You need four Umbral Gems to progress through the Gauntlet of Shar: one from each of the Soft-Step, Self-Same, and Faith-Leap trials, plus one from Yurgir’s lair. Put one gem in the central altar to activate the platform; after crossing the chasm, put the other three in the altar beyond it to open the way onward.
Where to find all four Umbral Gems
Soft-Step Trial: sneak through the maze
Reach the altar at the end of the stealth maze without being detected to collect its Umbral Gem. Invisibility or turn-based movement can help you manage patrols. You can also open the final gate or use movement options to reach the gem, as described in the Steam guide.
Self-Same Trial: check where the last enemy fell
Defeat the shadow copies of your party. The Umbral Gem drops where the final copy you defeat falls, so inspect that spot and pick up the gem before leaving the arena. It may not be beside the return point. See the Gamer Guides walkthrough.
Faith-Leap Trial: follow the route across the chasm
Before crossing, inspect the map near the start of the trial. Use it to guide you along the dark path to the Umbral Gem on the far side. The Gamer Guides walkthrough covers this route.

Yurgir’s lair: collect the gem in the lair
The fourth gem is in Yurgir’s lair on the east side of the Gauntlet. The encounter can be resolved through combat or contract-related choices; neither approach is required by the gem sequence. Confirm you have collected the gem from the lair before moving on. The BG3 Wiki entry describes the gem’s location.
How to use the four gems
- At the central altar, insert one Umbral Gem to activate the floating platform.
- Cross the chasm on the platform.
- At the altar beyond the chasm, insert the remaining three gems to open the onward door.

Two nearby puzzles that do not count toward the four gems
- Entrance statue: This is a separate puzzle that opens access to the Gauntlet. Darken the room to reveal gaps in the forcefield and navigate through them.
- Silent Library: Its Spear of Night puzzle is a separate objective, not one of the Umbral Gem trials.
