For a straightforward Shadow Magic Sorcerer build in Baldur’s Gate 3, stay single-class through level 12. Prioritize Charisma for spellcasting, with Constitution for concentration and durability and Dexterity for defense and initiative. This route reaches the subclass’s key features—including its level 11 Shadow Walk—without delaying Sorcerer spell progression. It is a feature-focused recommendation, not a proven best-in-game build.
Why choose Shadow Magic Sorcerer?
Shadow Magic is an official Sorcerer subclass added in Patch 8, not a mod. Larian describes it as drawing power from the Shadowfell, and highlights its shadow teleportation and Hound of Ill Omen. Larian’s Community Update #34 introduces the subclass; the BG3 Wiki’s Shadow Magic page details its in-game features.
The subclass suits a controller and adaptable spellcaster. Its toolkit combines darkvision and a chance to survive a hit that would otherwise drop you, a Darkness option, a summoned Hound, and late-game shadow movement. Sorcerer Metamagic adds ways to adapt spells, but the sources do not establish one mandatory or optimal spell-and-Metamagic combination.
Recommended build: single-class Sorcerer to level 12
Ability priorities
- Charisma: Make this your priority because it powers Sorcerer spellcasting.
- Constitution: Keep it valuable for concentration and durability.
- Dexterity: It supports defense and initiative.
The feature-focused recommendation is to take Shadow Magic Sorcerer all the way to level 12. The cited sources do not establish exact ability scores, a particular spell list, or a mathematically optimal Metamagic pairing, so treat those choices as adaptable to your party and preferred role.

Feature progression
| Sorcerer level | Feature | What it means in play |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Eyes of the Dark; Strength of the Grave | Gain darkvision out to 24 m (80 ft). After reaching 0 hit points, Strength of the Grave lets you regain 1 hit point instead of becoming downed. |
| 3 | Darkness; Eyes of the Dark option | Gain the Darkness spell and an Eyes of the Dark version that costs 2 Sorcery Points. The stated effect heavily obscures and blinds creatures inside; creatures cannot make ranged attacks into or out of the area. |
| 6 | Hound of Ill Omen | Use a bonus action and 3 Sorcery Points to summon a creature of darkness. The feature recharges on a short rest, according to the BG3 Wiki. |
| 11 | Shadow Walk | Teleport into shadows as a bonus action. The next spell you cast that turn benefits from Distant Spell without spending Sorcery Points. |
Do not assume Darkness means you automatically see through every kind or source of magical darkness; the cited feature description supports the effects listed above, not a universal exception.
Choosing spells and Metamagic
Build around the role you want the character to play: the subclass supports control and repositioning, while Sorcerer spells and Metamagic let you tailor your approach. The BG3 Sorcerer rules include Quickened Spell at a cost of 3 Sorcery Points, and Heightened Spell affects all targets of the spell, according to the BG3 Wiki’s D&D 5e class changes. Those mechanics can inform your control choices, but they do not prove a single best spell list or Metamagic setup.

Keep resource costs in mind when planning a turn. The Hound takes both a bonus action and 3 Sorcery Points, while the subclass’s Eyes of the Dark Darkness option costs 2 Sorcery Points. Consider whether the summon or a spell-enhancing Metamagic use better serves the encounter before spending those resources.

Multiclassing is an option in Baldur’s Gate 3, but no cited source establishes a particular split as stronger for Shadow Magic Sorcerer. Each level taken elsewhere delays or gives up Sorcerer features and progression. For a general-purpose build centered on this subclass, staying Sorcerer through level 12 is the clearest recommendation: it reaches the Hound at level 6 and Shadow Walk at level 11 while retaining Sorcerer progression.

- Build and command your optimal team to take down otherworldly Shadows and climb closer to the truth.
If you are considering a split, judge it by the specific trade-off rather than by its popularity in community builds:
- When will the character receive Hound of Ill Omen and Shadow Walk?
- Which Sorcerer spell and Metamagic progression will the split delay or sacrifice?
- What concrete benefit does the added class provide for your intended party role?
Community build discussions, such as this Shadow Sorcerer build guide on r/BG3Builds, show that players explore alternatives; they are anecdotal, not controlled comparisons. A broader PC Gamer guide to Baldur’s Gate 3 multiclass builds is useful context, but it does not establish a best split for this subclass.
