no valid Kaspersky signature, leave it quarantined and perform a full malware scan.

Fix 4: Reinstall the program named in the error

Sometimes the dialog appears during another program’s installation or startup. The important clue is the executable named in the title bar or message.

Record:

  • the application name;
  • the executable path, if shown;
  • whether the error appears during installation, startup, or every Windows boot;
  • whether Kaspersky is installed, removed, or recently updated.

If the program is a legitimate older application that bundled or relied on Kaspersky software, uninstall it through Windows and reinstall it from its official source. Do not add avp_io32.dll manually unless the original vendor specifically provides a compatible package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error appears only when launching an installer, discard that installer and obtain a new copy from the software vendor. A damaged installer may be invoking an incomplete bundled component.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

avp_io32.dll is a 32-bit component. It is not interchangeable with a 64-bit DLL.

A 32-bit application can load compatible 32-bit libraries, while a 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit DLL as a replacement for its own 64-bit dependency. Windows also applies separate 32-bit and 64-bit behavior to system directories through WOW64.

Do not try these fixes:

  • copying a 64-bit DLL over avp_io32.dll;
  • copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32;
  • copying it into C:WindowsSysWOW64;
  • renaming another DLL to avp_io32.dll;
  • replacing a Kaspersky file from a different product release.

If the error says that the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or contains an invalid image, treat it as an architecture, corruption, or obsolete-software compatibility problem. Reinstall the correct application or retire the old software instead of searching for a random replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Update a related application or device driver

Despite its historical description, avp_io32.dll is not a modern hardware driver for a graphics card, printer, chipset, or audio device. Device Manager is therefore not the primary repair location for this file.

However, if the error is being raised by a hardware utility, security suite, or bundled system-management program, update or reinstall that owning application from its manufacturer. For a genuine hardware-driver problem:

  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

If Windows cannot find a driver, visit the hardware manufacturer’s official support page and match the driver to the exact device model and Windows architecture.

Manually hunting through Device Manager and manufacturer pages can mean checking many unrelated driver versions before finding the stale package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full version performs the driver installation, but it is not required for repairing this Kaspersky-owned DLL.

Fix 7: Repair Windows system components

Windows does not normally provide avp_io32.dll, so DISM and SFC are secondary checks rather than the main repair. Use them when other Windows files are also failing or when system corruption is suspected.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to complete.

DISM may take time and can appear to pause. Do not close the window while it is working.

Run System File Checker

After DISM completes, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s supported repair sequence is DISM first, followed by SFC. Restart Windows when both commands finish.

Success means SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files or found no integrity violations, and other Windows errors improve. It does not necessarily recreate avp_io32.dll, because that file belongs to Kaspersky rather than Windows.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component is damaged can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and identify repair areas; its full version performs the repair, but Microsoft’s built-in commands remain the appropriate first check.

Fix 8: Check for disk corruption or malware

A damaged disk or malware infection can remove files, break shortcuts, or alter startup entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, run a full scan with Windows Security:

  1. Open Windows Security from Start.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Choose Full scan.
  5. Select Scan now.

If the file keeps disappearing, inspect the detection history and the original file path. Do not turn protection off permanently to keep an unverified DLL.

You can also check the drive for errors:

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt.
  2. Enter:
chkdsk C: /scan
  1. Press Enter.

Replace C: if Windows is installed on another drive. If disk errors are reported, back up important files and follow Microsoft’s repair guidance.

System Restore can help if the issue started immediately after an application removal or update:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  5. Review the affected programs.
  6. Confirm the restore.

System Restore changes system settings and installed components. It does not replace the need to remove an unwanted old application or verify suspicious files.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

Do not register avp_io32.dll with regsvr32 as a routine fix.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point, commonly used by COM components. Historical descriptions identify avp_io32.dll as a low-level Kaspersky I/O component, not a self-registering COM server.

Registering it may produce an error such as:

  • “The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.”
  • “The specified module could not be found.”

That message does not prove the DLL is missing. It may simply mean that registration is not supported by that file.

Should you download avp_io32.dll?

No. Random DLL download sites can provide:

  • malware;
  • the wrong architecture;
  • a file from an incompatible Kaspersky release;
  • an unsigned or modified DLL;
  • a file that does not include its required dependencies.

Even a clean replacement may not fix the cause. The real problem may be a stale startup reference, a damaged Kaspersky installation, a missing dependency, or an obsolete application that cannot run correctly on current Windows.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Kaspersky’s official product-support and download pages for Kaspersky software. Use Microsoft’s support pages for Windows repair commands and recovery tools.

What if the error says “specified module could not be found”?

That wording does not always mean avp_io32.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.

Identify the program that is launching it and reinstall that program or its owning Kaspersky product. Avoid copying unrelated runtime files into system directories. If the application is obsolete and no supported installer exists, retiring it may be safer than trying to reconstruct its dependency chain.

Final checks after repair

Restart Windows, then test the exact action that originally produced the message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error returns:

  1. Record the full wording.
  2. Note the executable and path shown in the dialog.
  3. Check whether Kaspersky is installed or removed.
  4. Review Startup apps and Task Scheduler.
  5. Check Quarantine.
  6. Verify the file’s location and signature.
  7. Run malware and disk checks.
  8. Reinstall or remove the application that owns the launch reference.

When no Kaspersky product remains and no legitimate historical application needs this component, investigate the process that is launching it. In that situation, removing the stale reference or unwanted software is safer and more effective than restoring avp_io32.dll.
