“The program can’t start because msdaprsr.dll is missing from your computer.” The msdaprsr.dll file is a Microsoft Data Access Components resource used by OLE DB Persistence Services, and Windows repair is usually safer than downloading a replacement DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what you are seeing:
- Several programs report the error, or Windows recently failed to update: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- Only one older application or game fails: use that program’s repair, verify-files, or reinstall option.
- The error appeared after antivirus activity: check quarantine, then verify the file and repair Windows.
- You use an old program on modern 64-bit Windows: check whether the application is 32-bit and whether it has an old data-access dependency.
- You run Windows XP or Server 2003: follow the legacy MDAC guidance instead of installing random modern packages.
- The message says “specified module could not be found”: the named file may exist while one of its dependencies is missing.
- SFC repairs the file but the program still fails: focus on the calling application, its architecture, and its remaining dependencies.
Do not begin by copying msdaprsr.dll from a DLL download site. A loose file can have the wrong version, language, architecture, or provenance, and it does not repair the component set around it.
What msdaprsr.dll actually is
msdaprsr.dll is described as Microsoft Data Access – OLE DB Persistence Services Resources. It is published by Microsoft and belongs to Microsoft Data Access Components, commonly abbreviated as MDAC.

OLE DB is Microsoft’s data-access technology for applications that need to connect to structured data sources. Persistence Services handle operations such as saving and restoring data-related objects and state. The “Resources” part of the description indicates that this DLL supplies resource content used by the OLE DB Persistence Services component. It is not a graphics library or a general-purpose Windows runtime.
Microsoft documents OLE DB as part of MDAC 2.8 on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, while Windows Vista and later use the integrated Windows Data Access Components, or WDAC. Microsoft’s OLE DB installation documentation explains that operating-system integration.
This file is therefore:
- A Windows-integrated Microsoft data-access component
- Associated with MDAC and later WDAC
- Not a Visual C++ Redistributable file
- Not a DirectX file
- Not normally a device-driver file
- Not inherently an Office, SQL Server, or game-specific DLL
An archived MDAC 2.8 manifest lists msdaprsr.dll as version 2.80.1022.0. That is a historical MDAC version, not a universal version target for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Modern Windows component versions should come from the matching operating-system image and servicing system.
A Microsoft Q&A example shows the file under:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemmsadcmsdaprsr.dll
Do not treat that path as a reason to download the file manually. The important point is that it belongs to a Microsoft data-access installation, not that every Windows installation must be repaired by copying one file into a folder.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair system files
This is the best starting point when the error affects more than one application or appeared after an interrupted update, disk problem, cleanup utility, or general system corruption.
Step 1: Install pending Windows updates
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 11, select Check for updates. On Windows 10, select Check for updates or Download and install if shown.
- Install every applicable update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
Updates can repair or replace Windows components, but a damaged component store may prevent normal servicing from completing. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Step 2: Run DISM
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Select Yes when User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the terminal while it is working.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which is the source Windows uses for protected system-file repair. Microsoft’s Repair a Windows Image guidance documents this process.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, connect to Windows Update and try again. If that still fails, a matching Windows installation source may be required with the /Source option. Do not use a random Windows image or a source from a different release.

Step 3: Run System File Checker
In the same elevated terminal, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Microsoft documents SFC in its System File Checker documentation.
Restart Windows after SFC completes, then launch the application that originally failed.

Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: the protected files appear intact, so investigate the application or a dependency.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the program again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still cannot repair Windows, move to the escalation steps below.
Repeating commands without checking what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problems involved in manual Windows repair; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands remain the supported first-line repair.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the application that reports the error
If only one old program reports msdaprsr.dll, the Windows component may be present and the application may be damaged or expecting a dependency it did not install correctly.
Use the application’s built-in repair
Look for a launcher or maintenance option:
- Open the application launcher.
- Select the affected application.
- Open its settings, manage, or installation menu.
- Choose Repair, Verify files, Scan and repair, or an equivalent option.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
For a traditional desktop application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or settings.
Some programs provide their repair function in Control Panel instead:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original vendor or launcher. Back up saved games, profiles, templates, or other application data first.
Reinstalling the application is particularly relevant when the error began immediately after an incomplete installation or when every other program works normally.
Fix 3: Check whether the error names a dependency instead
The message “Error loading msdaprsr.dll. The specified module could not be found” is ambiguous. Windows may be unable to find msdaprsr.dll, or it may have found that file but be unable to load another DLL required by it or by the calling program.

This explains why copying the named file often does nothing.
Check the following:
- Note the exact program shown in the error.
- Identify whether the failure occurs during the program’s launcher, during startup, or when opening a specific feature.
- Check the application’s official prerequisites.
- Repair or reinstall the application from its original source.
- Run DISM and SFC if multiple programs are affected.
- Avoid downloading a collection of unrelated runtime DLLs.
A missing dependency may involve a damaged application installation, an incompatible architecture, or a component removed by security software. The correct fix depends on which executable is making the request.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Windows can run 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows, but those programs may use a different set of data-access components from native 64-bit applications.
Microsoft documents separate 32-bit and 64-bit WDAC releases corresponding to the Windows architecture. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may therefore need the 32-bit component set that matches its installation.
To identify the operating-system architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
To check the application, inspect its documentation or contact the vendor. The application’s installation folder can also provide clues, but a folder name alone is not proof of its architecture.

If the program is 32-bit:
- Install the vendor’s 32-bit build where one is provided.
- Use the application’s own repair or reinstall process.
- Do not replace a system DLL with a file downloaded from an unrelated source.
- Do not assume that installing a 64-bit package will repair a 32-bit application.
If the program is very old, its installer may not understand modern Windows component layout. Compatibility settings can sometimes help the application start, but they do not replace a missing or corrupted dependency.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware
Security software can quarantine a legitimate file if it is damaged, modified, or detected in an unusual location. Malware can also use a familiar DLL name in a temporary folder or user-profile directory.
Check quarantine
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
msdaprsr.dllor the application that reports the error. - Do not restore the file automatically.
- First confirm its original path and whether the detection is trustworthy.
A file in the expected Microsoft component location is different from a file with the same name in a temporary directory, Downloads folder, or user-profile path.

After cleaning or quarantining threats, run DISM and SFC again. Do not add broad antivirus exclusions for a DLL simply to make an application start.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes it as a registration utility, not as a missing-file repair command.
msdaprsr.dll is a resource DLL and is not normally repaired by manually registering it. Running commands such as these can produce another error without fixing the original problem:
regsvr32 msdaprsr.dll
regsvr32 C:Pathmsdaprsr.dll
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically identifies a DLL that supports registration and provides the correct command for the correct architecture. For this file, Windows servicing or application repair is the appropriate default.
Fix 7: Avoid old MDAC packages on modern Windows
On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, MDAC was serviced through Windows updates and service packs. On Windows Vista and later, WDAC is integrated into the operating system.
Microsoft says the historical mdac_typ.exe MDAC 2.8 SP1 redistributable should be installed only on Windows 2000. It is not a modern Windows 10 or Windows 11 repair package. Do not install it on a current system to replace msdaprsr.dll.
For supported modern Windows versions:
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Run DISM.
- Run SFC.
- Repair or reinstall the application.
- Investigate architecture and dependencies.
For an old Windows installation, apply the service packs and updates intended for that operating system. Do not mix packages between Windows generations.

Driver checks: only when the application has a wider hardware problem
A graphics driver, chipset driver, or storage driver is not an established direct fix for msdaprsr.dll. This is a data-access resource, not a device-driver DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDriver troubleshooting becomes relevant only if the same program also crashes with hardware-related errors, fails after a system migration, or has a documented driver prerequisite.
To check a driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or System devices.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a known compatible package from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not uninstall a working driver merely because msdaprsr.dll is missing.
When several devices need checking, manually identifying the correct package can mean hunting through hardware models and driver versions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show outdated drivers; the free scan identifies findings, while driver installation requires the full version. It is optional and is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling an application that specifically owns the failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If SFC repaired the file but the program still will not start
This result usually means the Windows file was not the only problem.
Work through these checks:
- Restart Windows after SFC finishes.
- Launch the affected program from its normal shortcut.
- Confirm whether another program also fails.
- Run the application launcher’s Verify files or Repair function.
- Reinstall the application from its original source if necessary.
- Confirm whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check the application’s documented prerequisites.
- Review antivirus quarantine.
- Look for a second error naming another missing module.
If only one application fails after Windows repair, treat the application installation as the primary suspect. If many programs fail, continue investigating Windows corruption or malware.
Advanced escalation
Use MDAC Component Checker for legacy diagnosis
Microsoft’s MDAC Component Checker can identify installed MDAC versions and diagnose certain MDAC installation problems. It is most useful for older systems and legacy applications, not as a replacement for DISM and SFC on current Windows.
Use it only from Microsoft’s Download Center and follow its documentation. Do not use its findings as a reason to install an arbitrary DLL or an old MDAC redistributable on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Try System Restore
Use System Restore when the error began after a recent software installation, update, cleanup operation, or configuration change and a restore point exists.

Use an in-place Windows repair
If DISM and SFC repeatedly report corruption, Windows Update cannot repair the component store, and several system components remain affected, an in-place repair may be appropriate.

FAQ
Is msdaprsr.dll a Windows file?
It is a Microsoft Data Access Components resource associated with OLE DB Persistence Services. On newer Windows versions, the related data-access components are integrated as WDAC.
Should I download msdaprsr.dll?
No. A downloaded DLL may be malicious, mismatched, incorrectly built, or the wrong architecture. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or the original application installer.
Is this an Office or SQL Server file?
It is not identified as an ordinary Office or game file. It belongs to Microsoft’s data-access component family, which legacy applications can use.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or a graphics-driver reinstall fix it?
There is no established basis for treating those packages as a direct fix for this file. Repair Windows first, then repair the application that reports the error.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does Windows say a module is missing when the DLL is present?
The message can refer to a dependency required by msdaprsr.dll or by the calling application. The named file is not always the only missing component.
Does regsvr32 fix this DLL?
Generally, no. regsvr32 is for DLLs that support registration, while msdaprsr.dll is a resource DLL and is not normally registered manually.
What if the file exists in a temporary folder?
Treat that as suspicious. Verify the digital signature and original path, run a malware scan, and repair the Windows component set rather than trusting the stray copy.
What is the safest first command?
Open an elevated Windows Terminal and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
After it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the affected program again.
