In Baldur’s Gate 3, the most useful combat habit is to treat every turn as a limited budget: check what each action costs, use the combat log to diagnose misses, and make terrain and enemy timing part of the plan. There is no single tactic that works in every fight; the best choice depends on its chance of success, the resources it consumes, and what it prevents the enemy from doing.
Plan a turn around its costs, not just its attacks
A character’s turn can involve an Action, a Bonus Action, movement, and sometimes a Reaction. These are distinct resources, and an ability’s cost is not always obvious from its animation or category. Check the ability tooltip and the resource icons before committing.
Before ending a turn, ask whether movement could improve reach or line of sight, and whether a remaining Bonus Action could still help. Depending on the character and situation, options such as jumping, shoving, drinking a potion, making an off-hand attack, or using a class ability may compete for different resources. Confirm the cost in the current game UI rather than assuming.
Reactions can trigger outside the character’s turn. Review reaction settings so that an important limited reaction can be confirmed when appropriate instead of being spent automatically in a situation you did not intend.

- Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
Find out why an attack missed
Do not repeat the same attack without checking the combat log. It shows the roll and its modifiers, including whether advantage or disadvantage affected the result. Advantage rolls two d20s and uses the higher result; disadvantage rolls two and uses the lower.
A miss can have causes beyond bad luck or disadvantage. Possible factors include being outside effective range, attacking from low ground with a ranged weapon, a relevant condition, lacking proficiency, or the target’s high Armor Class. The combat log helps distinguish among them.
If a target is hard to hit with an attack roll, consider whether an ability that calls for a saving throw or applies control better suits the situation. That is not a guaranteed workaround: the target’s defenses, the ability’s chance of success, and its resource cost still matter.
Use exploration time to prepare for initiative
You can switch to forced turn-based mode while exploring. Larian describes it as a way to control timing for movement, stealth, and other actions before initiative begins. Use that control to scout, adjust light, and position the party when the situation allows.

Light and darkness affect detection, and darkvision changes how obscured areas work. Think about sight lines and who should approach first rather than moving the whole party into an unknown space at once. Stealth can help position characters before combat, but do not assume every encounter will produce a surprise round.
Make elevation, cover, and hazards part of the plan
Terrain is a combat resource, not decoration. Larian highlights verticality and environmental interactions as part of the game’s combat design. Before spending an action, check whether a character can reach a better firing or spellcasting position, whether a doorway or chokepoint helps protect allies, and whether a hazard changes the risk of approaching an enemy.
A shove can remove a threat from the fight, but pushing an enemy into a hazard may also cost you access to useful loot. Weigh the immediate benefit against what you give up. Exact outcomes and modifiers depend on the situation, so check the current UI and combat log rather than relying on a remembered rule.
Prioritize the enemy whose next turn matters most
Instead of spreading damage automatically, consider who is likely to act soon and what that enemy could do. A control effect that prevents a dangerous action may be worth more than additional damage—but only if it has a reasonable chance to land and its cost makes sense for the threat.

- Fully immerse yourself in an emotional, gripping journey with new scenes and character interactions, additional voiceover, and a reloaded soundtrack.
- Choose how to meaningfully spend each day through various activities from exploring the Port Island to forging genuine bonds with beloved characters.
- Build and command your optimal team to take down otherworldly Shadows and climb closer to the truth.
Compare your options against the immediate danger:
- Direct damage: useful when it can reliably remove or weaken a threat, but it may leave that enemy free to act if it survives.
- Control: can prevent or delay enemy actions, but depends on the effect succeeding and may consume a valuable resource.
- Movement or positioning: can improve attacks or reduce exposure, but may use movement or another resource and can leave allies vulnerable if they move too far.
- Stealth setup: can create a better opening when the encounter allows it, but depends on detection, timing, and the environment.
- Environmental tactics: can exploit hazards or chokepoints, but require suitable terrain and may carry risks such as losing access to loot.
Judge each choice by its action cost, likelihood of success, effect on enemy actions, risk to the party, and any spell slots or consumables it uses. Class, party composition, difficulty, and encounter layout all change the trade-off.

- Check the Action and Bonus Action icons, ability tooltips, and any relevant Reaction settings.
- Read the combat log after a miss; identify the roll modifiers before choosing another attack.
- Look for a better position, sight line, chokepoint, hazard, or opportunity to control the enemy.
- Ask which enemy action you most need to prevent, and compare the cost and chance of each available response.
- Keep enough awareness of party exposure and remaining resources to avoid solving one problem by creating a worse one.
Larian’s official game overview describes combat as turn-based, with team-based initiative, advantage and disadvantage, roll modifiers, and environmental interactions. Its article “A Little About Combat & Stealth,” published August 7, 2020, discusses stealth and timing before the game’s final release, so use it for design context; for present-day mechanical specifics, rely on the tooltips and combat log in your game. The secondary BG3 Guides combat page was updated June 28, 2026, while Shacknews’s guide dates to August 9, 2023, so interface details may differ by version.
