You can try to get Raphael’s Helldusk Armour in Act 1 by exploiting his camp appearance: stop his forced conversation, knock him out with nonlethal damage, then loot him before he recovers or leaves. This is a community-documented exploit, not a guaranteed route; its reliability on the current game version has not been confirmed.
Before you try the Act 1 exploit
Raphael normally carries Helldusk Armour in the House of Hope later in the game. The early method instead targets his second Act 1 appearance, at camp, before you progress to the Rosymorn Monastery Trail. It is delicate: the conversation trigger, spell placement and knockout all matter.
The steps below are described in community guides, including a walkthrough published by Charlie INTEL on February 28, 2024. Neither that guide nor the community reference establishes that the exploit works in every mode or current patch.
How to get Raphael’s Helldusk Armour early
- At Raphael’s first encounter, keep a character out of the conversation. Near the broken bridge by the Blighted Village, the Charlie INTEL guide describes separating one party member before the encounter. Switch to that character and attack Raphael at range; he should disappear. See the Charlie INTEL walkthrough.
- Trigger his camp appearance. Approach the Mountain Pass progression area and take a long rest. The community guide places Raphael’s return to camp before progressing to the Rosymorn Monastery Trail. See Early Acquisition of Helldusk Armour.
- Prevent Raphael from starting the forced conversation. The community guide recommends casting Silence so its area covers Raphael but not Scratch, the owlbear cub or other camp companions. If companions are caught in the spell, they can turn hostile. The guide also mentions using the Mysterious Artefact interaction to occupy the dialogue trigger, but reports on that alternative vary; it recommends Silence for Honour Mode.
- Knock Raphael out, then loot him immediately. Enable nonlethal damage and use it for the finishing blow. The guide says ordinary lethal attacks that reduce him to zero are not enough to incapacitate him for looting. Raphael can recover and leave, so take the armour promptly once he is knocked out.
Silence placement and the knockout sequence are detailed in the community guide. A patch note about general NPC knockout reactions does not confirm whether this Raphael-specific exploit works or fails.

- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
Is the Act 1 method reliable?
It is best treated as an optional exploit rather than a dependable progression route. Community pages document the sequence, but no official current-version confirmation is available. Larian’s Patch 6 notes mention a general fix related to NPC knockout reactions; they do not address this exploit specifically.
If you want the armour without relying on an early-game workaround, the documented normal location is Raphael’s House of Hope encounter later in the game. The Act 1 approach trades earlier access for uncertain behavior and a narrow opportunity to prevent dialogue and loot him.
