Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a straightforward, thematic Gale build, keep him as a Wizard and choose Evocation at level 2. It fits his starting class and default subclass, and keeps his role focused on Intelligence-based spellcasting. “Best” depends on your party and preferred playstyle: Evocation is a practical baseline, not a proven winner in every difficulty or matchup.
Why Evocation is the best default for Gale
Gale is already a Wizard when you meet him. His listed starting abilities are Strength 8, Dexterity 13, Constitution 14, Intelligence 15, Wisdom 10, and Charisma 12; Intelligence is his highest score. He defaults to Evocation when he reaches Wizard level 2, so the simplest way to build around his established identity is to stay Wizard and select that subclass. (BG3 Wiki: Gale)
Evocation is a natural fit for a conventional offensive caster: build around Intelligence and use spells to deal damage across single targets or groups, while keeping room for control, defense, and utility. A current guide likewise recommends a pure Evocation Wizard, but that is an editorial recommendation rather than an official ranking or controlled comparison. How to build and play him
Keep the core build focused
- Class: Wizard.
- Subclass: Evocation at Wizard level 2.
- Main ability: Intelligence, which supports a conventional Wizard setup and is Gale’s highest listed starting ability.
This is a baseline, not a restriction. Gale can be respecced, so you can depart from his starting setup if you want a different role. The available sources do not establish a verified level-by-level progression, equipment roadmap, or universal spell list; those choices should follow your party’s needs rather than be presented as a mandatory sequence.

- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
Prepare spells for the situation
Wizard spell preparation is flexible: the Wizard class page describes the number of prepared spells as Wizard level + 8 + Intelligence modifier, with a minimum of one. That lets you adjust the prepared list between situations instead of treating every spell choice as permanent. A practical loadout can cover direct damage, area coverage, control, defense, and utility; emphasize whichever roles your party lacks. (BG3 Wiki: Wizard)
Evocation or Bladesinging?
Patch 8 added Bladesinging as another Wizard subclass option. Larian announced a new Wizard subclass among the patch’s additions; the Patch 8 notes page reports the release date as April 15, 2025, and describes it as the final major patch. This makes Bladesinging a meaningful alternative if you want Gale to play in a more weapon-oriented or hybrid way—not evidence that it outperforms Evocation. No verified head-to-head damage or survivability benchmark establishes a universal winner. (Larian Studios: Community Update 30; BG3 Wiki: Patch 8)

| Choice | Best fit | Build focus |
|---|---|---|
| Evocation | You want Gale to remain a conventional offensive caster and preserve his default subclass identity. | Keep the build centered on Intelligence and spellcasting. |
| Bladesinging | You want Gale to contribute in a more weapon-oriented or hybrid role. | Expect to manage a playstyle that may involve more than one combat priority; the cited sources do not establish a specific stat split or comparative performance result. |
Choose based on party fit: Evocation suits a party that wants spell flexibility and area damage, while Bladesinging is an option if you want Gale to engage more directly with weapons. These are role-based decision points, not claims that either subclass wins in every party. Patch 8 is the version context here; its reported release date and final-major-patch status do not rule out later hotfixes or balance adjustments.

The Gale page describes an optional level 3 spell slot tied to the Shadow Weave consumption option. Treat it as a story-dependent extra, not a standard feature every Gale build receives. The available description does not establish that taking the option is consequence-free, so do not treat it as a required optimization step. (BG3 Wiki: Gale)
