What a missing Bluetooth page means
Microsoft states that Windows will not show a Bluetooth settings page when the PC does not support Bluetooth. Therefore, an absent page is not simply a hidden switch. It normally points to one of three conditions: the computer has no Bluetooth hardware, the manufacturer’s physical radio control is off, or Windows cannot use the adapter because of a driver problem.
If you are certain the PC includes Bluetooth but no Bluetooth page appears, check the information supplied with the computer or the manufacturer’s support site. The exact method for turning on the Bluetooth hardware can be model-specific, particularly on laptops with a dedicated wireless key or radio switch.

Fix Bluetooth when the switch or icon is missing
1. Check the laptop’s physical wireless control
Look for a physical wireless or Bluetooth key, slider, or radio switch supplied by the laptop manufacturer. A hardware control can disable the radio before Windows presents any software setting. Turn the control on, then check the Windows 8.1 Bluetooth page again or look for the Bluetooth notification icon on the desktop.

- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Not compatible with all other operation systems e.g. Mac, Linux, Chrome, Unix, Playstation(PS), Windows 7 and below; Disable any built-in Bluetooth of the device before use this product, refer to the user manual for detail
If the computer documentation identifies a special key combination or switch, follow that model-specific instruction. Do not assume that every Windows 8 laptop uses the same control.
2. Confirm that the computer actually has Bluetooth hardware
Some desktop PCs and older laptops were sold without an internal Bluetooth adapter. If neither the Bluetooth page nor a Bluetooth icon appears, verify the original specification, manual, or manufacturer support information. Microsoft’s guidance is explicit: a PC without Bluetooth support will not show the Bluetooth settings page.
This check prevents a common dead end. Windows cannot expose a switch for hardware that the computer does not contain, so software settings alone cannot add built-in Bluetooth.
3. Check the adapter in Device Manager
Device Manager can show whether Windows recognizes a Bluetooth adapter and provides a route for updating its driver.

- What Can I do if the Bluetooth adapter can not work?: Ensure there are no other Bluetooth devices installed on the computer. If there are, disable all existing Bluetooth devices in "Device Manager", then insert the adapter and try again. (For detailed information please read the user manual)
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the Bluetooth category.
- Locate the adapter. Its name commonly includes “Bluetooth” or “Radio.”
- Use Update driver for that adapter.
Microsoft identifies a driver update as a remedy when Bluetooth controls are missing or grayed out. If the Bluetooth category or adapter is not listed, return to the hardware check: the PC may lack an internal adapter, the radio may still be disabled by a physical switch, or Windows may not be detecting the hardware correctly.
4. Undo an Airplane mode side effect
Airplane mode can disable Bluetooth. Microsoft also notes that Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 can leave wireless devices disabled after Airplane mode has been turned off. In that situation, turning Airplane mode off is not enough; re-enable the affected device in the Wireless settings page.
- Open the Charms bar by swiping from the right edge or moving the pointer to the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings, then Change PC settings.
- Open Wireless.
- Select the affected wireless or Bluetooth device to turn it on again.
After re-enabling it, check PC and devices > Bluetooth in Windows 8.1 or revisit the desktop Bluetooth settings route in the original Windows 8 interface.

Choose between built-in Bluetooth and a USB adapter
If the PC has no internal Bluetooth hardware, a USB Bluetooth adapter is the direct hardware fallback. Microsoft support describes adding Bluetooth capability by plugging a USB Bluetooth adapter into a Windows device. Before buying one, verify that its listing or included driver supports Windows 8; support varies between adapters.

| Consideration | Built-in Bluetooth | USB Bluetooth adapter |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware source | Included in the computer by its manufacturer | Added by plugging an adapter into a USB port |
| Windows 8 driver availability | Use the computer manufacturer’s hardware information and driver guidance | Driver support varies; verify Windows 8 compatibility before purchase |
| Installation effort | Usually requires the laptop’s physical radio control or an enabled Windows setting | Requires the adapter, its Windows 8-compatible driver, and an available USB port |
| Bluetooth profile support | Depends on the installed adapter and its supported profiles | Check that the adapter supports the profile required by the device you intend to use |
| Physical switch | The laptop may have a manufacturer-supplied wireless or Bluetooth key or switch | The computer’s existing switch may control the internal radio; the USB adapter still needs its own compatible driver |
A USB adapter is not a replacement for checking Windows 8 driver support. An adapter that works with a newer Windows release may not include a Windows 8 driver, so confirm compatibility before ordering. Also check the Bluetooth profile needed for the device you plan to connect; basic Bluetooth capability does not establish support for every profile.
A practical troubleshooting order
Use the following order to avoid changing several variables at once:
- Identify the Windows edition. Use the PC settings route for Windows 8.1. Use the notification-area Bluetooth route for the original Windows 8 desktop.
- Look for the hardware. Check the laptop’s wireless or Bluetooth key and confirm the PC specification includes Bluetooth.
- Check Device Manager. Expand Bluetooth, identify the adapter, and select Update driver.
- Review Airplane mode recovery. If Airplane mode was recently used, open Wireless in PC settings and turn the affected device on.
- Add hardware if necessary. If the computer has no internal Bluetooth, use a USB Bluetooth adapter whose driver explicitly supports Windows 8.
This sequence separates a missing feature from a disabled feature. If the PC has no adapter, proceed to USB hardware. If an adapter is listed but controls are unavailable, focus on the physical radio switch and driver. If the problem began after Airplane mode, use the Wireless page before replacing hardware.

The Bluetooth control is present but grayed out
Check the physical wireless control, then open Device Manager and update the adapter listed under Bluetooth. A driver problem can leave Bluetooth controls missing or grayed out even when the computer contains the hardware.
The Bluetooth icon is not in the notification area
Do not rely on the icon alone as proof that the PC lacks Bluetooth. Use the Windows 8.1 PC settings path, inspect Device Manager, and verify the manufacturer’s hardware information. The icon route applies only when the original Windows 8 desktop exposes that Bluetooth icon.
Bluetooth stopped working after Airplane mode
Turn Airplane mode off, then open Settings > Change PC settings > Wireless and select the affected device to turn it on again. Windows 8 and 8.1 can leave wireless devices disabled after Airplane mode is disabled.
