How do you play Balatro?
Balatro is a roguelike deck-builder in which you play Poker Hands to score enough to beat each round’s blind. As the official FAQ explains, each Ante has a Small Blind, a Big Blind, and a Boss Blind. In a traditional run, Ante 8 ends with a special Boss Blind.

Each blind sets a score target. Your practical goal is not simply to make the strongest conventional poker hand: it is to use the hands, cards, Jokers, and other tools available in your run to reach that target before you run out of chances to play or discard. Boss Blind restrictions can change which hands or strategies are effective, so check the current blind before committing to a plan.
How does scoring work?
A useful beginner’s model is chips × multiplier: chips provide the base, while the multiplier scales that score. A community beginner guide uses this framing to explain why both parts matter (Steam Community guide). It is a starting point, not a full account of every scoring interaction or the exact order in which effects resolve; those details can depend on cards and mechanics not covered by this simple formula.

When choosing an upgrade, ask which part of your scoring plan it improves. If your hands are generating chips but your multiplier is not keeping pace, another chip-focused effect may be less useful than one that strengthens the multiplier. If the reverse is true, look for a way to build a more dependable chip base. Judge the result against the blind’s target rather than treating either stat as valuable in isolation.
How do Jokers work?
Jokers have different effects. The official FAQ gives examples including final-score multipliers, changes to number cards, and extra cash. Read each Joker’s in-game description closely: its wording tells you what role it can play in your current run. The game’s Steam listing emphasizes combining Poker Hands with distinct Jokers to create varied builds.

Think of a Joker as a piece of a plan, not an automatic upgrade. Consider whether it supports the hands you can realistically play, complements the effects you already have, or helps solve a weakness such as limited scoring growth or a need for cash. When choosing what to keep, compare the new Joker’s likely contribution to the role of the one it would replace. The official FAQ recommends understanding Jokers’ unique mechanisms and selecting your available slots carefully.
How do you make a Joker build work?
Start with what the run actually offers, then make your choices reinforce one another. A Joker that would be excellent in a different run may do little for the hands you are playing now. Likewise, an attractive hand strategy can become unreliable if the available cards and effects do not support it.

- Identify your current strength. Notice whether your score is coming more from chips, multiplier growth, or another effect described on your Jokers.
- Fill a gap. Prefer a choice that addresses what is holding the run back over one that repeats a role you already have covered.
- Check the blind. A Boss Blind restriction may make your usual hand choice less practical; adapt the plan to the restriction rather than assuming the same approach will work every round.
- Reassess after a change. A new Joker, card effect, or other run resource can make a previous plan less useful or open a better one.
These are decision principles, not a ranking of specific builds. The available sources establish that Jokers have varied mechanisms and that combining them is central to the game, but do not establish a universal best Joker, hand, or trigger sequence.
How do you get more Jokers?
You can unlock Jokers through the shop during a run or by completing achievements. The official FAQ gives winning without playing a Flush hand as an example of an achievement that unlocks a Joker. Treat unlocks as a reason to experiment across runs, not as a guarantee that a particular Joker will appear in every shop or fit every build.

What should you experiment with between runs?
Balatro includes different decks and a wider set of run resources, including Joker, Tarot, Planet, Spectral, and Voucher cards, according to its Steam product listing. Trying different options can teach you how they change the choices available in a run. Keep the same practical test in mind: does this option help you meet the current blind’s target, and does it work with the rest of your plan?
The Steam listing reports 150 Jokers, 15 decks, 5 potential Joker variants, 22 Tarot card variants, 11 Planet cards, and 32 Vouchers (Steam / Playstack, listing accessed 2026). Where can you play Balatro?
The official FAQ lists Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X|S as non-mobile platforms. That list does not establish current mobile availability, platform parity, or whether every platform has the same version at the same time.
