AYN began shipping pre-ordered Thor handhelds in mid-October 2025, but the first dispatches covered only the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 models. The Snapdragon 865-powered Thor Lite was excluded from that initial shipment, and AYN had not provided a firm Lite shipping date at the time.
That was a launch-period update, not a statement of universal delivery. As of the latest official store information available in August 2026, AYN is still using batch-based pre-orders, with Batch 7 shipping scheduled to begin in August 2026. Availability can vary by model, color and storage option.

Which AYN Thor models shipped first?
“Only the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 version” is an oversimplification. AYN offered several Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 configurations, while the Thor Lite used the older Snapdragon 865 platform.

The October 15, 2025 shipping report was based on an update attributed to AYN’s official Discord channel and relayed by Notebookcheck. It established that dispatches had started; it did not establish that every qualifying customer had received tracking, that every variant had shipped, or that customers had already received their devices.

Shipping is not the same as delivery
For pre-order hardware, these are separate milestones:
- Production is completed.
- AYN dispatches an order.
- A tracking number is issued.
- The carrier receives the package.
- The customer receives the handheld.
The October 2025 evidence supports the first 8 Gen 2 dispatches, not universal delivery. Buyers should therefore avoid treating “shipping has begun” as “the Thor is available for immediate delivery.” AYN’s store continues to describe the device through pre-order batches, and selected configurations may be marked backordered.
What is the Thor?
The Thor is an Android clamshell handheld built around two displays. AYN lists a 6-inch AMOLED main screen with a 1,920 × 1,080 resolution and refresh rates of up to 120Hz, alongside a 3.92-inch AMOLED lower touchscreen. Launch coverage lists the lower display at 60Hz; the 120Hz specification should not be interpreted as applying to both panels.
Other listed features include:
- Android 13
- 6,000mAh battery
- Hall-effect analogue sticks
- MicroSD card slot
- Headphone jack
The dual-screen layout is the Thor’s main reason to exist. It is particularly relevant to buyers interested in Nintendo DS- and 3DS-style layouts, although buyers must provide and configure their own legally obtained games and software. AYN states that the Thor ships without games preinstalled.
See the official Thor product page for the current specification and variant listings.
Why was the Lite separate?
The Thor Lite is not simply a lower-memory version of the other models. It uses a Snapdragon 865, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while the Base, Pro and Max models use Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with between 8GB and 16GB of RAM.
Launch coverage also identifies platform-level differences:
- The 8 Gen 2 models use LPDDR5X RAM; the Lite is listed with LPDDR4X.
- The 8 Gen 2 models are listed with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3; the Lite is listed with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1.
- External display output is reported as up to 4K60 on the 8 Gen 2 models and 1080p on the Lite.
The evidence does not establish why AYN scheduled the two platforms separately. Component availability, production sequencing and software validation are possible explanations, but none should be presented as confirmed without a direct statement from AYN.
There is also a storage-specification conflict worth noting. Notebookcheck’s launch report described UFS 4.0 storage for the 8 Gen 2 models, while AYN’s current product page lists UFS 3.1 across the displayed Thor variants. UFS 4.0 should therefore not be treated as settled specification; AYN’s current listing is the safer reference.
What is the current Thor ordering status?
As of the latest official store information available in August 2026, AYN is accepting Batch 7 Thor pre-orders and states that shipping is scheduled to begin in August 2026. The product page also shows some model, storage or color combinations as backordered.

That means buyers should check the exact combination selected at checkout. A statement that Thor shipments have begun does not guarantee immediate dispatch for every Max configuration, color or later batch. Lite buyers in particular should not assume that an update concerning an 8 Gen 2 order applies to their Snapdragon 865 unit.
Launch pricing versus current pricing
Launch coverage reported early-bird pricing of $249 for the Thor Lite, $299 for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Base and $429 for the 16GB/1TB Max configuration.
AYN’s official store showed different August 2026 signals: the Thor collection listed the range from $259, while a selected Max 1TB configuration on the product page was shown at $579. Prices depend on the chosen model, storage, color and batch, and may exclude shipping, taxes, customs or import charges. Check the final checkout total rather than comparing headline prices alone.
Current listings are available through AYN’s official collection page and Thor product page.
Which Thor should buyers choose?
Choose the Lite if cost and the form factor come first
The Lite is the lower-cost route into the Thor’s dual-screen design. It makes the most sense for buyers focused on lighter Android gaming and emulation who accept the older Snapdragon 865, older connectivity specifications and possible batch uncertainty.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose an 8 Gen 2 model for more headroom
The 8 Gen 2 models are the better fit for demanding Android games, higher-end emulation and heavier multitasking. They also have the newer wireless and external-display specifications reported at launch. However, the processor—not simply the amount of RAM—is the more important distinction for performance. More RAM should not automatically be treated as a promise of higher frame rates.
Base, Pro or Max?
- Base: The practical value option if 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage are enough.
- Pro: Adds RAM and storage for users who keep more applications and games installed.
- Max 512 or Max 1TB: Best suited to storage-heavy libraries, but compare the premium with buying a lower-capacity model and adding a microSD card.
Do not assume the Max 1TB is the best choice for everyone. Storage capacity does not replace the need to consider price, software compatibility, thermals and the actual games being played.
Is the Thor the right AYN handheld?
The Thor is aimed at buyers who specifically want a dual-screen clamshell. A conventional single-screen handheld may be more sensible for standard Android gaming or general emulation.
AYN’s current collection also lists the Odin 3 from $349 and the Odin2 Portal from $259 at the time of the August 2026 store check. These are not direct replacements for the Thor: they use conventional single-screen designs. They may nevertheless suit buyers who value a simpler layout or a larger standard display more than dual-screen functionality.
Bottom line for Thor customers
The original headline is accurate only when tied to its date. In October 2025, AYN began dispatching Thor pre-orders with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Base, Pro and Max models first, while the Snapdragon 865 Thor Lite was left out of the initial wave. In August 2026, the buying question is different: check the exact model, color, storage capacity and batch, because AYN is still using batch-based pre-orders and selected configurations may be backordered.
