Larian fixed the Chest of the Mundane’s weight-changing behavior in Baldur’s Gate 3’s Patch 1 because it was a bug, not an intended inventory feature. Some players had still found the old behavior useful as a makeshift, bag-of-holding-like convenience, which helps explain the disappointment. Patch 7 later fixed a separate crash involving the chest’s Take All option.
What did Patch 1 change about the Chest of the Mundane?
Larian’s Patch 1 notes explicitly call the weight behavior a bug: “Fixed a bug where adding items to the Chest of the Mundane changed the weight of an item.” The same notes say Larian “Fixed an issue where the Chest of the Mundane stopped functioning as intended once you arrived in Wyrm’s Crossing.”
These are two distinct corrections: one addressed item weight when items were added, and the other addressed the chest no longer functioning as intended after reaching Wyrm’s Crossing. The notes do not explain how the behavior was implemented or spell out every item or save-state edge case.
Why were some players disappointed?
Although Larian classified the weight change as a bug, players could experience the previous behavior as a handy inventory shortcut. In a Reddit discussion titled “Chest of the Mundane… ‘fixed’,” one commenter lamented that the fix removed “useful player quality of life mechanics” and described the old chest as an “alternative to a bag of holding.” That is one player’s reaction, not evidence that the whole community objected or that Larian had promised the behavior as a feature.

The distinction is simple: the old behavior could be useful to players, but Larian’s Patch 1 notes say it was unintended. The available discussion illustrates disappointment; it does not establish how widespread or how lasting that reaction was. Read the Reddit discussion.
Did Patch 7 fix the same glitch?
No. Larian’s Patch 7 notes list a separate chest-related fix: “Fixed a crash when choosing to ‘Take All’ from the Chest of the Mundane.” That addresses a crash triggered by a particular action, not the item-weight behavior or the Wyrm’s Crossing issue described in Patch 1.

Can you still use the Chest of the Mundane?
The patch notes establish that Larian corrected the weight behavior and the chest’s intended functioning at Wyrm’s Crossing; they do not describe the chest as removed from the game. They also do not provide a complete current-use guide or cover every version and save-state scenario. Larian calls Patch 8 its final major update, but its news index also lists later hotfix announcements, so “final major update” does not mean the game received no updates afterward.
