hpzevw71.dll is an HP printer-driver component, not a general Windows DLL. If Windows says hpzevw71.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the HP printer software that owns it rather than downloading the DLL separately.
The filename is publicly associated with HP Doc Event Dialogs and the legacy prnhp003 HP printer-driver package. An indexed variant is 32-bit, version 0.3.7071.0, and about 0.81 MB, but those details are not universal. Different printer models, Windows versions, and architectures can use different package contents.

What the hpzevw71.dll error means
Typical messages include:
- “The program can’t start because hpzevw71.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting hpzevw71.dll.”
- “Error loading hpzevw71.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because hpzevw71.dll was not found.”
- “hpzevw71.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are Windows loader messages. They identify the file Windows could not load, but they do not prove that the file itself is the only missing item. A dependency of the HP DLL may be absent, the wrong architecture may be installed, or an old HP startup entry may still point to a driver that was removed.
The error commonly appears after:
- Removing or replacing an HP printer
- Updating Windows or an HP driver
- Failed HP printer installation
- Driver cleanup or disk-cleanup software
- Antivirus quarantine
- Removing HP Printer Assistant
- Leaving an obsolete HP component in startup after the printer is gone
hpzevw71.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, or ordinary Windows system DLL. Do not begin by installing those runtimes.

Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the exact HP printer package
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus the download time
This is the most likely solution. It replaces the complete driver package, including dependencies and installation records, instead of patching one missing file.
1. Identify the affected printer
Before uninstalling anything, note the exact HP printer model shown in the error or in Windows.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Review the installed HP printers and record the model name.
- If several HP printers appear, identify which one was recently changed or stopped working.
If no printer remains, continue anyway. A stale HP printer component may still be installed.
2. Uninstall HP software
In Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for
HP. - Open the menu beside HP Printer Assistant, HP Smart-related desktop software, HP driver software, or another HP printer package.
- Select Uninstall and follow the prompts.
In Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the relevant HP printer software.
- Choose Uninstall.
You can also use the older interface:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the HP printer software.
- Choose Uninstall.
Do not remove unrelated HP utilities if you still need them. Concentrate on the printer software connected with the error.
3. Remove the printer
After uninstalling the software:
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Choose Remove or Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
If the printer is listed in Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click it and select Remove device.
If Windows says the printer is busy, cancel pending print jobs first:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open the printer’s queue.
- Select Cancel all.
- Close the queue.
- Try removing the printer again.
4. Restart Windows
Restart before installing the replacement package. This releases driver files that may still be in use and clears pending printer-service operations.
5. Download the correct package from HP
Use HP’s official software and driver page. Search by the printer’s exact model, then select the Windows version and architecture offered for that model.
Prefer the current full-feature driver or HP software package when one is available. If HP provides only a newer HP app or a built-in Windows driver for your model, use the supported option rather than trying to restore the old DLL.

Test the printer by opening Settings > Printers & scanners, selecting it, and printing a test page or document.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the error disappears and printing works, the repair is complete. If the same message returns, continue with the architecture and quarantine checks below. Do not copy a DLL into a Windows folder to supplement the installation.
When manually checking several HP packages and driver versions becomes tedious, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the problem, while the repair or driver installation requires the full version. Reinstalling the exact HP printer package remains the definitive fix for this HP-specific component.
Fix 2: Check whether Windows has the wrong driver architecture
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A publicly indexed hpzevw71.dll variant is 32-bit. That does not mean every HP printer package needs the same file or that a 32-bit file can be placed into a 64-bit driver package.
Check your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type.
You may see:
- 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
- 32-bit operating system
- A different architecture description on some ARM-based systems
Choose the driver offered by HP for that Windows version and printer. Do not select a package only because its filename contains hpzevw71.dll.
A 32-bit DLL cannot substitute for a required 64-bit driver component. Similarly, taking files from one printer model or an old package and placing them into another package can leave the driver with mismatched dependencies.
If the printer is very old, Windows 11 or Windows 10 may use a newer model-specific package, a supported HP app, or a built-in Windows driver instead of the legacy prnhp003 package. The old DLL may not be present on a newly configured system, and that is not automatically a problem.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
If the error appeared immediately after antivirus activity, Windows Security may have quarantined the HP file.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries around the time the DLL disappeared.
- Expand any detection that names the HP printer package or
hpzevw71.dll.
Do not restore the file merely because its name looks familiar. A safe copy means an authentic file delivered through a trustworthy HP or Microsoft-installed driver package, not simply a file with the right filename.
If the detection clearly concerns the original HP package and you trust its source, follow Windows Security’s option to allow or restore it. Then reinstall the complete driver from HP rather than relying on the restored copy.
If the detection is unexplained, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the printer package from HP. Run a full scan:

If malware is suspected or the file keeps returning after removal, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same screen. Save open work first because Windows will restart during the offline scan.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Use these commands when Windows reports broader corruption, HP installation repeatedly fails, or System File Checker identifies damaged protected files. They are not the first repair for an ordinary missing HP driver file.

- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
Do not close the window while DISM is working. A successful result says that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it could not repair the image, restart Windows and try the command again while connected to the internet.
Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
Useful results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files are intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and retry the HP installation.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC.
Restart after both commands, then retry the HP driver installation. DISM and SFC repair Windows components; they do not replace a complete third-party HP printer package.
If you are repeatedly hunting through Windows repairs without knowing which component is stale, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show reported problems; its free scan identifies issues, while the repair requires the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the exact HP software remains the appropriate fix when the missing component belongs to that package.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver replacement, or HP software installation and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the drivers and programs that will be changed.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Select Finish.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents or photographs.
After Windows restarts, test the printer. If the error returns, do not keep restoring repeatedly. Remove the damaged HP package and install the correct current package instead.
Fix 6: Remove an obsolete startup reference
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If the error appears at every login but the printer has been removed, Windows may be trying to start an old HP component.

Do not delete random registry entries or Driver Store folders. If an HP service or scheduled task remains and you cannot identify it confidently, reinstalling the printer package and then removing it through its normal uninstaller is safer than manual deletion.
Fix 7: Check the printer driver in Device Manager
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Device Manager can show whether Windows still has a failed printer-driver installation.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers and Print queues.
- Look for the HP printer, an unknown device, or a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected entry.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General tab for a device-status error.
- Open the Driver tab to review the provider and installed driver details.
If you are removing the old package:
- Right-click the affected printer entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct HP package.
Do not uninstall a device merely because it has an HP name if it is a different working printer or scanner. When in doubt, record the model and driver provider before making changes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 8: Consider Windows’ built-in printer driver
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Some older printers work with a Windows built-in driver instead of the original HP software. This can be appropriate when HP no longer provides a current package for the model.
- Remove the damaged HP software and printer as described earlier.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to detect the printer.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- If Windows cannot find it, select the option to add it manually.
- Choose the connection type and select the matching printer model when offered.
A built-in driver may provide basic printing but not every HP feature, such as scanning controls, status monitoring, or advanced paper settings. If the printer works with the built-in driver, the old hpzevw71.dll error should no longer be relevant to that installation.
Why you should not download or register hpzevw71.dll
Avoid downloading a standalone copy from random DLL websites. The file may be malicious, altered, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or unrelated to the package installed on your computer. Even an authentic copy often will not fix the missing dependency, incorrect driver registration, or stale printer entry that caused the error.
Do not copy hpzevw71.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An application folder
- A manually created Driver Store directory
The correct location depends on the printer package, Windows version, architecture, and installation method. A legacy listing associates related files with a prnhp003 Driver Store path, but that path is package-dependent and should never be created or edited manually.
regsvr32 is also not a routine fix. It applies to DLLs that provide COM self-registration through DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that this HP printer-driver component is meant to be registered that way. Running a command such as this can produce another error without repairing the printer:
regsvr32 hpzevw71.dll
Use the HP installer to place and configure the component.
What is hpzevw71.dll, exactly?
Public metadata describes it as HP Doc Event Dialogs, published by Hewlett-Packard Corporation and associated with HP printer software. Public package listings connect it with prnhp003, a legacy HP printer-driver package used in Windows 7-era systems.

One indexed build is reported as:
- Architecture: 32-bit
- Version:
0.3.7071.0 - Size: approximately 0.81 MB
Another archive reports a different size and hash for a related copy. Therefore, these values identify one publicly indexed variant, not a universal fingerprint for every HP installation.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The file is best treated as an application and printer-driver component. It is not a Windows system requirement for every computer.
FAQ
Is hpzevw71.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot establish whether a copy is safe. An authentic copy installed as part of a trusted HP printer package may be legitimate. A copy found in an unexpected location, changed after antivirus detection, or unrelated to any HP installation deserves investigation and a malware scan.
Is hpzevw71.dll a Windows 7 system file?
It is associated with a legacy HP printer-driver package and has been listed in Windows 7-era Driver Store evidence. That does not make it a universal Windows file. Windows 10 and Windows 11 may use a newer HP package or built-in driver without it.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no verified connection between this file and those runtimes. Installing them automatically is unlikely to repair an incomplete HP printer package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat if I no longer own the HP printer?
Uninstall the obsolete HP printer software, remove the printer, and disable any leftover startup entry. You do not need to restore the DLL merely to satisfy an old HP component you no longer use.
Why does the message say “module could not be found” when the DLL is present?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency of hpzevw71.dll, or it may be loading a package with the wrong architecture. Reinstall the complete matching HP package instead of replacing only the visible file.
Should I use SFC first?
Use SFC and DISM when Windows shows broader corruption or the HP installer repeatedly fails. For a printer-specific error after driver removal or replacement, removing and reinstalling the correct HP package is the better first step.
How do I know which package owns the file?
Start with the exact printer model, installed HP software, recent driver changes, and the Windows architecture shown under Settings > System > About. The prnhp003 association is a useful legacy clue, not a reason to install a package intended for a different printer.
