Neither an Azure VM nor a home PC is automatically the cheaper or more reliable way to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7. A home PC may make sense if you already own a suitable computer and have dependable power and upload service. Azure moves the workload off your desk, but you pay for the configured VM and may also pay for disks and outbound data. Compare a region-specific Azure estimate with your home setup’s incremental electricity, equipment, connectivity, and resilience costs.

What changes when you move the stream from a home PC to Azure?
Both options can run an encoder that sends a live feed to YouTube. The difference is where that encoder runs and which costs and failure points you take responsibility for.

How to estimate the real cost of each option
Build the stream profile first
Write down the output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, whether the originating machine must transcode, and continuous runtime. Those settings affect both encoder load and network use. YouTube’s current guidance recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps; treat that as YouTube’s encoder recommendation, not a measurement of your connection or a complete estimate of data-transfer charges. Estimate Azure for the actual configuration
- Choose the intended Azure region, operating system, VM size, and number of instances.
- Set runtime to reflect continuous operation, then include the required disks and storage.
- Estimate outbound transfer from the bitrate and runtime, and check the chosen VM size’s published network performance.
- Enter that configuration in the Azure pricing calculator. Microsoft identifies operating system, size, region, instance count, and runtime as VM estimate factors; disks, storage transactions, and bandwidth can also add costs.
- If you need availability-set redundancy, include more than one VM in the design and estimate. Microsoft’s 99.95% availability guidance refers to two or more VMs in an availability set, not a lone VM. Microsoft availability guidance
Estimate the home setup incrementally
- Measure the PC’s power draw while it is doing the actual encoding workload, or use a manufacturer rating as an estimate. Do not treat an unmeasured generic wattage as your system’s consumption.
- Multiply the energy use over the intended runtime by your local electricity rate.
- Add only costs that change because of the stream: new or replacement equipment, incremental internet charges, backup power, or other resilience measures.
- Check the home upload connection under realistic conditions against the bitrate you plan to send.
There is no universal monthly total for either option: a useful estimate needs your location, stream profile, runtime, equipment, electricity price, internet terms, and uptime target. No general PC power draw or electricity rate can substitute for those inputs.

Configure a continuous YouTube encoder stream
YouTube supports live streams sent by software or standalone hardware encoders, including continuous 24/7 streams. The basic workflow is the same whether the encoder runs on a home PC or an Azure VM: configure the encoder, provide YouTube’s live server URL and stream key, and monitor stream health. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Set up the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options; use settings supported by the encoder and the YouTube live-encoder guidance.
- Set output and rate control. Select the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate your machine and network can sustain. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). For H.264 at 1080p/30 fps, its recommended bitrate is 10 Mbps; check the current table for other profiles. YouTube encoder settings
- Set keyframes. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, with four seconds as the maximum.
- Use encrypted transmission where possible. YouTube specifically recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection to its servers.
- Test before relying on it. Run a test stream, confirm the output looks and sounds right, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate rather than assuming the connection can sustain a target.
- Plan the archive separately from transmission. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24-hour uninterrupted broadcast is longer than that stated automatic-archive duration, so do not assume the entire day-long transmission will be preserved as one automatic archive. Plan for outages and ongoing operation
With a single Azure VM
Remote hosting removes your home PC and home internet from the stream path, but it does not make one VM a highly available design. If continuity requirements justify redundancy, account for the additional VMs and configure the architecture accordingly; the cited 99.95% guidance is for two or more VMs in an availability set. You still need to monitor the encoder and recover if it stops sending.

With a home PC
Keep the computer, router, and network equipment powered and connected for the full runtime. Consider what happens after a power cut, ISP interruption, operating-system restart, encoder crash, or maintenance. A backup-power device or alternate connection may reduce some risks, but adds cost and does not remove every failure mode.
For either setup
- Store the stream key securely and know how to replace it if it is exposed.
- Check YouTube stream health and the encoder’s own status; a running process is not proof that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
- Decide who will notice and respond to a failure, and how quickly the stream must return.
- Test the full workflow, including recovery after an encoder restart or network interruption, before depending on continuous broadcasting.
Copyright and channel-policy checks for a 24/7 feed
A technically healthy stream is not automatically eligible to remain available or to earn revenue. Use only footage, music, and other material you have rights to stream, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel policies for your content. For a long-running channel built from repeated or pre-recorded material, review the current rules rather than assuming that uninterrupted playback establishes originality or monetization eligibility.
