axdocwiz.dll is missing, axdocwiz.dll was not found, Error loading axdocwiz.dll, and Cannot register axdocwiz.dll are common reported messages. axdocwiz.dll belongs to the Visual Basic 6.0 ActiveX Document Migration Wizard, not to Windows itself.
The 60-second answer
Do not download axdocwiz.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into System32. Restore it from legitimate Visual Basic 6.0 installation media.

The usual repair path is:
- Open the Visual Basic 6.0 or Visual Studio 6.0 maintenance installer.
- Choose Change, Modify, or Repair.
- Reinstall the VB98 Wizards or ActiveX Document Migration Wizard component.
- If the file returns but VB6 still cannot load it, register the restored 32-bit DLL with the correct
regsvr32.exe. - Apply the official Visual Basic 6.0 Service Pack 6 cumulative update if the installation is otherwise intact.
The relevant file should normally be beneath:
VB98WizardsAXDOCWIZ.DLL
A typical modern installation path resembles:
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioVB98Wizardsaxdocwiz.dll
Your installation may use a different root or language folder.
What axdocwiz.dll actually is
axdocwiz.dll is a genuine Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 component named the VB 6 ActiveX Document Migration Wizard. The wizard converts existing Visual Basic forms into ActiveX Documents.

That makes it an old VB6 IDE and migration component, not:
- A Windows system DLL
- A Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX file
- A .NET component
- A normal VB6 application runtime file
- A hardware or graphics driver
It is a 32-bit COM add-in. Microsoft describes VB6 runtime technology as 32-bit software that can run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64, while VB6 development itself is out of support. The wizard may still be needed by an old development machine even though a compiled VB6 application does not normally require it.
Historical VB6 installation records identify the file under VB98Wizards and show it being registered during setup. Individual builds, localized editions, and serviced installations may not have identical metadata, so do not use a particular file size or version as your only test of authenticity.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy the error appears
The cause usually falls into one of these groups:
| Cause | What is happening | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete installation | The wizard was never installed or was removed | Modify or repair VB6 |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed the old binary | Review Protection history and reinstall from trusted media |
| Damaged COM registration | The file exists, but VB6 cannot load its registration data | Use the 32-bit regsvr32.exe |
| Wrong or corrupt copy | The file came from an unrelated folder or unofficial package | Remove the untrusted copy and reinstall VB6 |
| Missing dependency | The wizard or another VB6 component is damaged | Repair VB6, then apply the official service update |
| Windows corruption | Other Windows components are also failing | Run DISM and SFC as secondary checks |
A program that merely runs on the VB6 runtime may never need this wizard. First identify which executable displays the message. If the error appears when opening the VB6 IDE or its ActiveX Document Migration Wizard, repair the development installation. If an unrelated game or utility displays it, that program may have been packaged incorrectly or may be invoking an old VB6 development component unexpectedly.
Fix 1: Repair the Visual Basic 6 installation
This is the most likely and safest fix.
From Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 or Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the entry.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, depending on what Windows displays.
- If the original setup program opens, select the custom or maintenance installation option.
- Select the VB98 Wizards, Wizards, or ActiveX Document Migration Wizard component.
- Continue the installation and provide the original licensed installation media if requested.
- Restart Windows before testing VB6 again.
From Windows 10
- Open Start and type
Control Panel. - Select Programs.
- Open Programs and Features.
- Right-click Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 or Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0.
- Select Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Reinstall the VB98 wizard component.
- Finish setup and restart Windows.
The exact component names vary by edition and installer. If maintenance mode does not offer the wizard, run the original VB6 setup again from genuine installation media and choose a custom installation.
Check the result
After setup finishes, look for axdocwiz.dll inside the VB6 Wizards directory. Start VB6 and open the feature that previously produced the error.
If the file is still absent, the setup source may not contain the required component, the installation may be damaged beyond repair, or the wizard was not selected. Reinstall from complete, legitimate Visual Basic 6.0 media rather than copying a loose DLL from another computer.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Old development binaries can trigger security software, particularly when they came from unofficial VB6 packages or were copied from another machine.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
axdocwiz.dll, the VB6 installation folder, or the Visual Studio installer. - Read the detection details and file location.
- Do not select Restore merely because VB6 requested the filename.
- Run a full security scan.
- If the binary came from legitimate Microsoft installation media, verify that source and reinstall the component through VB6 setup.
- Only allow or restore the file when its provenance is trusted and the detection has been reviewed.
A file found in a download folder, temporary directory, game folder, or unrelated application directory should be treated as untrusted until scanned. The safer solution is to reinstall the wizard from authentic VB6 media instead of allowing an arbitrary copy.
Microsoft documents these quarantine controls in its Windows Security Protection History guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 3: Register the restored 32-bit DLL
Use this step only after restoring a trusted copy to the VB6 Wizards directory. Registration cannot repair a missing, corrupt, wrong-version, or malicious file.
On 64-bit Windows, open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command, changing the path if your installation differs:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioVB98Wizardsaxdocwiz.dll"
On 32-bit Windows, use:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioVB98Wizardsaxdocwiz.dll"
Restart VB6 after registration.
Why SysWOW64 is correct on 64-bit Windows
The directory names are confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains the native 64-bit system tools, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit Windows components. Because axdocwiz.dll is a 32-bit VB6 component, the 32-bit regsvr32.exe in SysWOW64 is the correct registrar.
Do not copy the DLL into either system directory. Keep it beside the other VB6 wizard files.

Interpret registration errors
- The operation succeeded: Restart VB6 and test the wizard.
- The specified module could not be found: The path may be wrong, the file may be missing, or a dependency may be absent.
- The entry point
DllRegisterServerwas not found: The file may be corrupt, the wrong architecture, or not the genuine VB6 component. - A dependent DLL error appears: Repair the VB6 installation instead of downloading individual dependencies.
- Access is denied: Close VB6, reopen Command Prompt as administrator, and repeat the command.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the registration behavior and common error conditions.
Fix 4: Reinstall VB6 and apply the official service update
If repair does not restore the wizard, uninstalling and reinstalling the affected VB6 installation may be necessary.

Before removing it, back up your VB6 projects, source files, custom controls, templates, and any installer media. Then:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select Visual Basic 6.0 or Visual Studio 6.0.
- Choose Uninstall or Change.
- Follow the setup program’s removal instructions.
- Restart Windows.
- Install VB6 again from licensed original media.
- Select the VB98 wizard components during setup.
- Restart after installation.
- Apply Microsoft’s Visual Basic 6.0 Service Pack 6 Cumulative Update, identified as
VB60SP6-KB2708437-x86-ENU.msi. - Test the IDE and register the restored DLL only if the file exists but the wizard still fails.
The Service Pack 6 package is an update, not a replacement for the complete VB6 installation media. It cannot serve as a modern standalone axdocwiz.dll download.
If you no longer have legitimate VB6 media, the practical choices are licensed original media, a known-good system backup, or migrating the old project to a supported development environment.

axdocwiz.dll is not a protected Windows component, so SFC and DISM normally will not recreate it. Use them when other Windows files are also failing, Windows features are damaged, or repair operations report component-store errors.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the VB6 repair or setup program.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows again. If both commands complete successfully but axdocwiz.dll remains missing, that result is expected. Return to the VB6 installer rather than repeating SFC and DISM.
Manually hunting through Windows components while repeating repair commands can be slow and leaves you guessing about what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan that shows what it finds, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling VB6 remains the definitive fix for this application-owned file.
Do not use Device Manager to fix this DLL
Device Manager cannot restore an IDE wizard or repair its COM registration. Updating a graphics, chipset, audio, or storage driver will not normally replace axdocwiz.dll.
Use Device Manager only when you have a separate hardware problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant hardware category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver obtained from the hardware manufacturer.
Do not uninstall random devices because VB6 reports a missing wizard. If you are separately dealing with several stale drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify them, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is not required for repairing axdocwiz.dll.
Is downloading axdocwiz.dll separately safe?
No. A loose DLL from an unknown download site can have the wrong architecture, altered contents, incorrect registration data, or bundled malware. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application’s folder can also hide the real installation problem.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use one of these safer sources instead:
- The original licensed Visual Basic 6.0 installation media
- A trusted system backup containing the complete VB6 installation
- The official Microsoft VB6 service update after the base installation is restored
There is no current official Microsoft standalone axdocwiz.dll download page. The file should be restored as part of the VB6 component that owns it.
If the file exists but VB6 still fails
Check these items in order:
- Confirm the file is inside the VB6
VB98Wizardsdirectory. - Confirm VB6 and the wizard are both 32-bit components.
- Run the architecture-correct elevated
regsvr32command. - Review antivirus Protection history.
- Repair VB6 from its original media.
- If registration reports a dependency error, reinstall the complete wizard component rather than searching for individual DLLs.
- If the error began immediately after an uninstall or cleanup operation, use System Restore by running
rstrui.exeand selecting a restore point from before the change.
A file in an unrelated folder is not proof that VB6 is correctly installed. Location, provenance, architecture, and registration all matter.
FAQ
Does axdocwiz.dll ship with Windows?
No. It belongs to the Visual Basic 6.0 ActiveX Document Migration Wizard and is installed by the VB6 development environment.
Is it needed by every VB6 application?
No. It is primarily an IDE and migration tool. A compiled VB6 application may run without it.
Should I register every DLL that Windows reports as missing?
No. regsvr32 is appropriate here because this particular VB6 component exposes COM registration entry points. It is not a general repair command for ordinary runtime DLLs.
Should I run the 64-bit or 32-bit regsvr32?
Use %windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe on 64-bit Windows because axdocwiz.dll is 32-bit. Use %windir%System32regsvr32.exe on 32-bit Windows.
Why did SFC not restore the file?
Because this is an application-owned VB6 wizard, not a protected Windows system file. Repair the VB6 installation instead.
Is VB6 still supported for development?
Microsoft no longer supports VB6 development as a current platform. Existing applications have limited compatibility support, but developers who still depend on the migration wizard should plan a supported migration path and preserve legitimate installation media.
