Its advertised scope is substantial, but the evidence for judging the 2017 remaster is limited: storefront ratings offer changing owner snapshots, while the professional scores available here review the original 2008 game. That distinction matters when deciding whether the HD edition is right for you.
What kind of racing game is Baja: Edge of Control HD?
The HD edition is a 2017 remaster of the 2008 off-road racer. It includes several event formats rather than focusing on a single race style: Hill Climb challenges, head-to-head Open Class races, circuits and Baja endurance events. The official descriptions feature vehicle classes such as Trophy Trucks, 4x4s and buggies, racing across varied terrain.

The scale figures are product specifications in official descriptions, not independent measurements. THQ Nordic’s 2017 announcement advertised more than 100 tracks, nine open worlds and races lasting up to four hours. Current Steam and PlayStation Store descriptions advertise more than 160 vehicles and 200 authentic parts. The publisher’s original announcement used less precise wording for the vehicle and parts counts. Steam, PlayStation Store, THQ Nordic’s 2017 announcement
How do upgrades, damage and long races work?
Vehicle setup and keeping a vehicle running are central to the game’s pitch. The listed parts affect performance, while race support teams help manage damage. Steam’s description calls out blown tires, stressed suspension and overheating engines; truck and helicopter support can help address problems during events. The endurance format can stretch a race to several hours, according to the publisher’s advertised maximum, so this is a different proposition from a game built entirely around short sprints.

What changed in the HD remaster?
THQ Nordic said the remaster improved textures, frame rate, detail, shadows, lighting and dust effects, along with controls and the interface. It also described a more accessible career start. These are publisher claims about changes, not a guarantee of a particular experience on every platform. Official product pages promote resolutions up to 4K, while remaster studio Blitworks lists up to 1080p. The resolution descriptions conflict, so check the specifications for the platform and edition you intend to play rather than assuming every version outputs 4K. THQ Nordic, Blitworks
How many players can play?
The console store listings advertise local split-screen and online multiplayer, but exact player counts differ by platform. PlayStation Store lists one to four local players and 2–16 network players; Xbox Store lists two to four local players and 2–16 online players. Online access requirements can change: the Xbox listing says console online multiplayer requires a Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate subscription, sold separately. Check the current store listing for your region before purchasing or subscribing. PlayStation Store, Xbox Store

What do reviews say about Baja: Edge of Control HD?
At access on October 7, 2026, Steam displayed a Very Positive rating, with 82% positive from 392 reviews. The US PlayStation Store showed an average of 3.81 out of 5 from 1,358 ratings. GameSpot’s professional reviews are for the original 2008 release, not the HD remaster. Its September 25, 2008 review scored the Xbox 360 version 7.5/10 and the PS3 version 6.5/10. The Xbox summary praised a rewarding off-road experience while warning of a steep learning curve; the PS3 summary criticized the visuals. Those scores provide historical context, but they cannot establish how critics received the 2017 remaster. A professional critic consensus specifically for the HD edition is not established here. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Baja: Edge of Control HD worth playing?
It is most appealing if you want off-road events with multiple vehicle types, extensive advertised tuning, a damage-and-support layer, long endurance races or split-screen racing. Its multi-hour race ceiling and broad event scope are also a commitment: players looking mainly for quick, compact races may find the endurance focus less attractive. Store ratings are positive snapshots, but the available professional scores cover the older game, so there is no solid HD-specific critic consensus to use as a verdict. The most reliable basis for deciding is whether the remaster’s off-road formats and long-race structure match what you want to play.
