Neither BackerKit nor Kickstarter is the universal best choice for a tabletop RPG. Kickstarter is a large, established campaign platform with an all-or-nothing model and a published US fee schedule. BackerKit offers its own all-or-nothing crowdfunding platform plus a separate pledge manager that can run after a Kickstarter campaign. Your best fit depends on where your audience already responds, your backers’ payment mix and countries, the complexity of your rewards, and how much post-campaign work you need to automate.
First decide what you are choosing
“BackerKit vs. Kickstarter” can describe two different decisions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Where to run the campaign: BackerKit Crowdfunding or Kickstarter.
- How to manage pledges after a campaign: BackerKit’s pledge manager, Kickstarter’s Late Pledges feature, or another workflow.
BackerKit’s crowdfunding service is independent of Kickstarter. BackerKit also lets a creator import a Kickstarter project and use its pledge manager after the campaign. The platform decision and the pledge-management decision can therefore be combined or made separately. BackerKit explains the distinction in Crowdfunding 101 and its FAQ.
A creator with a simple book, a known audience and straightforward shipping may value the reach and familiar checkout of a single campaign platform. A creator selling several books, dice sets, miniatures, digital files, stretch-goal versions and international add-ons may value a dedicated post-campaign system more than a marginal difference in campaign fees.

How the campaign models work
BackerKit Crowdfunding
BackerKit describes its crowdfunding campaigns as all-or-nothing: the project must reach its funding goal for pledges to be collected. Backers are charged after a successful campaign ends. BackerKit’s Crowdfunding 101 page gives a US domestic card-processing example of 2.9% plus $0.30, alongside a 5% platform fee. Processing terms, payout timing and availability can vary, so check the live terms for your country and payment method before setting a goal.
Kickstarter
Kickstarter also uses an all-or-nothing model. Its United States fee page states a 5% platform fee for successful projects and payment processing of between 3% and 5%. The page is US-specific; the applicable rate depends on payment details and geography. Kickstarter also notes a discounted processing fee for pledges under $10, so a campaign with many small pledges should not be modeled as though every transaction has the same cost.
What all-or-nothing changes
With either service, a missed goal generally means the project does not receive the campaign pledges. Set the goal from a production and fulfillment budget, not from an amount that merely sounds achievable. Include manufacturing, editing, art, freight, warehousing, taxes, payment fees, platform fees, contingency and the cost of rewards that are not collected until later.
Fee comparison: use the whole payment path
Comparing only “5% versus 5%” is misleading. The final amount depends on the fee base, payment processing, pledge-manager charges, shipping, taxes, currency conversion and whether customers pay in a later checkout.
| Charge or rule | BackerKit Crowdfunding | Kickstarter (US page) |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign model | All-or-nothing | All-or-nothing |
| Platform fee on a successful campaign | 5%, according to BackerKit’s Crowdfunding 101 page | 5%, according to Kickstarter’s United States fee page |
| Payment processing | BackerKit gives 2.9% + $0.30 as a US domestic card example; actual terms vary | 3%–5% on the US fee page; rates depend on payment details and geography |
| Post-campaign manager for a Kickstarter-origin project | BackerKit says its pledge manager charges a campaign fee plus a 3.5% transaction fee on funds collected there | Kickstarter offers Late Pledges under the conditions in its legal information |
| What can be collected later | Reward selections, addresses, payment information, add-ons, preorders, shipping fees, taxes and upgrades can be handled through the pledge manager | Late Pledges continue only until the creator is first ready to fulfill the offered rewards, according to Kickstarter’s legal information |
For a Kickstarter project imported into BackerKit, the 3.5% transaction fee applies to all funds raised in the pledge manager, including add-ons, preorders, upgrades, shipping fees, taxes and reinstated pledges where applicable. BackerKit says this charge is in addition to a campaign fee; it does not publish one universal total that applies to every project. Confirm the current calculation in the FAQ and your project quotation.
BackerKit’s FAQ says the pledge manager is free to use for campaigns launched on BackerKit, with a 5% transaction fee for charges made there. Because platform pricing changes, treat those published rates as a starting point rather than a permanent contract.

A practical fee estimate
Build a worksheet with separate rows for:
- Gross campaign pledges.
- The campaign platform fee.
- Payment processing, including any per-transaction amount.
- Refunds, failed payments and chargebacks.
- Funds expected after the campaign in a pledge manager.
- Transaction fees on add-ons, preorders, upgrades, shipping and taxes.
- Currency conversion and cross-border payment costs.
- Sales-tax or VAT obligations and the party responsible for remitting them.
- Manufacturing, freight, storage, pick-and-pack and customer-service costs.
Use your expected number of backers and average pledge size when estimating processing, because a fixed charge per transaction has a larger effect on many small pledges than on a few large ones. Model at least three cases: campaign-only pledges, a low post-campaign conversion rate and a high post-campaign conversion rate. Do not count later add-on revenue as guaranteed cash for manufacturing deposits.
BackerKit’s pledge manager after Kickstarter
A pledge manager is not merely a second payment button. It is a structured checkout and data-collection stage between a campaign and fulfillment. BackerKit says its system can collect:
- Backer surveys and reward selections.
- Shipping addresses and payment information.
- Add-on purchases and upgrades.
- Preorders after the campaign.
- Shipping fees and taxes.
That workflow is useful when the final contents of a pledge are not known at campaign close. For example, a backer might choose one of several cover designs, add a dice set, select a regional shipping tier and pay a balance after the creator has confirmed package dimensions. Keeping those choices in one account reduces spreadsheet reconciliation and gives the fulfillment team a more structured export.
Typical Kickstarter-to-BackerKit sequence
- Run and finish the Kickstarter campaign. Keep the reward descriptions and quantities consistent with what you plan to import.
- Import the project. BackerKit’s instructions for importing a Kickstarter project are at What should I know about importing my project to BackerKit? Review the imported tiers, backer records and reward mappings before opening checkout.
- Design the survey. Ask only for information you need to manufacture and ship the order. Separate required address fields from optional demographic or marketing questions.
- Define variants and add-ons. Create unambiguous choices for editions, languages, digital files, bundles and quantities. Test that an add-on cannot be selected without the prerequisite reward when one is required.
- Set shipping and tax rules. Use region-specific rates based on your actual package assumptions. If freight or tax is uncertain, explain when and why the charge may change.
- Open the pledge manager. Tell backers what they must complete, when payment is due and how to request support.
- Reconcile payments and addresses. Export a fulfillment-ready file and check unpaid, incomplete and duplicate records before sending production quantities.
- Close or convert to a preorder store. BackerKit describes preorder functionality for continuing sales after the main pledge period. Keep inventory and delivery estimates synchronized with your actual stock.
BackerKit’s article on preorders and late pledges explains the customer flow. The exact screens and available settings can change, so follow the current creator dashboard instructions rather than an old tutorial.
Kickstarter Late Pledges and their limit
Kickstarter’s Late Pledges feature can accept support after a successful campaign, but it is not an indefinitely open pledge manager. Kickstarter’s legal information says Late Pledges can continue only until the creator is first ready to fulfill the offered rewards. That milestone matters for products with a long manufacturing schedule: closing Late Pledges when fulfillment is ready may leave less time to capture late buyers, while leaving the feature open too long can create inventory and delivery obligations you cannot meet.

If you need only a shipping address and a straightforward reward confirmation, Kickstarter’s native flow may be sufficient. If you need several rounds of variant selection, add-ons, tax and shipping collection, or a continuing preorder storefront, evaluate whether a dedicated pledge manager justifies its additional fee and operational work.

Audience, discovery and performance claims
The official pages available for this comparison do not establish an independent, apples-to-apples measurement of which platform delivers more tabletop RPG backers to a particular creator. Treat audience access as a question about your own mailing list, community, previous launches, advertising and conversion history.
BackerKit’s TTRPG page reports that its tabletop RPG creators raise “2x” more on average than on other platforms, that 50% had their best project ever, and that TTRPG launches grew 12x over three years. The same page also says three of the ten top-crowdfunded TTRPGs of 2025 launched on BackerKit. These are BackerKit’s company-reported marketing figures; the page does not provide an independent comparative methodology. They may describe BackerKit’s observed projects, not the expected result for your campaign.
Use your own evidence instead:
- How many subscribers open a launch email and click through?
- What percentage of your previous audience became backers?
- Do your community members already have accounts and payment methods on a particular platform?
- Can you explain the campaign well enough that new visitors convert without personal recommendations?
- Will your launch date overlap with major releases competing for the same RPG audience?
A platform can expose a project to potential backers, but it cannot replace a launch plan, a clear preview page, a realistic funding goal or regular campaign communication.
Reward complexity and fulfillment fit
Choose a simpler workflow when
- The project has one primary physical reward and perhaps one digital tier.
- Most backers are in a small number of shipping regions.
- You know the final quantities and variants before the campaign ends.
- You can collect addresses and payment through the campaign’s native tools.
Consider a dedicated pledge manager when
- You sell multiple books, accessories, dice, miniatures or digital add-ons.
- Backers must choose among languages, covers, classes, settings or bundle components.
- Shipping and taxes need to be calculated after package details are known.
- You expect meaningful preorder revenue after the campaign.
- Your fulfillment partner needs clean line-item data rather than free-form survey answers.
Neither platform guarantees that a project will ship on time. Production estimates, art and editing schedules, manufacturing capacity, freight costs, customs delays, warehouse space and customer support remain the creator’s responsibility. A pledge manager can organize data and payments; it cannot fix an underfunded budget or an overlarge reward catalog.
Geography, payment mix and taxes
Fee pages are not interchangeable across countries. Kickstarter’s cited 3%–5% processing range is specifically from its United States page. BackerKit’s 2.9% plus $0.30 example is for US domestic cards. Your actual rate can differ for international cards, alternative payment methods, currency conversion and regional regulations.

- Whether creators in your country can launch and receive payouts.
- Which currencies backers can use and which currency you will receive.
- How failed, delayed or disputed payments are handled.
- Whether taxes are collected at checkout or remain your responsibility.
- Whether shipping charges are collected during the campaign or later.
- How refunds affect platform and processing fees.
Do not quote a single net percentage to your audience unless it includes the geographic and payment assumptions behind it. Recheck both services’ live fee and legal pages immediately before launch because rates and policies are volatile.
A decision framework for RPG creators
Step 1: Map the product
List every physical and digital deliverable, version, language, quantity limit, stretch goal and possible add-on. Mark which choices are known on launch day and which will be decided later.
Step 2: Map the money
Separate campaign pledges from later payments. Estimate processing by transaction count, then add platform, pledge-manager, shipping, tax, currency and fulfillment costs. Use conservative conversion assumptions for late buyers.
Step 3: Map your audience
Record where your existing supporters came from and which checkout experience they already understand. Do not treat a platform’s general TTRPG statistics as a forecast for your project.
Step 4: Map the operations
Decide who will answer address corrections, payment failures, customs questions and upgrade requests. Confirm what file format your manufacturer or fulfillment partner needs and whether your chosen system can produce it.

Step 5: Select a campaign and post-campaign combination
Your realistic combinations include:
| Combination | Best suited to | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Kickstarter campaign plus Kickstarter Late Pledges | Creators who want one platform and a relatively simple post-campaign flow | Late Pledges end at the readiness-to-fulfill milestone and may not cover complex variant or add-on requirements |
| Kickstarter campaign plus BackerKit pledge manager | Creators who want Kickstarter’s campaign workflow but need structured surveys, add-ons, taxes, shipping or preorders | BackerKit’s campaign fee and 3.5% transaction fee apply to funds collected in the pledge manager for Kickstarter-origin campaigns |
| BackerKit campaign plus its pledge manager | Creators who prefer BackerKit’s campaign and post-campaign tools in one ecosystem | BackerKit’s published campaign and transaction terms apply; audience fit must be validated for your project |
Step 6: Verify before publishing
- Open the current fee pages for your creator country.
- Ask each platform how refunds, failed payments, taxes and currency conversion are handled for your project.
- Run a test order through every reward, add-on and shipping region.
- Confirm the payout schedule with the payment processor.
- Have your fulfillment partner review the export before launch.
- Publish a clear timetable for surveys, payment collection, manufacturing and shipping.
Common mistakes and how to prevent them
Choosing on headline fee alone
A lower apparent rate can be outweighed by processing, per-transaction charges, pledge-manager fees, taxes or fulfillment labor. Compare the net amount under the same backer count, average pledge, regions and post-campaign sales.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Assuming a pledge manager creates demand
A pledge manager improves collection and organization; it does not guarantee enough backers. Build demand before launch and treat later sales as uncertain until paid.
Opening too many variants
Every cover, language, bundle and accessory adds inventory and customer-service paths. Offer only variants your budget and fulfillment team can track.
Underpricing international shipping
Estimate by destination and package characteristics, then explain what happens if carrier rates change. A pledge manager can collect shipping later, but it cannot make an inaccurate freight estimate profitable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Leaving payment and address work until production
Set survey deadlines, reminders and escalation procedures before the campaign ends. Separate incomplete records from confirmed orders so manufacturing quantities are not inflated.
Bottom line: match the tool to the job
Use Kickstarter when its campaign environment fits your audience and your rewards can be fulfilled with a manageable post-campaign process. Use BackerKit Crowdfunding when its campaign model, pricing and workflow fit your launch plan. Use BackerKit’s pledge manager after Kickstarter when you need structured reward selection, add-ons, shipping, taxes, upgrades or preorders that a basic late-pledge flow cannot comfortably handle. Make the decision with a project-specific fee model and fulfillment plan; the available evidence does not support naming one platform as the universal winner for tabletop RPG crowdfunding.
