Baldur’s Gate 3 Console Mods: New Subclasses, QoL Improvements, and Surprises

Baldur’s Gate 3’s Patch 8 subclasses are built-in content, while console mods are curated community downloads with platform, compatibility and multiplayer rules.

PS5 and Xbox players can install selected community mods through Baldur’s Gate 3’s official in-game mod browser, but the catalog is curated and is not the same as PC’s. One important distinction: Patch 8’s 12 new subclasses are built-in game content, not downloadable mods. Community subclass mods are separate additions, and their console availability depends on curation.

Are the new subclasses mods?

No. Patch 8 added one official subclass for each of Baldur’s Gate 3’s 12 classes. They are part of the game update and do not need to be found or installed in the mod browser. Larian described Patch 8 as its last major patch. Larian’s Xbox Wire overview highlighted examples such as the Path of the Giants Barbarian, College of Glamour Bard, Death Domain Cleric, Circle of the Stars Druid and Arcane Archer Fighter.

The complete Patch 8 set is:

  • Barbarian: Path of the Giants
  • Bard: College of Glamour
  • Cleric: Death Domain
  • Druid: Circle of the Stars
  • Fighter: Arcane Archer
  • Monk: Way of the Drunken Master
  • Paladin: Oath of the Crown
  • Ranger: Swarmkeeper
  • Rogue: Swashbuckler
  • Sorcerer: Shadow Magic
  • Warlock: Hexblade
  • Wizard: Bladesinging

These official subclasses are distinct from community-made subclass mods, which are optional downloads and may have different eligibility or compatibility.

What can console mods add?

Console-curated mods can change gameplay, add character options, adjust convenience features, or customize visuals. Larian’s October 2024 overview named several examples; these illustrate the kinds of changes available, not a guarantee that each remains in the live catalog.

#1 Best Overall
Baldur's Gate 3 - For Playstation 5 (Japan Import) (Multi Language)
  • Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
  • Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
  • Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
  • Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
  • Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
Example What it changes Why a player might look for it
Paladins Have Gods Adds deity-related options and dialogue. Role-playing and character identity.
Path of Nightmares Adds Dark Urge dice visuals. Visual customization.
Adjustable Party Limit The 2024 overview described a party of up to 16 adventurers. Party-size convenience; this can substantially change the game’s balance and feel.
The Celestial Warlock Subclass Offers an alternate Warlock subclass concept. Different class flavor and character builds.
UnlockLevelCurve – Level 13–20 Extends progression beyond the game’s usual level range. More progression for players who want to continue developing characters.

For current availability, search by name in the in-game browser rather than relying on an older list. The catalog changes, and an example featured in 2024 may no longer be available or compatible with your current game version.

How do you find and install mods on PS5 or Xbox?

Console players browse, install and manage supported mods in Baldur’s Gate 3’s official in-game mod interface. Larian’s supported pipeline uses mod.io and includes platform checks and additional curation for console releases. Larian’s mod FAQ describes the official pipeline as aiming for “improved compatibility, tools, and documentation.”

  1. Launch the game and open its in-game Mod Manager or mod browser.
  2. Browse or search the available catalog for a mod. Check its description, requirements, version information and any listed dependencies.
  3. Select the mod and follow the in-game prompts to download and enable it.
  4. Review your enabled mods before starting or loading a campaign, especially after a game update.

Names and availability can change, so the in-game browser is the best place to confirm what your platform currently supports.

Can console players use PC mods or make their own?

Not all PC mods are available on console. A mod must pass the supported pipeline and console curation; PC availability alone does not mean it will appear on PS5 or Xbox. Larian specifically says mods that introduce new playable races cannot be curated for console, so the console catalog should not be treated as a complete mirror of PC’s.

The official Modding Toolkit is for PC, not console. Its Patch 8 update allows partial editing of existing levels, including certain templates and interactive objects, but it cannot add dialogue or alter static world elements such as buildings, scenery or terrain. Toolkit updates also support selected UI-related functions, including action resources, race passives and scrolling in character-creation selections. These creator tools do not mean console players can build or edit mods in-game.

What limits and compatibility rules matter?

  • 100-mod limit: Larian states that console sessions have a limit of 100 mods.
  • No third-party mods on console: Larian says, “Third-party mods cannot be used on consoles.” Use the official in-game route for supported console mods.
  • Matching multiplayer loadouts: Everyone joining a modded multiplayer session needs the same mods at the same versions. Larian’s Mod Verification window can prompt players to enable, update, downgrade or install missing mods.
  • Updates can disrupt compatibility: Larian warns that a game update may leave some mods incompatible until their authors update them. Its Patch 8 announcement notes, “Some things might not work immediately after a new update and it might take a little while before a mod can be updated.”

Before loading an important save after a patch, check mod status and dependencies in the in-game browser. Do not assume a mod will remain compatible across game versions or every save.

Which console mods should you choose?

Start with the change you want, then check platform availability and multiplayer needs. A role-play or visual mod may leave core progression alone, while a larger party limit or extended level progression can reshape difficulty and campaign balance. For a multiplayer run, settle on the mod list and versions with the group before beginning; the verification window helps resolve mismatches, but it does not make different mod configurations equivalent.

  • Want new class flavor? Check for a console-curated subclass mod; remember that Patch 8’s official subclasses are already part of the game.
  • Want role-play or cosmetic changes? Look for mods that adjust dialogue options, character presentation or dice visuals.
  • Want convenience or extended progression? Read descriptions closely, since party-size and level-cap changes can affect the game well beyond a small quality-of-life tweak.
  • Playing with others? Confirm everyone can access the same mods at the same versions before settling on the campaign setup.
