There is one subclass for each of the game’s twelve classes. Patch 8 is already live, so this is a guide to what each option adds—not an upcoming-release announcement.
When did the 12 BG3 subclasses release?
Patch 8 launched on April 15, 2025. Larian first announced the update on November 27, 2024, saying it would arrive the following year; the April release post confirmed the date. Larian’s original announcement and its Patch 8 release post establish that timeline.
The update was broader than subclasses: Larian also highlighted Photo Mode and cross-play, while its release highlights noted split-screen on Xbox Series S. Xbox Wire’s April 15 overview said Patch 8 was rolling out to Xbox Series X|S that day. Xbox Wire’s Patch 8 overview describes the full roster.
What are the 12 new subclasses?
Each of BG3’s twelve classes gained one option. The features below are the defining hooks highlighted by Larian, not a ranking of power or a complete ability list.

| Rogue | Swashbuckler | A pirate-inspired style includes tricks such as blinding foes with sand or disarming them. |
| Sorcerer | Shadow Magic | Features highlighted include Shadow Walk, Superior Darkvision, the Hound of Ill Omen, and Strength of the Grave. |
| Warlock | Hexblade | A Shadowfell-linked weapon pact combines curses with Accursed Spectres. |
| Wizard | Bladesinging | Combines spellcasting and swordplay through Bladesong. Larian’s release highlights use “Bladesinging”; Xbox Wire calls it “Bladesinger.” |

Which subclass fits your play style?
Choose by the role or combat texture you want rather than treating the roster as a best-to-worst list. These groupings are practical ways to read the described mechanics, not official rankings.

- Distinctive damage or weapon play: Path of the Giants emphasizes throwing, Death Domain offers necrotic and necromancy options, and Bladesinging mixes sword combat with spells.
- Summons and mobility: Swarmkeeper uses creature swarms and can teleport; Shadow Magic features the Hound of Ill Omen; Hexblade brings Accursed Spectres.
- Role-play flavor: Way of the Drunken Master leans into drinking, Swashbuckler into pirate tricks, and Oath of the Crown into law and duty.
Does “final patch” mean BG3 will receive no more updates?
No. Larian described Patch 8 as the last game patch to introduce new content, with an explicit allowance for minor bug fixing afterward. The studio’s wording was: “Outside of minor bug fixing, Patch 8 will be the last game patch to introduce new content.” Its May 20, 2025 Community Update #34 and Hotfix #32 post reported game version 4.1.1.6848561 and discussed further fixes, illustrating the distinction between a final major content update and the end of maintenance. The phrase does not promise that every future fix or technical update is impossible.
Larian’s February 2025 stress-test update documented adjustments and fixes during pre-release testing. Those were testing notes; they should not be read as a list of known problems in the released subclasses.
