Which Patch 8 subclass is best? For a typical single-player Baldur’s Gate 3 campaign to level 12, the Circle of Stars Druid is the strongest all-round pick: it can contribute through combat and healing, giving it more ways to matter across encounters. The Hexblade Warlock, Shadow Magic Sorcerer and College of Glamour Bard are close contenders, each with a more specialized edge.

This is an editorial ranking, not a measured power league. Larian announced Patch 8 as the game’s final major patch and added one subclass for each of its 12 classes. The order below weighs versatility, damage and control, party support and survivability, mobility, when the subclass’s identity comes online, and build complexity. It assumes a standard campaign, level cap 12 and ordinary party support—not comprehensive Honour Mode testing. Different builds, equipment and party needs can change the best choice for you.

How to read this ranking

Patch 8 subclasses unlock at different levels, so a strong late-game concept is not automatically the best choice from the start. Cleric, Sorcerer, Paladin and Warlock choose their subclass at level 1; Druid and Wizard at level 2; Barbarian, Bard, Fighter, Monk, Ranger and Rogue at level 3. The official descriptions establish what these subclasses are designed to do, but do not provide a controlled comparison of their performance.

The order favors a distinctive class identity that remains useful across a campaign, rather than a single damage trick or a build that depends on a particular multiclass combination. It is not a universal damage, win-rate or Honour Mode ranking.

The Patch 8 subclasses, ranked

1. Circle of Stars Druid

Best all-rounder. The Circle of Stars gets its starry form at level 2, with combat and healing benefits. That flexibility gives it a clear case for a varied campaign: it can contribute in more than one role rather than asking the player to commit wholly to damage, protection or control. Its early subclass access also means the core identity arrives before most of the level-3 picks.

Choose it if you want a character who can adapt to the party’s immediate needs. It ranks first for breadth, not because a like-for-like test has established that it deals the most damage.

2. Hexblade Warlock

Best weapon-and-curse identity. The Hexblade begins with a bound weapon and curses targets; defeated cursed enemies can rise as Accursed Spectres. That gives the Warlock a direct combat hook from level 1, while the class’s broader spell toolkit provides options beyond weapon attacks.

There is also a notable high-level build route: PC Gamer’s 2026 guide recommends a pure Hexblade 12 build around Shadow Blade and the Resonance Stone. That is one editorial build recommendation, not proof that Hexblade is the strongest subclass for every party, difficulty or equipment setup. Choose it for a focused weapon-using Warlock; do not treat a gear-dependent build as a general performance guarantee.

3. Shadow Magic Sorcerer

Best for mobility and self-preservation. Shadow Magic combines shadow teleportation with a Hound of Ill Omen and a defensive duplicate after being attacked. The mix of movement, control potential and defense gives the Sorcerer more tactical options than a damage-only pitch suggests, and its subclass identity starts at level 1.

It suits players who want spellcasting backed by repositioning and ways to withstand danger. Its place here reflects that package; the available evidence does not compare its output directly with the other eleven additions.

4. College of Glamour Bard

Best party-support and control blend. Mantle of Inspiration protects allies, while the subclass also offers charm effects and Mantle of Majesty’s Command effects to influence enemies. Those features make Glamour valuable for shaping a fight and helping the party, rather than judging it only by direct damage.

The trade-off is timing: Bard chooses its subclass at level 3, and the appeal depends on whether you enjoy supporting allies and controlling foes. It is a strong pick when party impact matters more than a simple personal damage plan.

5. Bladesinging Wizard

Best spell-and-blade hybrid. Bladesinging pairs weapon combat with Wizard spellcasting and builds toward a Bladesong Climax that damages enemies and heals allies. Its defining question is also its main trade-off: how much do you want to balance blade attacks with the breadth of a Wizard’s spells?

Pick it if that hybrid role sounds fun and you are comfortable making tactical choices between the two sides of the kit. Wizards choose their subclass at level 2, so the concept arrives early.

6. Swashbuckler Rogue

Best for mobile close-quarters Rogue play. Fancy Footwork prevents a target attacked in melee from making opportunity attacks against the Rogue for the rest of that turn. Rakish Audacity improves initiative and makes Sneak Attack conditions easier to meet in close combat. Together, these features support a direct, mobile fighting style with control over how the Rogue engages and disengages.

It is a natural choice for someone who wants to be in the melee rather than rely on a more cautious approach. Its class identity begins at level 3.

7. Swarmkeeper Ranger

Best for flavored ranged attacks and utility. Swarmkeeper lets you choose a swarm identity with attack and utility options. The official overview names moths for psychic damage and jellyfish for electrical damage, while the detailed Patch 8 notes also describe teleportation and other swarm utilities. Bees are part of the subclass’s swarm fantasy as well.

The variety makes it more than a damage theme, but the available feature descriptions do not establish a single swarm choice as best in every situation. Choose it for a Ranger with a distinctive companion-like motif and added tactical utility; its subclass arrives at level 3.

8. Path of the Giant Barbarian

Best for throwing and battlefield disruption. Path of the Giant enlarges the Barbarian and emphasizes physical strength, throwing and displacement. Its appeal is concrete: hurl enemies, objects and allies, and use the frontline role to reshape where combatants stand.

It offers an unusually physical kind of control, but its identity is narrower than the top-ranked subclasses’ mix of roles. Choose it if you want a powerful, disruptive Barbarian fantasy; the subclass unlocks at level 3.

9. Oath of the Crown Paladin

Best for protective role-play. Oath of the Crown is framed around order, promises and protecting allies, sometimes at personal cost. That gives it a strong thematic identity and a party-protection case for players who want their Paladin to stand for a particular duty, not just direct offense.

Its ranking reflects the narrower focus of that description, not a judgment that protection is unimportant. Paladins choose their subclass at level 1.

10. Arcane Archer Fighter

Best for magical ranged attacks. Arcane Archer adds magical arrows such as Banishing Arrow and Shadow Arrow, plus Curved Shot to redirect missed attacks. The combination of ranged damage, control and a way to recover some missed attacks gives the subclass a clear, reliable-feeling combat identity.

It ranks below the more flexible picks because its documented strengths center on the ranged-attack role. Choose it if magical archery is the character concept you want; Fighter selects the subclass at level 3.

11. Death Domain Cleric

Best for a death-and-undead theme. The Death Domain focuses on death and damage alongside the Cleric’s broader spell toolkit. One distinctive feature, Bursting Sinew, uses a nearby corpse as an explosive attack. That makes its signature move dependent on the encounter having an appropriate corpse available.

The feature is memorable, but it is a more situational hook than the broad flexibility of the higher-ranked picks. Choose Death Domain for its theme and damage focus, while valuing the Cleric’s wider toolkit as part of the package. Clerics choose their subclass at level 1.

12. Way of the Drunken Master Monk

Best for a specific resource-and-role-play gimmick. The Drunken Master uses alcohol thematically, regains Ki through alcohol and is immune to drunkenness. Sobering Realisation converts that setup into psychic damage. The combination gives the subclass a distinct resource interaction, but it also asks the player to engage with a mechanic that may not suit every campaign or play style.

Pick it if the alcohol theme and Ki interaction are part of the fun for you. Its lower placement reflects a more specialized appeal, not a measured finding that it cannot perform well. Monk chooses its subclass at level 3.

What the ranking can—and cannot—tell you

The available descriptions and build advice support comparisons of feature identity, flexibility and likely party role, not a definitive power order across all twelve subclasses. There is no established comparative statistic here for average damage, win rates or player preference. The ranked order is therefore a practical recommendation for a typical level-12 campaign, not a claim that the first option wins under every build or difficulty.

One useful distinction: a standout multiclass or gear combination is not the same thing as a subclass that is best on its own. PC Gamer’s 2026 Hexblade build advice is a specific pure-class setup; it does not settle how Hexblade compares with the other additions in every configuration. Likewise, a subclass’s value can rise or fall with party composition: protection, healing, control and mobility may solve needs that raw damage does not.

Why Patch 8 matters

Larian Studios’ April 15, 2025 announcement called Patch 8 “Our final major game patch for Baldur’s Gate 3.” The update added twelve subclasses—one for each existing class—along with other features. For this guide, the key consequence is that the twelve listed options are the Patch 8 additions, not a claim that they are the only subclasses in the game.
