Decide whether to commit to the fight
Arrowhead Design Director Niklas Malmborg describes the Hive Lord as an enemy that appears only sometimes on certain planets, burrows underground, deforms terrain, and roams the map. It is not a forced boss encounter. If the mission objective or squad survival is at risk, leave it alone; killing it is an optional challenge, not a requirement for completing the encounter.

Malmborg also says the creature detects disturbances in the earth and can be baited by explosions and barrages, while noisy combat can draw it toward players. That makes the fight a choice about where to spend the squad’s attention, not a guaranteed arena you can control. Arrowhead’s design discussion describes the Hive Lord as exceptionally powerful and says taking it on is no easy task.
Prepare the squad for sustained damage
There is no authoritative current comparison of individual weapons or loadouts, so no single weapon can be called mathematically best. Community guidance points toward concentrating anti-tank firepower, but the practical goal is to deliver damage during safe opportunities and keep pressure on when the creature moves or submerges.

- Agree on who is bringing anti-tank weapons and stratagems before the fight begins.
- Favor options that let the team keep dealing damage across multiple exposure windows rather than relying on one dramatic strike.
- Consider ammunition, cooldowns, and the risk of staying close when choosing who fires and from where.
- Clear or control nearby Terminids so they do not turn a difficult target into a broader survival problem.
These are tactical criteria, not official weapon statistics or a tested loadout ranking. The available official material does not provide current Hive Lord health, weapon damage, or time-to-kill figures.
Use disturbances to influence its movement
Explosions and barrages can bait the Hive Lord by disturbing the ground, according to Malmborg. Use that behavior to influence its movement and create opportunities for the squad to engage, but do not treat it as a guaranteed spawn, lure, or kill trick. If the creature disappears underground or shifts position, stay coordinated and be ready to re-engage when it surfaces.

Concentrate fire when it is exposed, then make room
When the Hive Lord is visible, focus the squad’s fire rather than scattering damage across unrelated targets. Keep teammates spread enough to react to its large attacks and avoid clustering around its path. Arrowhead increased durable damage on many Hive Lord physical attacks in the April 28, 2026 update, making close positioning more costly than before. The community wiki describes a possible bile-spew window as an opportunity to use a Hellbomb, but this is secondary guidance—not an assured opening or one-shot method. Do not build the plan around a single stratagem killing the target.

Adjust the plan for Hive World caves
Official update material describes Hive World cave systems and notes that holes in cave roofs allow stratagems to be called down. It also recommends bringing a flashlight for cave exploration. If you encounter the Hive Lord in this setting, account for the terrain when positioning and calling support rather than assuming every cave ceiling blocks stratagems. The Helldivers Wiki.gg community wiki reports 150,000 main health and recommends bringing as much anti-tank firepower as possible.
