The best Spectral cards in Balatro are the ones that deliver broad benefits or can decisively improve a build without asking too much in return. A mechanics-based top ten is Black Hole, The Soul, Cryptid, Immolate, Ankh, Hex, Wraith, Trance, Deja Vu, and Ectoplasm. This is a strategic ranking, not an official list or a measured win-rate tier list; the right pick depends on your deck, Jokers, and timing.
How to judge Spectral cards
Spectral cards tend to offer stronger effects than Tarot cards, often balanced by a cost or risk. This ranking weighs three things: how broadly an effect helps, how much it depends on your existing build, and what you must give up to use it. There are 18 Spectral cards in the reference set, so a top ten is a selection—not a claim that the others are useless.
The mechanics below are drawn from third-party references that cite the Balatro wiki, with a second guide-level check from Gameranx. The sources do not identify a current game version, so treat this as a mechanics-based guide rather than a claim of newly tested or official balance.
The 10 best Spectral cards in Balatro
1. Black Hole
Black Hole upgrades every poker hand by one level. That broad effect makes it the most dependable pick on this list: it does not require you to commit to a single hand type or target a particular card. The reference describes it as a rare pack insert that can appear in Celestial or Spectral Packs. Source: Balatro Wiki reference

2. The Soul
The Soul creates a Legendary Joker if you have room. A Legendary can reshape a run, but the result is not automatically useful for every build, and a full Joker lineup leaves no space for it. Its ceiling is enormous; its value depends on capacity and whether the result fits your plan. Source: Balatro Wiki reference Source: Gameranx
3. Cryptid
Cryptid creates two copies of one selected card in your hand. The effect is only as good as its target: duplicating a useful rank or enhanced card can support a clear strategy, while making copies without a plan may do little for the run. Source: Balatro Wiki reference Source: Gameranx

7. Wraith
Wraith creates a random Rare Joker and sets your money to $0. The appeal is the chance to gain a powerful Joker; the price is losing your current cash outright. It is a poor fit when that money is needed for an immediate purchase or other planned spending. Source: Balatro Wiki reference

Choose a card you can realistically keep in hand through the round, not merely one that looks useful at the moment of selection. Source: Balatro Wiki reference
9. Deja Vu
Deja Vu adds a Red Seal to one selected card in your hand. Red Seal retriggers the card once, including held-in-hand effects, so its payoff depends on choosing a card whose effects benefit from another trigger. Source: Balatro Wiki reference Source: Gameranx

10. Ectoplasm
Ectoplasm gives Negative to a random Joker and reduces hand size by one. The hand-size loss can make an already difficult run harder, especially if you use Ectoplasm more than once. The reference reports that this penalty escalates with repeated uses during a run, but because the consulted sources do not establish the game version, check the in-game effect before relying on a specific scaling rule. The other Spectral cards can be worthwhile when their effects match your situation. Aura assigns Foil, Holographic, or Polychrome to one selected card, while Sigil changes the whole hand to one random suit. Familiar, Grim, Incantation, Talisman, and Medium are also outside this editorial top ten; their omission is not a claim that they lack value. Source: Balatro Wiki reference Source: Gameranx
