For a straightforward, story-faithful Wyll build, keep him as a Fiend Warlock and choose Pact of the Blade at Warlock level 3. Prioritize Charisma, use a pact weapon when he can safely fight in melee, and rely on Eldritch Blast when distance or danger makes that the better choice. This is a practical recommendation—not a universally optimal build for every difficulty or playstyle.
Why Fiend and Pact of the Blade fit Wyll
Wyll is a human Fiend Warlock whose identity as the Blade of Frontiers—and whose pact with Mizora—is central to his character. The Fiend subclass preserves that default story connection, while Pact of the Blade gives him a credible melee role. As Wyll puts it, “The frontiers demanded a blade. And so I heeded.” Wyll’s character reference describes his background and companion context.
Mechanically, Blade pact lets Wyll summon or bind a pact weapon and use his spellcasting modifier instead of Strength or Dexterity for its attacks. That makes Charisma useful both for his Warlock spellcasting and his pact-weapon attacks. At Warlock level 5, Pact of the Blade grants Extra Attack. The Warlock mechanics reference covers Pact Boons, Pact Magic, and class progression.
How to build Wyll
Choose Fiend, then take Pact of the Blade
Keep Wyll’s Fiend subclass if you want to preserve his default patron and story identity. At Warlock level 3, choose Pact of the Blade. This pairs his Blade of Frontiers theme with the pact’s Charisma-based weapon attacks. Fiend is also described as a beginner-friendly choice in community build guidance, but that is advice rather than an official ranking.

Prioritize Charisma, Constitution, and Dexterity
Make Charisma Wyll’s primary ability: it supports his Warlock spells and, with a pact weapon, his weapon attacks. Keep enough Constitution to help him survive and maintain concentration, and enough Dexterity for defense and initiative. There is no single point-buy spread established here as best for every difficulty, so adjust to your party and preferred challenge.
Reach Warlock level 5 for Extra Attack
If you want Wyll to function as a spellsword, Warlock level 5 is an important milestone: it provides Pact of the Blade’s Extra Attack. Multiclassing changes how quickly he reaches that feature and gives up some Warlock progression; no one split is established as optimal across difficulties. Staying in Warlock is the simplest way to get the pact’s core weapon progression without adding another class’s choices.

How to use Wyll in combat
- Use the pact weapon when melee is safe. Wyll’s weapon attacks draw on his Charisma through Pact of the Blade, and Extra Attack improves his weapon-focused turn once he reaches Warlock level 5.
- Use Eldritch Blast at range. It lets him contribute when closing in would expose him to unnecessary danger or when a target is better handled from a distance.
- Spend pact slots deliberately. Warlock pact slots cast spells at the highest level available to the Warlock and recharge on a Short Rest. Use them for encounters where a control or burst spell can make a meaningful difference, and consider your party’s Short Rest cadence when planning resources. Details are in the Warlock reference.
When to choose a different Wyll build
| Build direction | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fiend / Pact of the Blade | A story-faithful spellsword who mixes pact-weapon attacks with Warlock spells. | Requires Wyll to reach Warlock level 5 for Pact of the Blade’s Extra Attack. |
| Hexblade | Players who want to explore the subclass added in Patch 8 rather than preserve Wyll’s default Fiend identity. | It is a different story and mechanics choice, not a universally superior build. A creator’s Patch 8 Honour Mode guide recommends a Hexblade setup, but that remains a specific build recommendation. |
| Ranged Warlock | Players who value safer positioning and spell attacks over Wyll’s melee roleplay. | It shifts emphasis away from the Blade of Frontiers weapon focus; no single optimized spell list is established here. |
Patch 8 added Hexblade to the available Warlock subclass options. Its Patch 8 reference also documents Shadow Blade, a Warlock spell that deals psychic damage and grants advantage on attack rolls against targets in dim light or darkness. Shadow Blade is an optional direction, not a requirement for the Fiend/Blade recommendation. Check your installed game version before relying on patch-specific options. The Patch 8 reference describes these additions and identifies Patch 8 as the final major game patch.
