Mage has several viable routes, but the available references do not establish one universally strongest build or a reliable win-rate ranking.
What makes Mage different?
Mage centers on books, buffs, and mana. Some items generate mana; staves and other items can spend it, and books often consume mana to activate their effects. Your build therefore has two linked jobs: produce enough mana, then put it to work through items that support one another. See the Mage class reference for the class overview.
Do not treat the inventory as a list of individually powerful items. Mage items can have more complicated adjacency rules than average, so the item’s orientation, the stars it displays, and which neighboring spaces those stars target can determine whether the intended interaction works. Check each tooltip and arrange the bag around the specific item rules rather than assuming that merely placing items nearby is enough.
Choose your starting bag around the fight you want

These are different opening plans, not a ranking. Scholar Bag points toward more immediate mana access; Puzzlebox asks you to build for a longer fight. The Mage reference also notes that Puzzlebag of Love is common among early restocks and may support healing combinations, but the right use depends on the items you actually find.

Build books and spells as an engine
Books can trigger faster when placed near spells, with thematically related spells offering especially relevant synergies. Spells may also combine into other spells; the resulting items still count as spells for Mage books. Most books consume mana, while most spells do not, so a book-and-spell setup still needs a way to fund its mana costs.
Mana, book, and staff direction
Prioritize mana generation, then fit books and spells into positions that satisfy their individual adjacency rules. Add staves or other mana spenders when they support that same engine. Avoid collecting books simply because they are Mage items: if several compete for mana or cannot benefit from the spells you have, the bag may be less coherent than a smaller set of complementary items.

Check spell details before committing
Spell effects, mana costs, and recipe requirements are patch-sensitive. The spell reference lists Mage spells and identifies Spell Scroll: Frostbolt as an exception belonging to Pyromancer rather than Mage. Verify exact effects and recipes in the current item reference or in-game tooltips before planning around a particular spell.
Choose a subclass direction from the items offered
The documented subclass options provide different hooks, not a comparative strength ranking. Treat the subclass choice as a way to reinforce a direction your items can already support.

The class reference describes Harold dealing Magic damage in proportion to Mage healing, with additional scaling from Dark items beneath its brim. It also describes interactions involving buff removal and self-inflicted debuffs. Check current item details before building around a specific interaction.
- Rainbow Potion: A book-collection direction. Its documented hook rewards arranging distinct books in line with the potion, which can encourage a setup involving books, staves, and potions.
- Shiny Mantle (Shiny Chariot), Spirit Bells (Spectromancer), and Water Elemental (Waterbender): These are also listed Mage choices, but the available reference does not provide enough detail to compare their relative strength or give a dependable build recommendation for them. Follow their current in-game descriptions and the synergies offered in your run.
Adapt the build instead of forcing a fixed recipe
Start with the bag and subclass direction you can support, then make each purchase serve the plan. If you find mana generators and compatible books, develop the mana-and-book engine. If your opening centers on Puzzlebox, prioritize enough durability to reach its faster later triggers and use bag purchases to expand around the puzzle pieces you find. If a healing or distinct-book synergy appears, consider the corresponding subclass direction rather than forcing it into a build that lacks its supporting items.
For patch-aware planning, the third-party Backpack Battles planner advertises item and build editing, recipe planning, and shop planning. Its news panel reports Backpack Battles Patch 1.1.9 dated September 15, 2026; treat that as a dated third-party reference, not an official balance authority. The associated item database offers Mage filtering. Use current tooltips to confirm details that may have changed since that listing.
