It contains 20 challenges, unlocked in order: the first five open with the mode, and completing 15 reveals the full set. Each challenge changes the usual run rules, so the best starting point is to identify what it removes—and which scoring, economy, or card tools remain available.
How to unlock Challenge Mode
Win a regular run with five different decks to open Challenge Mode and its first five challenges. Complete challenges in sequence to unlock the next one; after 15 completions, all 20 are available. The progression is described in Balatro HQ’s Challenge Mode guide and cross-checked in Game Design Lab’s challenge reference.

How challenge runs differ from regular runs
A standard Balatro run moves through each Ante’s small blind, big blind, and boss blind, while Jokers can change scoring, card behavior, or shop money, as the official Balatro FAQ explains. Challenge rules can restrict those familiar tools—or alter the economy, information, hand construction, and card durability. The restrictions are the point: plan around the resources that remain instead of assuming a usual build will work.
- Challenges use White Stake and cannot be seeded.
- Challenge rules can impose additional bans and exceptions, so read the challenge’s in-game description before starting.
- Ordinary achievements and unlocks are generally unavailable in challenge runs. Rule Bender and Rule Breaker are the challenge-related exceptions.
- Some statistics, including best hand and highest Ante, may still update.
These progression and mode details are documented by Balatro HQ and the challenge reference. The latter cites game data version 1.0.1o-FULL; for exact ban lists or other fine-grained details, use the current in-client challenge text.

All 20 challenges, in unlock order
The following overview follows the challenge names and order in Balatro HQ’s guide and Game Design Lab’s reference. The descriptions focus on the rule change and a practical priority, rather than attempting to reproduce every ban or exception.
- The Omelette: Normal income is restricted. Prioritize surviving early blinds and making each available source of money count.
- 15 Minute City: The challenge places a premium on speed. Make quick, deliberate decisions rather than spending time chasing a perfect shop or setup.
- Rich Get Richer: The economy is altered. Pay attention to how the challenge’s money rules affect shop decisions and the value of saving.
- Medusa: Hand construction is constrained by its special card rules. Adapt your scoring plan to the cards and effects the challenge makes available.
- 全 or Nothing: This challenge changes how the deck and scoring work. Check its in-game text and build around the permitted scoring tools.
- X-Ray Vision: Cards are face down, limiting information. Avoid plans that rely on knowing every card in advance; keep the run flexible.
- Mad World: The run’s card or scoring rules are altered. Prioritize a hand type that can be supported consistently under the stated restrictions.
- Luxury Tax: Cash comes with a hand-size penalty. Weigh the value of holding money against the cards you lose access to.
- Non-Perishable: Jokers are Eternal. Treat Joker choices as long-term commitments, since a poor fit may remain with you.
- Medieval: The challenge changes the available Joker setup. Inspect the starting conditions and choose a scoring approach that does not depend on a normal Joker pool.
- Plasma Deck: The run uses a distinct scoring setup. Plan for the challenge’s scoring rules rather than assuming ordinary chip and multiplier balance.
- Five-Card Draw: Hand construction is restricted. Favor a plan that works with the challenge’s available cards and draw options.
- Golden Needle: You have one hand per round. Each hand must be chosen carefully; favor reliable scoring over a speculative setup.
- Cruelty: The challenge adds a severe restriction to normal run assumptions. Read the modifier closely and conserve the remaining resources for survival.
- Jokerless: Joker slots are reduced to zero and Joker acquisition paths are blocked. Shift the engine to a hand type strengthened with Planet cards, supported by useful playing-card enhancements and careful timing.
- Typecast: The run changes significantly after the Ante 4 boss. Account for that transition before committing to a build that only works under the initial conditions.
- Regression: The challenge modifies the usual run progression. Focus on a hand plan that remains effective as its specific rules take hold.
- Double or Nothing: The deck uses Red Seals, and cards become permanently debuffed after scoring. Protect the cards your plan depends on and consider the long-term cost before scoring them.
- Fragile: The deck is all Glass, trading high scoring potential for cards that can break. Build around that power while avoiding unnecessary risk to key cards.
- Blitz: This final challenge adds its own restriction to the run. Check the current in-game rules and shape a flexible plan around the remaining scoring and economy options.
Challenge descriptions can change with game updates; the list above is an overview, not a substitute for the live modifier text. The cited reference’s detailed game data is version 1.0.1o-FULL.

How to plan around the restrictions
When the economy is the problem
In a no-income or money-constrained challenge, survival through early blinds takes priority over building an elaborate shop engine. Spend with the restriction in mind, and do not treat normal income assumptions as guaranteed.
When the scoring engine is restricted
Jokerless makes hand levels and playing-card effects more important than Joker synergies. Commit early to a hand type you can support with Planet cards, then prioritize useful card enhancements and avoid spending resources on a plan that depends on acquiring Jokers.

When cards are hidden, fragile, or permanently changed
X-Ray Vision limits information, so favor adaptability over a line that requires perfect knowledge of the deck. In Fragile, Glass cards offer scoring potential but can break; protect the cards that matter. In Double or Nothing, the permanent debuff after scoring means a card’s value must be weighed against its future usefulness before it is played.
When a rule changes mid-run
For Typecast and Double or Nothing, the Ante 4 boss marks a major shift. Check what changes at that point before investing heavily in a build that may stop working. More generally, starter Jokers can signal which plan the challenge supports, but an Eternal Joker deserves extra scrutiny because it cannot be treated like a temporary experiment.
Rank #4
- 150 Jokers, each with their own unique abilities.
- 15 Decks with distinct modifiers to choose from for each run.
- 5 potential variants of each Joker which add further abilities.
- 22 Tarot cards variants that can enhance your regular playing cards.
- 11 Planet cards that help level up your possible poker hands.
These are strategic principles drawn from the documented challenge rules and guide recommendations, not guarantees of a winning run. For close calls, the modifier shown in the current game takes precedence over any third-party summary.
Which challenges are hardest?
There is no single objective ranking in the cited material. Jokerless is widely considered the hardest because it removes Joker slots and blocks Joker acquisition, forcing a different scoring approach. Double or Nothing and Fragile are also severe: the former permanently debuffs scored cards, while the latter makes the entire deck Glass. Which feels hardest depends on the restriction that most disrupts your usual way of building a run.
