If Balatro crashes, freezes, shows a black screen, or will not launch on PC, start with a restart, updates, and Steam’s file check. These are troubleshooting steps—not guaranteed fixes: Steam’s basic advice is general launch guidance, while the mod and save-related steps apply only to those situations.
Before you start: protect your progress
Do not delete or replace save files as an early fix. A Balatro Steam Community discussion includes individual reports linking a damaged save or cloud state with a launch problem, but that does not establish a universal cause or remedy. If you decide to investigate saves or Steam Cloud, back up your save data first; changing or removing it could cost you a run or progress. Read the Balatro Steam Community discussion.
Try these eight checks in order
1. Restart the PC and Steam
Restart the computer, then open Steam and try Balatro again. Steam’s general launch troubleshooting recommends starting from a fresh restart; this is a basic check, not a Balatro-specific diagnosis. Steam Support’s launch troubleshooting guide.
2. Update Windows

3. Update your graphics drivers
Check for a current driver for your PC’s graphics hardware, install it using the hardware maker’s normal update method, and restart. Steam recommends updating component drivers, but the guidance does not identify a particular Balatro driver issue. Steam Support’s launch troubleshooting guide.
4. Verify Balatro’s Steam files
In Steam, open Library, right-click Balatro, choose Properties, then Installed Files and Verify integrity of game files. Steam Support’s exact instruction is “Verify integrity of game files.” Steam says this can address corrupted extracted game files; let the check finish, then try launching again. 5. Close non-essential apps and overlays temporarily
Quit non-essential background software and temporarily disable overlays for a diagnostic launch attempt. If Balatro then opens, re-enable items one at a time to see whether the problem returns. 6. Check the requirements and Windows support separately
Steam lists Balatro’s Windows minimums as 64-bit Windows 7, 8, 10, or 11; an Intel Core i3; 1 GB RAM; OpenGL 2.1-compatible graphics, including integrated graphics; and 150 MB of storage. These modest listed requirements do not establish that a hardware upgrade is needed. Separately, Steam says its client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024; that client-support notice is not the same as the game’s listed minimum operating systems. 7. If you use mods, test a clean, unmodded launch
Skip this check if your install is unmodded. For a modded copy, temporarily remove or disable mods using the mod manager or installation method you normally use, then try the current Steam version of the game without them. If the crash stops, check the relevant mod developer’s compatibility information and add mods back cautiously. 8. Escalate without risking your save
If the preceding checks do not help, contact the game developer for in-depth support. Note whether the failure happens before the menu or during a run, whether the whole PC also freezes or restarts, whether your install is modded, and which checks you tried. Steam notes that persistent problems can require help from a local PC technician for an individual configuration. Use the symptom to narrow the next step
- Crash or black screen before the menu: work through the restart, update, file-verification, and background-software checks first. These are general Steam launch checks, not a confirmed diagnosis for Balatro.
- Crash during play: note whether it occurs in a modded or unmodded install. If modded, test without mods before changing save data.
- The entire PC locks up or restarts: this is broader than a game-only launch failure. Steam’s guidance allows for configuration-specific technician help if basic checks do not resolve it.
- Possible save or Steam Cloud issue: community discussion contains individual reports, not proof of a standard fix. Back up progress before changing saves or cloud data.
