For the weapon, try Command: Drop early and pick up the blade if Zhalk drops it. For the kill, boost your attack chances, use the short window before reinforcements arrive, and keep the escape console as your fallback.
Is Commander Zhalk required to beat the Nautiloid?
No. Zhalk is an optional cambion in the Nautiloid Prologue, fighting a mind flayer at the helm. You can bypass him and reach the console to escape. Killing him earns experience and loot, but it is a separate, harder objective; do not let the fight prevent your escape. BG3 Wiki’s encounter guide reports a 15-turn limit and incoming cambion reinforcements.
How to get the Everburn Blade without killing Zhalk
- Prepare Command: Drop before entering the helm. Shadowheart or another eligible cleric or Fiend Warlock can use it if the spell is available to that character.
- Cast it on Zhalk early. If he fails his saving throw, he drops the Everburn Blade. The tactic is chance-based: Zhalk may save, and the spell is not guaranteed to work. The item guide notes his high chance of resisting it.
- Have a party member pick up the blade. The encounter guide says Zhalk does not retrieve it after dropping it.
- Choose whether to continue. Once you have the weapon, you can still head for the console rather than risk a kill attempt.
The encounter guide recommends trying the spell early because it may also slow the damage Zhalk deals to the mind flayer. That is a tactical opportunity, not a guaranteed outcome.
How to kill Commander Zhalk
A kill attempt is tougher than securing the weapon: Zhalk has high hit points, high Armor Class, and resistances, and the encounter is time-limited. The guide recommends improving attack odds with Bless or, if available, Faerie Fire, which can give attackers advantage against an affected target. Use the party’s available damage and control, and reassess as the escape deadline approaches rather than assuming the fight will end within a fixed number of rounds.

Use the Everburn Blade against cambions
If you obtained it, the Everburn Blade’s magical physical damage can bypass the nonmagical slashing resistance relevant to cambions. It is useful against Zhalk and the arriving cambions, though it is not necessarily the best weapon for every character or build. The item page describes the weapon’s properties.
Expect reinforcements; do not rely on a barricade
The Prologue guide says two cambion soldiers arrive through the east approach after several rounds. You can stack three cartilaginous chests in the corridor to delay their route, but the cambions may fly around the obstruction. Treat this as a possible delay, not a dependable way to keep them out.

Choose your objective before spending turns
