For broad combat usefulness, College of Swords is the best all-round pick, followed by Lore, Glamour, and Valour. That is an editorial ranking of feature sets, not a measured power or win-rate result. The best Bard College in Baldur’s Gate 3 depends on whether you want to fight with weapons, broaden your skills and spell options, protect allies, or combine armour with support. You choose a College at level 3; the game currently has four. BG3 Wiki’s Bard reference lists the class and its subclasses.

Which Bard subclass is best in BG3?

Choose College of Swords if you want your Bard to take an active weapon-fighting role. Pick College of Lore for skill breadth, enemy debuffs, and earlier access to spells from outside the Bard list. College of Glamour suits a Bard focused on group protection and control, while College of Valour offers a straightforward armoured support-and-frontline blend.

The ranking below weighs role fit, the impact of features arriving at levels 3 and 6, benefits to allies versus the Bard, and flexibility. Party composition and preferred playstyle can change which College is most useful to you.

  1. College of Swords — strongest fit for direct weapon combat.
  2. College of Lore — strongest fit for skills, reactions, and spell flexibility.
  3. College of Glamour — strongest fit for protecting a group and controlling enemies.
  4. College of Valour — strongest fit for an armoured, ally-supporting frontliner.

1. College of Swords: best for direct combat

Swords is the clearest choice if you want your Bard to do more than cast spells and support from the back. At level 3, the College grants Blade Flourishes, medium armour, scimitar proficiency, and a choice of Fighting Style. Flourishes let you improve your defence, strike up to two enemies, or push yourself toward a target with a teleporting flourish. Extra Attack arrives at level 6. See the BG3 Wiki College of Swords reference for the subclass features.

#1 Best Overall
Baldur's Gate 3 - For Playstation 5 (Japan Import) (Multi Language)
  • Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
  • Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
  • Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
  • Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
  • Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!

Those features give Swords a personal offense and tactical mobility package. Its appeal is less about adding a broad toolkit for the whole party and more about making the Bard a capable weapon user.

2. College of Lore: best for skills and spell flexibility

Lore is the strongest fit if you want your Bard to cover more skills, interfere with enemy rolls, and diversify spells earlier. At level 3, it gains three additional skill proficiencies and Cutting Words, a reaction that can debuff an enemy. In BG3, Cutting Words can reduce saving throws but not damage rolls, so tabletop descriptions that say otherwise do not match this implementation. The BG3 Wiki College of Lore reference describes the subclass features.

At level 6, Lore gains Magical Secrets: two additional spells that are not on the Bard spell list, chosen from BG3’s restricted selection of spells up to level 3. This is an early opportunity to fill a gap in your party’s magic, but it is not an unrestricted choice from every spell in the game. Bards receive another two non-Bard spells at level 10, as described in the BG3 Wiki Magical Secrets reference.

Rank #2
Baldur's Gate 3 Deluxe Edition PC Video Game, Stickers & Soundtrack
  • Immersive RPG Experience: Dive into the highly-anticipated Baldur's Gate 3, a captivating role-playing game set in the iconic Dungeons & Dragons universe.
  • Deluxe Edition: This premium edition includes the base game, exclusive stickers, and an official soundtrack to enhance your adventure.
  • Epic Storytelling: Embark on an epic journey filled with complex narratives, challenging quests, and memorable characters.
  • Tactical Combat: Engage in strategic, turn-based battles that require careful planning and execution of your party's abilities.
  • Customizable Characters: Create and customize your own unique heroes, shaping their appearances, abilities, and personalities to fit your playstyle.

Lore ranks just behind Swords in this broad ranking because its advantages are exceptional for skills, control, and versatility, but it does not give the Bard the same direct weapon-combat package.

3. College of Glamour: best for group protection and control

Glamour is the pick for a Bard who wants to help the party absorb pressure and disrupt attackers. Added in Patch 8, it gains Mantle of Inspiration at level 3. At that level, the feature grants 5 temporary hit points to two allies; an enemy that hits an affected ally with a melee attack can be Charmed. At level 6, the feature reaches three targets and 8 temporary hit points, and the Bard gains Command. At level 10, Mantle reaches four targets and 11 temporary hit points. These subclass figures are listed in the BG3 Wiki College of Glamour reference.

Glamour’s distinctive value is its ally-facing protection paired with a control effect, rather than weapon damage or extra skills. It ranks below Lore here because its strengths are more concentrated in group support and control.

Rank #3
Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition - PlayStation 4
  • Contains Enhanced Editions of Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, & Siege of Dragonspear
  • Baldur's Gate - Since its original release in 1998, Baldur's Gate has set the standard for Dungeons & Dragons computer roleplaying games.
  • Baldur's Gate II - Continue a journey started in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition or create an entirely new character in this isometric Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game.
  • Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear - Adds a new chapter to the Bhaalspawn saga. The events occurring between Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II are at last revealed in this 25-hour adventure.

4. College of Valour: best for an armoured support frontliner

Valour gives a Bard medium armour, shields, and martial weapon proficiency at level 3. Its Combat Inspiration can help an ally with an attack roll, ability check, saving throw, damage, or Armour Class. At level 6, Valour gains Extra Attack. The BG3 Wiki College of Valour reference lists these features.

It is a serviceable hybrid if you want armour, a shield, and ally-facing support while staying close to the action. Its last-place ranking is a comparative editorial judgment: its features are less distinctive than Swords’ combat package or Lore’s skill and spell flexibility. It is not based on a published win-rate comparison.

Lore or Swords Bard: which should you pick?

Choose If you want Defining features
College of Swords Your Bard to fight directly with weapons Blade Flourishes, medium armour, scimitar proficiency, a Fighting Style, and Extra Attack at level 6
College of Lore More skill coverage, enemy debuffs, and earlier spell variety Three additional skill proficiencies and Cutting Words at level 3; two non-Bard spells at level 6, from a restricted list of spells up to level 3

In short, Swords is the more direct combat choice; Lore offers the broader skills-and-spells toolkit. Pick based on what you want your Bard to contribute, rather than treating either as an objective winner.

Why older BG3 Bard guides may list only three Colleges

College of Glamour was added in Patch 8, released on April 15, 2025. The patch added one subclass to each of the game’s 12 classes, which is why guides written before that update may cover only Lore, Swords, and Valour. The BG3 Wiki Patch 8 reference records the release date and additions.

Larian Studios describes Bards as “a versatile class who inspire their party with words or music” in its official Community Update #16: Of Valour and Lore. The ranking here compares subclass features for different playstyles; it is not a developer ranking or a measured combat-performance result.
