The Borderlands 4 gameplay showcase follows Vault Hunters Vex and Rafa through a secret blacksite in Terminus Range, a frozen region of Kairos. It highlights their different abilities, fast movement, weapon and gear systems, and how combat connects to a wider world of activities. The official footage and descriptions explain what the game is designed to offer; they do not establish that a preview writer personally played the build.
What happens in the Terminus Range mission?
In 2K’s gameplay deep dive, Vex the Siren and Rafa the Exo-Soldier fight through a secret blacksite in Terminus Range, a frigid, mountainous part of Kairos. The sequence is a focused combat showcase rather than a tour of the whole game: its clearest purpose is to demonstrate how two Vault Hunters bring different abilities and weapons into the same firefight.
Kairos is under the rule of the Timekeeper, whose forces include synthetic soldiers called the Order. 2K describes four distinct regions and factions resisting that rule. The blacksite mission gives a glimpse of that conflict, but the footage alone does not establish the full scope or quality of the campaign.
How do Vex and Rafa differ?
Vex, the Siren
Vex can empower herself or manifest shades to fight alongside her. The developer-authored PlayStation Blog overview says each Vault Hunter has three signature Action Skills, a Trait, and branching passive paths. Vex’s Trait attunes her Action Skills to the element of her currently equipped weapon, tying her ability choices to the weapon she carries.

Rafa, the Exo-Soldier
Rafa’s exo-suit can digistruct weapons. His showcase emphasizes a different kind of combat flexibility from Vex’s Siren abilities: the suit supplies his firepower, while Vex’s skills involve personal empowerment and summoned shades. The deep dive introduces these as character capabilities, not as a complete account of every skill or build option.
What movement and exploration systems are shown?
The PlayStation Blog lists gliding, dashing, double-jumping, and point-grappling among the movement options. These tools are relevant beyond combat: Kairos is presented as a sprawling, seamlessly connected world, and traversal helps players move between fights and discoverable activities.
A summonable Digirunner provides vehicle travel. Players can also choose whether to follow ECHO-4’s guidance as they explore. Discovering activities such as Silos adds tracked missions; reclaiming a Silo can reveal an approximate Vault Key Fragment location, unlock fast travel, or provide an elevated launch point for gliding. Those rewards link exploration to both navigation and progression rather than making the blacksite fight a standalone experience.
How do weapons and gear customization work?
The deep dive spotlights weapons from eight new and returning manufacturers. It also describes several systems intended to make equipment choices more flexible:

- Licensed Parts: combines behaviors from different manufacturers in a weapon.
- Enhancements: a gear slot for additional customization.
- Ordnance: a shared slot for grenades and heavy weapons that recharges on a cooldown.
- Rep Kits: provide healing or temporary buffs.
These are 2K’s descriptions of intended game systems. The showcase does not independently measure how balanced, varied, or effective each option is in practice.

Can you play solo or in co-op?
2K’s launch notice describes solo play and co-op for up to four players. It says loot is instanced, levels scale dynamically, and players can set difficulty individually. Instanced loot means party members can receive their own drops rather than competing for a single shared item; scaling and individual difficulty are intended to accommodate players at different levels or with different challenge preferences.
The PlayStation Blog also described two-player splitscreen and online drop-in/drop-out play for up to four players. Online play requires an internet connection, cross-play requires a SHiFT account, and console online play requires a separate paid subscription, according to 2K. Platform requirements can change, so check the current terms for the platform you use.
Which platforms and release dates did 2K announce?
2K announced worldwide availability on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The announced Nintendo Switch 2 date was October 3, 2025, in a Take-Two/2K notice. These are the announced release dates; they are not a current check of platform support, storefront availability, price, or inventory.
What this preview does—and does not—establish
The showcase offers a useful look at the game’s intended combat loop: choose a Vault Hunter, combine abilities with weapon and gear options, then use movement and exploration systems to navigate Kairos. Its most concrete details concern the Terminus Range blacksite, Vex and Rafa, and the mechanics 2K and PlayStation describe. Official footage and publisher descriptions are not independent evidence of performance, balance, or overall quality, and they do not support frame-rate, resolution, or platform-ranking claims.
Nor does the word “hands-on” establish that the author played the build. The cited official sources describe gameplay and features; without separate confirmation of a play session, the responsible account is a showcase analysis, not a first-person preview. 2K’s launch notice quotes Gearbox founder and president Randy Pitchford describing the game as putting “the mayhem back into the hands of the fans”; that is promotional language, not an independent finding about the finished game.
