What BABYLON’S FALL actually was
Announced at Square Enix’s E3 showcase in 2018, BABYLON’S FALL was officially described as an action RPG, not a loot-shooter. It launched on PS5 and PS4 on March 3, 2022, and on Steam on March 4, 2022. Players took the role of Sentinels bound to Gideon Coffins and fought through the Tower of Babylon. Its Brushwork Filter aimed for the look of a medieval oil painting; that was the developers’ stated aesthetic goal, not an independent assessment of how well it worked. Why the “ahead of its time” argument is tempting
The most distinctive documented idea was the way combat let players bring four weapons into a fight: two held directly and two wielded through the Gideon Arms. The game offered Standard, Power and Technical attack modes, with weapon types including swords, bows, rods, hammers and shields. In principle, that setup allowed a player to combine close-range and ranged options rather than treating each as a separate loadout.

That makes “loot-driven action RPG” a more accurate shorthand than “loot-shooter”: the official descriptions emphasize a mix of combat styles and gear, not a shooter-first identity. PlatinumGames’ description documents the ingredients, but does not show how well the variety worked in practice.

Its online structure was also mission-based. Players could join a Sentinel Force HQ hub described as supporting up to 16 players, then form parties of up to four for quests. What the evidence does—and doesn’t—show
Those systems make the game interesting to revisit as a design combination: four usable weapons, melee and ranged equipment, gear-based builds, and small-party quests. But those features alone don’t prove that it anticipated later games, influenced them, or was misunderstood at launch. The available sources establish BABYLON’S FALL’s own design, not a fair comparison with specific later titles.

Likewise, the record here does not establish why the game failed commercially. No suitable published performance statistic is available in the cited official sources, so claims about sales, player counts, or a single cause for its fate would go beyond what they show. One reader’s bafflement at the game’s lack of success is an anecdote, not evidence of broad opinion.
Why you can’t play it now
Square Enix announced on September 13, 2022, that it would cancel planned large-scale updates and end the game’s service. Sales of premium currency and digital and physical retail copies were to stop as part of the shutdown. The shutdown took effect on February 27, 2023, at 11:00 p.m. Pacific time. PlatinumGames lists the server closure as February 28, reflecting the date in another time zone; PlayStation’s notice shows the corresponding times across regions. A secondhand PS5 disc is therefore a collector’s item, not a way to play: the physical edition does not restore the ended online service. The current availability, condition and price of used copies are not established by these sources.
