There is no single best Act 1 chest piece for every character in Baldur’s Gate 3. The strongest all-around defensive options are Adamantine Splint Armour for a proficient heavy-armor wearer and Adamantine Scale Mail for a medium-armor user; Luminous Armour can be better for a character who reliably deals radiant damage. The shortlist below is build-aware, not a definitive ranking, and distinguishes wearable armor from chest-slot clothing.
What is the best armor in Act 1 of BG3?
For a frontliner proficient with heavy armor, Adamantine Splint Armour offers the strongest straightforward defense on this list. Adamantine Scale Mail is the forge’s medium-armor alternative, while Luminous Armour is a standout when the wearer can trigger its radiant-damage effect consistently. Before choosing, check proficiency, Dexterity, stealth needs, and whether the item’s special effect fits the character.
Armor Class (AC) is not the whole comparison. The forge armors also prevent critical hits and reduce damage; Luminous Armour rewards a radiant-damage plan. Conversely, a high-AC heavy or medium piece may be a poor fit for a character who lacks proficiency or needs to avoid stealth disadvantage. The figures below are item properties reported by the cited references; the retrieved material does not establish a specific game patch, so confirm current details in your game.
Ten Act 1 chest-slot picks, matched to a role
This is a practical shortlist, not a source-published ranking. The first seven entries are wearable armor. The last three are clothing that occupies the chest slot and may suit a narrow build, but should not be mistaken for armor mechanically.

Heavy-armor defense: Adamantine Splint Armour and Chain Mail +1
Adamantine Splint Armour is the defensive endpoint for a character who has heavy-armor proficiency and can reach the forge. Its AC 18 is paired with three useful effects: critical hits against the wearer are prevented, incoming damage is reduced by 2, and melee attackers become Reeling. Chain Mail +1 is a more accessible bridge when the character needs heavy armor before completing the forge route; BG3 Guides lists it at AC 17 and names Dammon in the Emerald Grove as a seller.
Medium armor: choose defense, synergy, or access
Adamantine Scale Mail suits a medium-armor wearer who wants the forge’s critical-hit protection and smaller flat damage reduction. Its Dexterity contribution is capped at +2, so a character with more Dexterity does not gain additional AC from that modifier while wearing it. Luminous Armour trades the forge’s damage-reduction package for a radiant-triggered effect, making it attractive when the character’s attacks or spells reliably deal radiant damage.
Githyanki Half Plate gives a similar listed AC formula to Adamantine Scale Mail, but it carries Stealth disadvantage and requires a risky encounter or access to Lae’zel’s gear. Scale Mail +1 is a useful general upgrade when available; the cited early-game guide does not provide a location or exact AC for that entry. Regular Scale Mail is the practical fallback when a medium-armor wearer needs an accessible piece from Dammon.

Chest-slot clothing for specialized builds
Bloodguzzler Garb, Poisoner’s Robe, and The Protecty Sparkswall are included because they can support specific melee, poison, and lightning builds. They are clothing, not interchangeable substitutes for an armor piece’s AC and proficiency benefits. Choose one for its synergy only after weighing what the character gives up in conventional defense.

Both Adamantine Splint Armour and Adamantine Scale Mail are crafted at the Adamantine Forge in Grymforge, rather than bought as finished armor. The forge requires the appropriate mould and mithral ore; the crafts compete for limited materials and mould choices, so decide which character and armor category will benefit most before committing. The BG3 Wiki’s Adamantine set reference describes the crafts, effects, and required moulds.
- Reach Grymforge and locate the Adamantine Forge.
- Obtain a mould for the armor you intend to craft and mithral ore for the forge. The forge’s available crafts compete for those materials.
- Use the forge with the selected mould and ore to make the corresponding armor. Check the current in-game prompts and item description, as the cited sources do not specify a game patch.
Luminous Armour is separate from the forge route. At the Selûnite Outpost, find the hidden-door route to the trapped, locked chest; the BG3 Wiki also notes a jump from the waypoint room as an access route. Its Luminous Armour reference describes the location and radiant trigger.

Is Adamantine Splint better than Adamantine Scale Mail?
Splint is generally the stronger defensive choice for a heavy-armor proficient wearer who values the highest listed base AC and 2-point damage reduction. Scale Mail is the medium-armor choice: it has lower base AC and 1-point reduction, but supports characters whose armor proficiency is medium rather than heavy. Both prevent critical hits and make melee attackers Reeling. Neither is a universal upgrade over the other because proficiency and build eligibility determine who can use each effectively.
| Feature | Adamantine Splint Armour | Adamantine Scale Mail |
|---|---|---|
| Armor category | Heavy armor | Medium armor |
| Listed AC | 18 | 16 + Dexterity modifier, maximum +2 |
| Critical hits against wearer | Prevented | Prevented |
| Incoming damage reduction | 2 | 1 |
| Melee attacker effect | Reeling | Reeling |
| Crafting location | Adamantine Forge, Grymforge | Adamantine Forge, Grymforge |
What is the best medium armor in Act 1?
For broad defense, Adamantine Scale Mail is the strongest medium-armor recommendation here if you can reach Grymforge and have the materials. For radiant builds, Luminous Armour can be better because its effect is activated by radiant damage. If neither is available, Scale Mail +1 is a sensible upgrade when found, while regular Scale Mail is an accessible baseline. Githyanki Half Plate is another option, but its Stealth disadvantage may matter to a party that relies on sneaking.
Quick Recap
How to choose without wasting a forge craft
- Check proficiency first. A character must be proficient with the armor category to use it effectively; do not pick heavy armor for someone who cannot wear it proficiently.
- Compare actual Dexterity contribution. The medium pieces listed cap the Dexterity bonus at +2, so compare the resulting AC for the intended wearer rather than assuming the listed base number is the total.
- Match effects to the plan. Radiant damage supports Luminous Armour’s trigger; melee characters taking repeated hits can benefit from the forge armor effects.
- Account for stealth. Scale Mail and Githyanki Half Plate impose Stealth disadvantage, a real cost for characters expected to scout or sneak.
- Think about route and materials. A +1 piece can cover the early game while the party pursues Grymforge; forge crafts compete for ore and mould choices.
