Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, write down:
- Which program shows the error: AutoCAD, an AutoCAD-based application, or an older VBA or Visual Basic tool.
- When it appears: during Windows startup, when launching the program, when opening a drawing, or when running an automation task.
- The exact message: examples include “axauto15.dll is missing,” “The specified module could not be found,” “Error 48: Error in loading DLL,” or “ActiveX component cannot create object.”
- The host architecture: whether the calling application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The installed AutoCAD generation: especially AutoCAD 2000, AutoCAD 2000i, or AutoCAD 2002.

It is not a Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or general-purpose system DLL.
The safest repair is to restore the complete Autodesk installation that needs the file. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL or copying one into System32.

What axauto15.dll is related to
Autodesk’s version-15 automation documentation maps these products to the following ActiveX and ObjectDBX type libraries:
| Product | Automation generation | Related libraries |
|---|---|---|
| AutoCAD 2000 | 15.0 | acax15.tlb, axdb15.tlb |
| AutoCAD 2000i | 15.1 | acax15.tlb, axdb15.tlb |
| AutoCAD 2002 | 15.2 | acax15.tlb, axdb15.tlb |
That does not mean every installation of those products necessarily contains the exact same files or that every installation uses axauto15.dll. It does establish the legacy Autodesk automation family to investigate.
#1 Best Overall
Do not confuse these files:
axauto15.dllaxdb15.dllacax15.tlbaxdb15.tlb
They are related to the same general automation environment but are distinct files. A program reporting one of them cannot be repaired reliably by substituting another.
A message saying “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of axauto15.dll is missing. The named DLL may be present while a required component, registration entry, or compatible host is absent.
Fix 1: Repair the affected Autodesk installation
This is the most likely solution when the error appears while launching AutoCAD or an AutoCAD-based application.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If the installer provides a Repair option
- Close AutoCAD and any related VBA, Visual Basic, or automation program.
- Press Windows key, type Installed apps, and open it.
- Search for AutoCAD or the name of the Autodesk-based application.
- Select the application.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, depending on what Windows displays.
- If an Autodesk maintenance window opens, select Repair.
- Allow the installer to restore missing files and registration data.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same application that originally reported the error.
A successful repair should allow the application to start without the axauto15.dll message. Test the exact task that previously failed, such as opening a drawing or running the automation routine.
If Repair is not available
Use the original installer for the exact product and release.
- Locate the organization’s archived Autodesk installation media or installer.
- If the product is associated with an Autodesk Account, use the account’s official software download area.
- Confirm that the installer matches the application that reported the error.
- Back up custom templates, scripts, profiles, and project files.
- Uninstall the damaged application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as an administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application before restoring optional customizations.
Do not assume that installing a current AutoCAD release will satisfy a program built specifically for the version-15 automation interfaces. Older VBA or Visual Basic applications may reference a particular generation of Autodesk automation libraries.
If the old installer is unavailable, the correct next step is to identify the licensed Autodesk product owner or administrator who maintains the archived installation media. A random DLL download is not an equivalent replacement for the installer.
Fix 2: Confirm that the error belongs to the right file
Legacy Autodesk errors often involve several similarly named components. Confirm the exact filename before attempting registration or replacement.
Check the application message
Read the error carefully and record whether it names:
axauto15.dllaxdb15.dllacax15.tlbaxdb15.tlb
If the message says only “Error 48: Error in loading DLL,” the error does not identify a single missing file. It can result from a missing dependency, an incompatible architecture, bad registration, or a damaged type-library installation.
Check the program’s installation folder
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Inspect the application folder and nearby Autodesk folders.
- Do not copy files from another computer unless both installations are the same licensed product, release, and build.
The absence of axauto15.dll from one folder does not prove that it should be copied there. The exact installation path is not authoritatively established for this filename, so use the installer’s repair process rather than guessing.

Check for side-by-side AutoCAD versions
If more than one AutoCAD release is installed, an older automation program may point to the wrong COM server or type library.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for AutoCAD and Autodesk components.
- Record the installed releases.
- Identify which release the failing program was designed to use.
- Repair that release rather than a newer one.
- If the program is a custom VBA or Visual Basic application, ask its developer which AutoCAD automation version it requires.
Installing a newer AutoCAD release does not automatically update every old automation reference.
Fix 3: Repair COM registration only when the product documents it
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It works only with a self-registering COM server that exposes the required registration entry point. A DLL can be valid and still fail with regsvr32 because it is not self-registering, has missing dependencies, or has the wrong architecture.
Do not assume that this command is correct:
regsvr32 axauto15.dll
There is no verified basis here for claiming that the exact axauto15.dll binary should be registered this way.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAutodesk community guidance for this legacy family discusses registering axdb15.dll, which is a different file. Use that type of command only when the product’s documentation or installer instructions specifically identify the file as a self-registering COM server.
For a documented 32-bit COM server on 64-bit Windows, an elevated Command Prompt may use the 32-bit registration utility:
"%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe" "C:PathToaxdb15.dll"
For a documented 64-bit COM server, the usual utility is:
"%windir%System32regsvr32.exe" "C:PathTocomponent.dll"
These examples do not prove that axauto15.dll should be registered or that either path is appropriate for your installation.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How to run a documented registration command
- Press Windows key.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Enter the exact full-path command supplied by the product documentation.
- Read the result.
- Restart the affected application.
A success message means registration completed for that particular file. It does not prove that the complete Autodesk installation is healthy.
If you see an entry-point error, architecture error, or missing-module message, stop repeating the command. Repair the Autodesk installation and investigate dependencies instead.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The filename alone does not prove whether axauto15.dll is 32-bit or 64-bit. Third-party listings can conflict, and no authoritative binary inspection or Autodesk file manifest establishes that detail here.
However, the architecture of the calling program still matters.

Find the application architecture
Check the application’s documentation or installation directory. You can also:
Rank #3
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Start the affected application.
- Open the Details tab.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform if your Windows version provides it.
- Note whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
A 32-bit client generally needs compatible 32-bit COM components and 32-bit registration data. A 64-bit client generally cannot load a 32-bit in-process DLL directly.
What to do with the result
- If the program is 32-bit, repair or reinstall the matching 32-bit Autodesk components.
- If the program is 64-bit but expects a legacy 32-bit component, contact the application developer or use a supported compatible environment.
- Do not move files between
System32andSysWOW64to experiment. - Do not infer the architecture from a DLL archive listing.
- If a 64-bit Windows installation cannot run the old application, use a supported newer Autodesk release or a legally licensed compatible older Windows environment.
Current Windows support for AutoCAD 2000, 2000i, or 2002 cannot be established from axauto15.dll alone. Installer behavior, licensing, COM architecture, and operating-system compatibility must all be checked.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a file after detecting it as damaged, altered, or suspicious. This is less common than an incomplete legacy installation, but it is worth checking before reinstalling.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the Autodesk installation directory.
- Expand the event and inspect the detected path and publisher.
- Restore the file only if it came from the genuine Autodesk installation and you are confident the detection is incorrect.
- Run the Autodesk repair process afterward.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to install a downloaded copy of axauto15.dll. If the file came from an unknown DLL site, delete it and use the original Autodesk installer instead.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
axauto15.dll is not a protected Windows system file, so System File Checker normally will not restore it. DISM and SFC are secondary checks for broader Windows corruption, not replacements for Autodesk repair.
Microsoft recommends running DISM first and SFC afterward.
- Press Windows key.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Autodesk application again.
If either command reports repairs, retry the application. If both complete without fixing the error, return to the Autodesk installer repair path.

Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; its repair function requires the full version, and reinstalling the Autodesk application remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 7: Check Windows Features only for a documented dependency
Do not enable random Windows Features in response to this filename. No authoritative evidence ties axauto15.dll specifically to a modern Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET package, or optional Windows component.
If the affected application’s own documentation requires a Windows feature:
- Press Windows key.
- Type Windows Features.
- Open Turn Windows features on or off.
- Enable only the feature named by the application’s documentation.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test the application.
Do not treat enabling .NET Framework, legacy components, or another runtime as a confirmed fix for axauto15.dll. A missing runtime dependency should be identified by the application’s installer or a reliable diagnostic, then installed from its official source.
Fix 8: Do not update drivers unless another symptom points to one
A graphics or chipset driver does not normally restore an Autodesk automation DLL. Driver work becomes relevant only if the application also crashes with display errors, fails after a hardware change, or shows a separate device problem.
To check drivers safely:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, System devices, and Other devices.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the General tab and read Device status.
- Open the Driver tab to check the provider and date.
- Use Update driver only when a suitable driver is available from the device or computer manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not install a driver merely because axauto15.dll is missing.
Manually checking each device and hunting compatible versions can be slow, especially when several drivers are stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing the Autodesk application.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading axauto15.dll from an unaffiliated DLL archive can introduce several problems:
- The file may contain malware or have been modified.
- It may belong to a different Autodesk release.
- It may have the wrong architecture.
- Its dependencies may still be missing.
- It may not match the required COM registration.
- Copying it to a system directory can create version conflicts.
- It may hide the real problem, such as a damaged installation or incompatible host.
Do not copy the file into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are not general-purpose storage locations for application DLLs. Restore Autodesk files through the original Autodesk installer or the specific application installer that supplied them.
There is no verified official standalone download page for axauto15.dll, and no authoritative current hash, exact installation path, or supported Windows version has been established for the file.
When the old application still will not run
If repair and reinstall do not help, the software may be too old for the current Windows environment.
Use this escalation order:
- Confirm the exact AutoCAD-based program and release.
- Confirm whether it requires AutoCAD 2000, 2000i, or 2002 automation.
- Check whether its installer and licensing system function on the current Windows version.
- Ask the software owner or developer whether a newer automation library is supported.
- Use a supported Autodesk release if the workflow allows it.
- Use a compatible, legally licensed older Windows environment or virtual machine when required.
- Keep the legacy environment isolated from current work where practical.
System Restore is useful only when the error began after a recent system change and a suitable restore point exists. It is not a replacement for the original Autodesk installer.
Frequently asked questions
Is axauto15.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Autodesk’s legacy AutoCAD automation environment.
Which AutoCAD versions are most relevant?
AutoCAD 2000, AutoCAD 2000i, and AutoCAD 2002 are the relevant version-15 releases. Older VBA, Visual Basic, and automation programs may also depend on those interfaces.
Is axauto15.dll the same as axdb15.dll?
No. They are distinct files. acax15.tlb and axdb15.tlb are also separate type-library files.
Should I register axauto15.dll with regsvr32?
Not automatically. Use regsvr32 only when Autodesk or the application documentation confirms that the exact file is a self-registering COM server. Registration guidance for axdb15.dll does not prove that the same command applies to axauto15.dll.
Will SFC restore axauto15.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while axauto15.dll belongs to third-party Autodesk software. Run DISM and SFC only as secondary Windows-corruption checks.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no verified evidence that one of those packages specifically restores axauto15.dll. Install a runtime only when the affected application’s installer or documentation identifies it as a dependency.
Can Windows 10 or Windows 11 run AutoCAD 2000 or 2002?
Compatibility is not established by the filename. Check the complete application, installer, licensing, architecture, and operating-system requirements. If necessary, use a supported newer release or a compatible licensed older environment.
What if the error says “ActiveX component cannot create object”?
That usually points to a missing, mismatched, or incompatible COM server or registration. Repair the correct Autodesk release and verify that the calling program targets the expected automation version.
What is the safest fix?
Repair or reinstall the exact Autodesk or AutoCAD-based application from its genuine installer. Do not download axauto15.dll separately or copy it into a Windows system folder.
